I am so glad that Ryu got his own story. When he first appeared in Off the Ice I was intrigued by him. And now he has his partner in Emmitt! They are perfect opposites! And the journey they take each other on to find their balance was amazing!
Goalie Interference is the second book in the Hat Trick series by Avon Gale and Piper Vaughn. This is a contemporary m/m romance with an enemies to lovers theme. Sexy guys that bring the steam, competition that brings the spicy drama, and mix in some hockey scenes and you have an interesting and entertaining story with fun characters that you will want to know.I received an advanced reader’s copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.
I was so happy to hear Gale and Vaughn were teaming up again for the second book in this series! Goalie Interference is pure enemy to lovers with goalies Ryu and Emmitt crackling with animosity from the moment they meet. And why wouldn’t they? Ryu thought he’d be named the starter but instead the coach informs them they’ll be taking turns. The competition was on!Not only were they legit rivals, there are big personality differences. But of course, it was only a matter of time before they acknowledged the thin line between lust and hate and decide they might as well work out some of the tension. Only they both catch feelings and right as they’re realizing they really do like one another, the Venom go into the playoffs and there will be only one starting goalie. My heart went out to both of them because at the end of the day, they both want to be the starter and they don’t know how to reconcile the competition with their relationship. So much angst!Unfortunately, the ending felt very rushed. Ryu and Emmitt don’t really address their issues before getting back together. What’s to stop them from breaking up the next time the coach is going to choose between them? Yes, they now admit they love one another but I wanted to know how they would work through their competitiveness on the ice and what they can do to communicate their concerns. While the epilogue gives us a nice glimpse of their relationship, it was not far enough into the future to give me the reassurance that they’ll wo.
I liked this book. I enjoy reading about pro athletes falling in love. This one did not disappoint.
One of my favorite trope is enemies to lovers. So I am all over a story about rival goalies. So the rival between Ryu and Emmitt as they compete for starting goalie for the season was definitely something I find entertaining. The tension in this story is definitely not just sexual. Avon Gale and Piper Vaughn has done a great job in making a story that I couldn’t put down.
I’m in love with this series and the characters! The characters are extremely well written and funny, the plot is great sans the hockey is spot on! I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
Goalie Interference was a solid read and while it had it’s high points for me there were also low points that have made rating this one hard. I’ll start with the good: I loved both Ryu and Emmitt and together they were on fire. Creating likable and enjoyable characters is obviously a strong suit for Avon Gale and Piper Vaughn. I strongly related to Ryu’s introverted and reserved nature and his intense focus. In contrast, Emmitt is cocky, flashy, and extroverted and I loved every second of it! Together they’re complete opposites but they help to balance each other out and their competitive battle works to make them better hockey players. I also loved seeing more of Tristan and Seb because I adored their book, Off the Ice, and as a complete surprise, I fell hard for Morley. He’s loud, obnoxious, and goofy and all of those are compliments; I really hope his book is next! What made this book hard to rate for me is the excessive telling. The majority of Goalie Interference felt like I was getting a summary of everything that was happening instead of actually experiencing it live. It made for a lot of internal monologues, info dumps, and quickly breezed by events. It made it much harder to connect with the story and if not for the strongly written characters I would have rated this lower. I waffled a lot on what to rate this and ultimately decided on 4 stars because I still really enjoyed the story overall.**I received an ARC from the publisher through NetGalley. I did not receive a.
3.5-4 starsThis is the second in the series, but read fine as a standalone. I haven’t read the first book, and didn’t feel like anything was missing.Enemies to lovers, competition, athletes, diversity, and many more of my favorite things. This pushed a lot of my buttons, and over all I loved it. The tension was delicious, the characters compelling, and the story fun. There was a really amazing story here, it just missed in the execution though. I felt like a lot of the emotional component was told to us, instead of being able to see and feel it.I wasn’t one hundred percent sold on the ending either. It felt…incomplete, or maybe just not satisfying enough for me. Not that the boys needed to come out, but more that there were a lot of questions about the future were left unanswered for me.I loved the book as a whole, and Ryu might be one of my favorite characters of any I’ve read this year.I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy.
Oh, it’s been too long since I’ve read an Avon Gale–Piper Vaughn book. They’re the gold standard of m/m hockey romance for me, and Goalie Interference didn’t disappoint. I loved the enemies-to-lovers (while still remaining rivals) progression, and the secondary characters (with bonus updates on past protagonists) sparkled. My only complaint is that after a delicious buildup, the last… 20%? felt rushed to me. I’d have been delighted with another several chapters with a lot more hockey and a lot more relationship-building. That said, what *was* on the page was excellent, and I’m looking forward to finding time to go back and reread what came before. My thanks to A Novel Take PR for an advance copy of this book.
