Sega has innovated in a genre that I thought couldn’t be innovated any further. They’ve blended traditional turn based strategy (think FF Tactics) and 3rd person shooting (think Gears of War) into one seamless package. It works surprisingly well and adds a much needed shot in the arm to an otherwise aging and increasingly stale genre. I’ve been looking for a quality “new feeling” experience for a long time and this one fits the bill perfectly. Sega gets super high marks in my book across the board – Story, Graphics, Sound, Replay Value, all of it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to fans of the strategy rpg genre. It’s a CRIME against humanity that this game isn’t selling better. Hopefully word of mouth will give it a much deserved long tail.
Honestly, once the price of the PS3 dropped with the release of the PS3 slim, I said to myself, “The time has come.” I was finally able to afford to play this game and boy was it worth it! I think one of the reasons I played this game was because it was made by Sega and some of the crew who produced the Sakura Taisen Series. It shows, as the systems have similarities.I can’t say enough about this game and I’m sure that if you’re reading my review, you’ve read other reviews on the specific details of the games systems, graphics, story, etc. If anything, I want my review to give you the extra push to buy it. You know what this game has to offer, don’t hesitate and buy it! If I never buy another game for my PS3, that’d be fine, because Valkyria was worth it!
I’ve had a PS3 since launch date, and yes, I was one of those idiots who waited outside for hours to get one. Having played a ton of what the PS3 had to offer, I can say without a doubt that Valykyria Chronicles is a game you must own and play. Definitely one of my favorite games on the system by far.The story has you traversing through an alternate 1930s as Edelweiss Tank Commander Welkin Gunther and his rag tag militia team known as “Squad 7” as they defend their home country of Gallia from invasion by the Imperial army. The story is told through a book interface, and while it got a little cheesy at times, and while WWI-WWII era is overplayed, the story focuses on the effect that war has on characters, rather than the gore and violence of it. It was interesting enough to want me to not only finish it but the characters are actually fleshed out really well, especially enough for me to want to care about them. The protagonists are likeable, the antagonists are well, antagonist, but with human motives that make them more so realistic than just pure evil. The graphics are beautiful, and take shape in what I would describe as a painting in motion. The art style is anime, with some cut scenes taking place between boxes of talking heads while others being completely animated in canvass like cinematic. Honestly, I thought it was cool, and while the anime art direction would turn some people off, I can say the pros outweigh the cons. The game play itself is a combination of turn based.
Not more much to add about this game from the other reviews. Bought it for the $19.99 price tag and enjoyed it. The game reminds me a Speed Racer cartoon. I replayed this game one time, that’s about it.It is really unlike any RPG out there. This would be a good intro RPG for pre-teens. This game should be rated E for everyone. It has a side quest that teaches kids about how good veggies are and how you should eat them–all the while you have to clear the path of enemies so that secure a veggie supply line. Has a good message for racial tolerance. One of the few games out there with a hidden moral story line–all this while you get to blast wannabe Nazi’s.
This game, despite appearing like a typical RPG, is not an RPG but a unique strategy game. I didn’t hear of this game until I was bored and checked a list of the top PS3 games. I promptly ordered it, and after playing through the entire game and the dlc I rank this game as one of the few games today worth paying full price. Enough missions exist to keep you busy your first play through. After playing through all the side missions included on the game disk you’ll have forgotten the exact strategy needed for earlier missions. And if you’re still hungry for more the dlc is well worth the cost, unlike most dlc released for games. The game play requires strategy and quick thinking. This isn’t an old rpg where you can ponder what to do for half an hour. This is due to the game’s battle system, which has you individually control a character when you select them. You move about in real time until the turn is over. The differences in your squad result in a plethora of strategic decisions. Most missions can be beat several different ways (as evident by the number of youtube videos available). The story is decent, and keeps you engaged. The main characters become more than your typical characters that you identify by their appearance (the big guy, the dude with the scar). Even my girlfriend knows the name of most of the characters despite despising me playing video games. The replay value, as alluded to above is rather high. You have the main missions and plenty of side mission.
Unique game play that is basically a turn based strategy game, but greatly improves upon it by blending in real time movements. Each unit has X amount of movement allowed. As you move everything is in real time. When you stop, time stops. The view during movement is 3rd person. Basically you get the action and excitement of real time and the strategy and depth of turn based strategy. The story is based off of and follows closely to the anime with the same title. The story is great, but is more for people who like anime and same with the cut scenes. Google with anime if you want more story details. It is a high rated anime.Anything else about the game, I think the other commentors covered. I just wish they made another one for the PS3. The PSP version was "ok", but good for a PSP game.
i am an rpg rts turn based game nut and this is the best game i’ve played in years. i only started playing in 2012 years after its release but i love it. it is more of a historical fiction based game rather than fantasy but the strategy is so evocative i can’t stop thinking of this game. if you are into thinking games ie… xcom, final fantasy, age of empires etc… you will love this game. i just wish more people were into strategy so games like this were produced more.
Though it has a japanese appeal and great music it is a more of a strategy turn based game with some rpg elements. with that in mind it plays like full spectrum warrior/ten hammers but has more customization and is less darker and more hopeful in tone. If you are buying this for the anime and turn based appeal be warned, you need to use a little gray matter to enjoy it.
At 1st I was not too impressed with how the game played, but it grew on me and as the game progressed it grew challenging enough to keep my interest without losing me with complexity. a good balanced game but not an EPIC game or must have game. The storyline is pretty good, and the play time is faily low compared to how much cinematics you have to go thru until you can play. If you like games that have ALOT of story time, then this is the game for you.
I don’t think I need to write a long review to confirm what other reviewers had written. This game is great from every aspects, visual, audio, and gameplay. I haven’t found any J-strategy RPG this great since Final Fantasy Tactics. (Sorry, Disgaea fans. Disgaeas are good, but this one is better.)The only thing I regret about this buy is that retrolio sold it for $49.99 for a while and I didn’t get it :P But for $56.99, its quality worths every penny. I’m a die-hard JRPG fan and this game keeps me from strangling myself for not buying X360.Keep it up Sega :)
