I watched Empire of the Sun some thirty years ago and remember being amazed by an epic narrative set against a panorama of WWII era China. I remembered the story arc and a few scenes but not much else so I thought it could be fun to watch it as an adult. What I learned is that Empire of the Sun is mostly a young personĆ¢ā¬ā¢s movie. The ironies, foreshadowing and symbolism are so noticeable as to be almost drilled into oneĆ¢ā¬ā¢s head. The cultural stereotyping is a reminder that it was made in the 1980s. However, the acting, particularly that of Christian Bale, is superb and carries what could have been a B-movie into a genuine classic. It is essentially a tale of growing-up; albeit under the dramatic circumstances of an internment camp. That, along with the previously mentioned blunt use of literary techniques, make it more for young teens than adults. But the movie can be enjoyed by all. The story of the Japanese occupation of Asia is already being forgotten; itĆ¢ā¬ā¢s fortunate that Spielberg forever captured it in this film.Watch it with your tweens or young teens. They should love it.
Most WWII movies are based on military action, and to a lessor extent, high level decisions. This looks at Japanese treatment of civilian prisoners. It is well acted, and the sets believable. This is not a pleasant movie to watch if you are a sensitive soul.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Watch it again about every two or three years. It is a great example of WW2 including the Japanese invasion of China and the impact on the British residents. The cast is excellent and Christian Bale is phenomenal as the young boy..
Magnificent movie of a true historical event. Strongly recommend it for over 16 yr olds.
The only way I crossed paths with this movie was when it showed up after I searched on google for “Best free retrolio movies.” I decided to watch it and I am now writing this review in tears. This story was so beautiful. It is so captivating and just pulls you in. Seeing Jim’s character change from posh and snooty to independent and empathetic brought the story so much worth. You get to experience a character’s growth in the setting of WWII.The movie also shows what it’s like to grow up in a Japanese war camp specifically from Jamie’s point of view.If you are on the fence about watching it, do not hesitate to press “play.”
This is a beautifully made and acted film. For some reason it never attained the popularity of other Spielberg films, which I can’t understand at all. It is somewhat dependent on the touching performance of a young, inexperienced Christian Bale, but many movies center on one character, and the supporting actors are great also. I’ve read that some people complain that the passage of time in the movie is not realistically depicted, but for me that’s merely poetic license and doesn’t diminish the impact of the film. The musical score by John Williams stands out as exceptional. It is the only original music I remember from a movie which is not a musical The cinematography is stunning. Like all the best Spielberg, Empire of the Sun directly touches the heart while almost incidentally conveying powerful insights about war, survival and the human spirit. Absolutely no preaching!! If you haven’t seen this film yet – I highly recommend it. It is an underestimated gem!
It’s astounding that such a touching and moving film was practically buried alive by the awards "aristocracy" thus turning people away from a "must see’ film. Must see, because of it’s historic basis ( the book it’s based on by J.G. Ballard) and all of the superb performances put in by a cast of actors who were household names or one did would become so. Especially the star of that film, at a very young age, Christian Bale, who showed his tremendous abilities. If you haven’t seen it, do so. You won’t regret one moment.
Wonderful movie about a little taught part of world war 2 history, Shanghai. The history becomes a bit shaky in parts… Jim, the main character in the movie, shouldn’t have been able to see the bomb because it was too far away, things like that, but it was, overall, well done. Steven Spielberg confuses by selecting a fabulous lullaby, sung in Welsch, for the Edwardian styled Church of England boy choir to sing. Jim sings it again during one of the high points of the movie, near the end. The English country club is used as the prisoner of war camp to house the Western (Enlish and American) prisoners, and it’s grounds and buildings become almost another character in the movie. Ben Stiller, John Malkovich, The Future Batman… All star, for sure…
One of Spielberg’s least-known movies is arguably his masterpiece, the most visually poetic film since Lawrence of Arabia, and possibly ever. It contains literally stunning images and sequences, not for their scenic beauty but for their emotional impact and Spielberg’s genius at composition and at telling stories with pictures. Based on the autobiographical novel by J.G. Ballard, it is about the son of a British family living in Shanghai before the outbreak of World War II. Spielberg at the peak of his talent devises images and sequences unlike anything else in the movies. Of these there are many, but four stand out as most memorable: One is a caravan of limousines carrying British families across the poverty-stricken city on the way to a costume party. Another, which follows shortly thereafter, involves the son, Jim (future Oscar-winner Christian Bale, in a terrific debut role – he’s onscreen nearly the entire time), flying a glider across a field. In yet another, Jim, who is fascinated with aircraft, spots a Japanese Zero on the ground and approaches it. A mechanic is welding part of the fighter and the sparks create the effect of a shower of stars. As Jim reaches the Zero and touches it almost lovingly, in the background two Japanese pilots stand silhouetted against the rising sun. And in the fourth – and most riveting – scene, American fighters attack the Japanese air base where Jim and many other British nationals are being held for the duration of the war. Done with rea.
Christian Bale was 13 when he was cast in the staring roll of this exceptional Stephen Spielberg Film. It’s a big film. An important film. This is a must DVD for your home collection. It rates very high on my list of "Greatest Films of all Time"
