Plays almost all 2600 compatible carts and is compatible with legacy paddles and joysticks. The joysticks are very good and are superior to legacy sticks. It does NOT work with Genesis controllers or paddles (easily). But these are just what it does out of the box….with just a little effort and research you can hack this thing and use it as an atari emulator! That’s when it really shines!Has the ability to load unlimited ROMs (based on SD card space), this was updated with new firmware so old reviews mentioning limited ROM storage numbers are no longer accurate.It’s a little touchy (about 20% of my physical carts would not load) and could use a few more bells and whistles (like remote game reset) but overall I love it and would recommend to any Atari enthusiast!
…man die Custom-Firmware aus dem AtariAge-Forum installiert (und zwar die mit Stella 6!).War das Flashback 9 (Boom-Edition) schon ein ziemlicher Hit, legt das Retron77 die Meßlatte noch einmal etwas höher:Die Verarbeitung des Geräts ist hochwertiger als die des guten AtGames-Produktes (vor allem die Sticks liegen schwerer in der Hand und einen etwas härteren Druckpunkt, dafür fehlen Zustaztasten an den Sticks für Select, Reset etc, was aber leicht zu verschmerzen ist). Ebenso scheint der Prozessor des Geräts um einiges leistungsfähiger zu sein, denn er kommt zusammen mit der Stella -Firmware selbst bei neuen Spielen wie Draconian nicht ins Schwitzen und alles läuft butterweich.Bild und Ton sind klasse!Leider bekommt man mit der neuen Firmware das klassische, und aus meiner Sicht etwas langweilige, Stella-Menü auf den Schirm, dafür kann man aber eigene Screenshots einbinden. Ebenso sind Einstellungen für z.B. emulierte TV-Effekte möglich, die über die reinen Scanlines des Flashbacks hinausgehen; wer es ganz retro will kann z.B. die Bildqualität eines schlecht justierten Röhrenfernsehers nachstellen, falls das der eigenen Erinnerung am nächsten kommt. Das komplette Weglassen dieser Effekte ist aber auch möglich!Das Retron77 kann mit der neuen Firmware alle Spiele – egal ob neue Entwicklungen oder alte Klassiker – problemlos laufen lassen – das war mit der Flashback 9 leider nicht möglich, obwohl deren Einschränkungen aber immerhin 99% aller Spiele ermöglichten. Saw this at Fry’s and decided to try it. Your 2600 cartridges will look better than ever. Sharp lines and no fuzziness. The joystick takes getting used to and you need to convince it to move sometimes which is a little frustrating. The HDMI is great. I have an old set of paddles, but your “block” or whatever you control on the screen moves around in the middle position on the paddle. Not sure if my paddles are bad/dirty or if it is the unit – leaning towards the paddles being bad. Anyway, would not pay more than $60 for it. Definitely brought back memories and it is fun to play if you grew up with it. Not as good as the Classic NES, but as good as Atari 2600 is going to get. I would buy this again, but not for more than $60.
This little box does everything I wanted it to do. It will play most of the original Atari 2600 carts no problem. It can also play the Atari 2600 ROM files when loaded onto the internal SD card. It comes with a great 2600 style joystick that is even better than the original. Most of the “home brew” Atari 2600 games will play on it as well. All the games are upgraded to 720p and connection to modern TVs is a breeze via HDMI cable. Some hardcore retro gamers complain that it won’t play everything under the sun but for me, and what I want, it is the perfect retro gaming console with modern convenience added in. I love it!

This is a review by a casual gamer. I dont go too in depth. It’s a fun little system to pop my old Atari cartridges in, and play away. I do appreciate the hdmi hookup as well. The controller that came with it is great due to a small ergonomic update and is lefty or righty friendly. Love the design of the console as well. It has a nice little slot for a micro sd card for the homebrew folks out there. I’d say the price is fair for an updated console. Still puts a smile on my face playing a little bit of river raid.
The retron77 works well. Not all games play but most do. The picture is great for Atari. My only issue was the packing. Mine was not packed well at all. The retail box was simply shoved in an envelope.
