A good game for fans of the series or dungeon crawler fans, but fairly dated for anyone new to the series or genre.
Arrived before expected time. Product as described.
This is Soul Hackers US debut, a remastered 3DS version of a classic from 1997. It’s a wonderful spinoff/streamline from the early SMT titles and has a lot of great character, vibe and good design. While it’s true that it is a bit dated in certain areas, it’s almost in a charming way. Your hand isn’t being held, you’re not being bogged down with nonsense and it’s very smart and with a lot of dials to turn, so to speak. There are little bits of cludge, but they don’t really detract and to be honest the 1997-era FMV is almost…cute. The narrative itself is very peppy, fun to follow and the characters are great. It’s also wonderful to go back to this era of art, without all of the cherub faces and shiny skin and over focus of cute-ness or little girls we have today. Designs are very creative and full of character. Lots of grit and inspiration but while still being colorful and not pandering. It’s hard to explain, but it’s a nice trip back to a time where everything wasn’t just a trope.Sound work is solid overall, not standout, music is largely filler-esque in most areas and a bit of a weak point for the series. Voice work is competent and easy on the ears but no one ever really goes above and beyond in any performances.Dungeons are great. Big, twisty mazes, lots of supplements to make them a great crawl for anyone, with new adjustable difficulties and automapping features. Combat is standard SMT (ie; more in-depth Pokemon, although let me clarify that Pokemon spawned from SMT, no.
Love this game! Good buy for the price!
This is a fun and challenging dungeon crawler that every Shin Megami Tensei fan should play. Its a little dated, but its an updated Sega Saturn game, so it has an excuse.
SWEET
Atlus rarely disappoints their fans. Whether with the "hardcore" MegTen/SMT gams or the supposed "only slightly less hardcore" Persona series, Atlus knows how to craft relatable characters, intriguing settings, and interesting plots rolled into amazing, and very addicting, RPGs.Over the years of course things have "streamlined" and while arguably maybe not so much as Bethesda, or just like Bethesda depending on where you stand, you can see the differences that began to change with SMT 3: Nocturne and the other ps2 SMT games(and while technically the off shoot Persona games may not be part of the SMT "line" of games, there are obvious connections that have that series branch off from SMT, much like the not-so-distant relative to the MegTen franchise that started in the 80s before SMT was even in the picture).Soul hackers is a great middle ground for those who wish to see that progression without having to be brutally destroyed by trying earlier S/MT…which I highly recommend at least trying after getting through Soul Hackers. The difficulty of DS:SH can be "hacked" in either direction( high difficulty, low difficulty, or "off" for a normal setting) which is mighty helpful for everyone without punishing anyone. As far as gameplay goes it is as engrossing as any SMT game. You follow along a cyberpunk, technologically advanced society with connections to the occult…demons. There have been many comparisons to Pokemon, but the simila.
It is a mega ten game. If you know what that means you will enjoy it, otherwise you might want to skip it.
Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers was a Sega Saturn RPG that never saw a release in the West, even though it saw ports to subsequent consoles in Japan, such as Sony’s PSX. It’s a loosely related sequel to another Sega Saturn video game that also never saw release in the West. Finally, however, Atlus was able to bring Soul Hackers to the West to join other titles in the Nintendo 3DS’ increasingly incredible library of games. This game is awesome in a number of ways. The mix of occult elements with noirish cyberpunk futurism makes for a very unique backdrop for the interesting story, which involves a group of young hackers unwittingly getting involved in a vast, demonic conspiracy. The gameplay is very old-school, with first-person navigation in dungeons, turn-based battles, and of course the things that make a SMT games unique: demon negotiation, summoning, and fusion. It is entertaining to engage in the frequently oddball conversations with different types of demons, who sport a variety of personality types. Props to Atlus U.S.A. for their awesome English translation of the script.Graphically, the game is dated (this IS a port of a Sega Saturn game released in 1997), but enough fresh paint has been applied to this title to make it look decent enough. The audio is a real treat, with some stunning music and quite impressive English voice-acting for most of the game’s dialogue. I would recommend wearing earbuds or headphones while playing this, though, especially if you’re playing thi.
This was one of the items on a Christmas "wish list" so bought it as a gift and was greatly appreciated by my gamer.
