This book and this story are not for someone who prefers pure reality, and specifics, or even great excitement. It is for someone who wants to either at moments feel deeply as if he is living at some time in the past and suffering a war experience,, not as a soldier, but as an innocent civilian, or even a person who is presently an immigrant, who cannot remain in a place which has become unbearable, And even though it means leaving your most precious family, you almost have no choice. If there is a way out, you might take it,, not knowing where it will lead.
Mohsin Hamid is one of the best contemporary writers I have read. The plots are fast paced, characters strong, and his style evokes emotions that make the story linger in your head well after you’ve finished reading. Highly recommended!
This was a book at once poetic yet simultaneously stark and exhibiting an existentially painful beauty. Reading it felt like looking into a clear lake watching the endless replay of a splash after the stone is thrown in. It is a dreamlike exploration into survival, migrations as they have occurred for hundreds of years and humanitiesĆ¢ā¬ā¢ relationships to the timelessness of of being
A book initially slow but then turned magical, gives a viewpoint on migrant issues from a first person generalized account, while being less than real to make it less uncomfortable. The ending is slightly anticlimactic but generates thought. Enjoyed!
Good start, slow middle, weird end. It’s a great way to understand that what we think we know and see about countries like Syria or Afghanistan or Lebanon is not always true. Humans and people are the same, whatever their religion and wherever they are from. The same desires, the same basic needs. When people flee it is because they usually have no choice left.
Reading this book is like taking long sips of cool water after being thirsty for a long time. The book details many hard things, many kinds of deaths, but always calmly. The prose is so beautiful, like a constant unfurling as we see the lives of the protagonists and those more transient unfurl in the plot. The book is so humane, every life being touched on precious, and so the loss of it and the loss of potential tragic, but beautiful too. It is an important story for always, but especially for now. It blends the mystic and harrowing real seamlessly.
With a slight sci-fi twist, this book follows two young people who are thrown together due to their circumstances and struggle to maintain their relationship and individuality through their harrowing journey. By posing a "what if" question, Hamid is able to examine the injustices of immigration from this personal perspective.
In carefully measured and rhythmic prose, Mohsin Hamid takes readers through a turbulent uprising within an unnamed city as experienced by Saeed and Nadia, two lovers who meet in a university course. The story is all the more emboldened by Hamid’s objective, matter-of-fact narrative style; he documents the events in an almost clinical fashion, allowing the rhythm of the prose itself to create the emotion. Hamid is no stranger to narrative experimentation, having written the brilliant HOW TO GET FILTHY RICH IN RISING ASIA in the second person (!) and still managing to sustain the narrative tension effectively throughout. Similarly, EXIT WEST reflects the author’s storytelling prowess largely through his stylistic manner of constructing sentences in measured, calculated clauses that build into powerful crescendos that relate the story events instead of his use of more conventional techniques of character development, setting, and the like. Not to be missed.
The rhythm of the writing moves the story along at a perfect pace and supports the hint of a fairytale, while keeping the main characters very real. The use of repetition to convey the thoughts and experiences of two people was most effective and and made the story both enjoyable and and easy to digest. The content is very timely and powerfully conveys the impact of displacement on refugees and the difficulties they face in starting a new life in a new place.
Good stuff, finally. I have read several books lately that were just okay, good but not great, so how happy I was to read this book, Exit West, which held my attention from beginning to end. Engaging and believable main characters; honest concern with the isolationist attitude many seem to be taking; a little fantasy – or was it a giant metaphor; deep concerns about today’s seemingly endless global immigration and migration; and far from lastly, the complexity of friendships and romance. How can something be fantastical yet realistic? This is it. A thoroughly good read
