Not your average rpg. A bit of a learning curve, but well worth it! 30 hours in and barely scratched the surface! Highly recommended!
In 2004, Phantom Brave was a quirky, funny strategy RPG releasing hot on the heels of the burgeoning Disgaea series. Crafted by the same developer, Nippon Ichi Software, Phantom Brave offered a lighter tale and different mechanics compared to its more popular demonic cousin, while still retaining the similar 2-D aesthetic and all the staggering depth.Though never quite as popular as the Disgaea series, Phantom Brave garnered enough of a cult following that NIS re-released the game in 2009 on Wii with extra missions and content. This PSP edition brings over all the goodies from the Wii re-release–plus a completely new extra scenario–to create what is probably the definitive edition of this classic game. The premise puts you in the shoes of Marona, a young girl who can speak to spirits called Phantoms. These Phantoms form the core of your army, and include an eclectic mix of humans, zombies, owls, werewolves, and more. On Marona’s island home, which serves as the hub of the game, any mix of these Phantoms can be summoned for your army and customized with unique stats and quirky weapons like trees, rocks, and books. What sets Phantom Brave apart from its peers in the genre is its unique approach to battle: instead of sticking to a grid, characters are free to move anywhere within a predefined circle, which provides a nice element of strategic freedom to every fray. The only downside to this feature is that the battlefield can get fairly cluttered when characters–both friend and.
Game came quickly and is good quality. Great game! Ironically runs poorly at times on a PSP, it’s native console.
NIS America continues to bless us true gamers with amazing RPG’s on our dying PSP system. And at such a cheap price, this deal is impossible to turn down for any true fan. This is the ULTIMATE version of Phantom Brave, it features new scenarios, new allies, and a cleaner look. The music and graphics are great, and the battle system is one of a kind. There is so much to do in this game, well over 80 hours of content! Pick it up.
Playing it again for the . . . fifth time? My second favorite game of all time and it’s portable!
This game will have you investing time without even thinking much about it. (Personally, I doomed my PS2 keeping it on all night to level up, something I think “quicksave” could fix)Anyway,The cute story was not for my demographic, a turnoff for me at times. The music itself oozes so much cuteness my brother muted it without hesitation. That’s really the games only fault I can think of. And it’s not all pretty daisies and girl stuff, there’s some likable content in it. The characters were interesting enough and the game play mechanics are deep. The free movement over tile movement is a winner.Although I like both, I’d recommend this over Disgaea.
If you are a fan of the Disgaea series, then you will enjoy Phantom Brave: Heroes of the Hermuda Triangle. There are some mechanics that will take some getting used to, but overall it is quite similar to other NIS America titles, without feeling tired.
I love it
I’ve played the Disgaea series and became a huge fan of NIS from those games. I had never actually picked up Phantom brave for the PS2, but let me tell you that this game is just as much fun as Disgaea. It’s a little different and takes some getting used to with the no-grid system; but once you get the hang of it you won’t be putting the game down. The fusion system, dungeons, and finding the Divine sword are going to suck your life away. If you’re into grinding and a challenge to get your characters to 9999 then this game is definitely up your alley.
Phantom Brave: Heroes of the Hermuda Triangle is a port of the original PS2 Phantom Brave game, along with the added extras of the Wii port, Phantom Brave: We Meet Again. This edition, however, features additional extras that makes it the definitive version of this title. The game’s flow consists of an Overworld Map that leads into Story Events that then lead into battles. The actual gameplay occurs during these battles, and there is much to explain, that if you’ve played any other “isometric/grid-based” tactical or strategy-based RPGs, you will have a pretty good feeling of how this game’s battles play out. Battles take place on gridless, isometric battlefields where you can control and move your own characters to manipulate the environment and/or deal damage to opposing enemies. This is the basis of the game, so it seems simple enough, but the amount of character customization and user dependency is at an extreme here, giving you more freedom to play the game how you wish. The BGMs and overall sounds are okay; looped tracks won’t keep you annoyed and wanting to turn off the game, I assure you. The English voice acting is bearable, though you can prefer to switch to Japanese if you want the original dialogue. The visuals are retained from the PS2 title, so you will see apparent “pixel art”. It is a nice graphic style, and seeing the characters change facial and body expressions is a treat.Overall, this revision of Phantom Brave is the finest, and with many added extras, limitl.
