I have most of this series (Panzer General, Allied General, Pacific General, Panzer General II, and Peoples General). This particular one is a favorite, EXCEPT it was made for much slower PCs. While I can run DOS in XP, the scrolling is too fast. You go from one end of the scenerio map to the other so fast that you can’t stop where you want to. If you have a really old PC around, it would be better than a new one. My oldest PC (XP), unfortunately, is still too fast. Some of the naval characteristics are wrong, especially concerning submarines. There was only 1 successful attack by a WWII sub on a destroyer and that was an American sub, late in the war. Otherwise submarines avoided firing on destroyers because the track gives their firing position away. Submarines are not at all effective in shallow water. The PBY was the most successful anti-submarine killer of the war, destroying 40 submarines on the Murmask run territory alone. In the game PBY’s can’t even attack subs. How authentic is that?
fun game
Yes this will take you back to the last century bringing up memories of battles with friends of the past. No this is not as high speed as much of what you can pick up off the shelf now, but if you liked this game back then you will still enjoy it now.
Thanx for bringing this back. I’ve always loved PG.
Good old computer game for old man who wanted to play it with his son whoĆ¢ā¬ā¢s now too old for it
Any player of the old board game classics such as Squad Leader, Panzer Leader, etc.m will recognize that this game was revolutionary for it’s time, but make sure you have an obsolete computer to play it on.
Panzer General is one of the war games released by SSI in the mid 90’s based on those hex mapped games you may have seen people playing in the 80’s. I had an uncle into those earlier table top games, and I could NEVER figure out just what he was doing.Panzer General is the computerized version of that, and with its intuitive interface and easy to understand controls, this game is untold hours of fun and stratagem.I have played it over and again, from different starting points, and you never play the same game twice even if you come back and fo it all over again. This is not only fun war gaming (Think Advanced Wars without the cartoon character commanders) but it is infinitely replayable.I thought this one had been lost to the advance of OS – as in it doesnt play well in XP, or Vista, but I found a little program to create a better dosbox, and with it, this game has found new life in my house. If you want to try it out, you can get it here:I would HIGHLY suggest, if you havent tried this one out, do it. Panzer General is a MUST play game for strategy fans.
I played this game years ago and had a blast. Im not sure someone who has never tried it could get past the outdated graphics though. I played the heck out of this copy and was impressed with the way they got it to work on my computer.
I pull this out every year and play it again. It uses the correct historical cities and army logistics and has an easy playing style. I love having battles and seeing the outcome. Its a great game for geeks.
Back in the mid 1990s I bought this game in a bargain bin. Little did I know that I would be buying a game that I would enjoy so much that I would spend hundreds and hundreds of hours playing for the next 16-17 years. Like the writer above, I pull this game out one to two times a year and play an entire campaign on it. It is most fun now to dumb down the AI and roll across the planet with my panzer legions.Anyway, the game is set up much like the old Avalon Hill board games “Panzer Blitz” and “Panzer Leader” with units that move over a grided computer battlefield. By modern graphics standards it is ancient but that really is irrelevant if you are looking more for fun than 3-D realism. You win each scenario by defeating your opponent and siezing objectives before a certain set turn. If you do this then you get a major victory and many more avenues and prestige points (unit buying/upgrading dollars) become available. You get a variety of units to choose from and more become available as time moves on chronologically. It is historically appropriate. So, for example, you can’t buy Tiger tanks in 1939 and use them to invade Poland (not that it wouldn’t be fun). You can upgrade units during a scenario when you are sitting in a city hex or inbetween scenarios. You also can buy Fallschirmjager to parachute ahead of your spearheads from 1940 (Norway campaign) on. They are particularly valuable in winning France 1940.I would note though, that I have had to keep my old computer.
