This book made me think about how worship shapes and forms us. My intelligence has always been one of the characteristics that most defines me, but I have learned through experience that head knowledge is not enough to change myself. This book offered welcomed insights into how we are formed through habits (liturgies) both secular and religious. It is an enjoyable read. And while it does not promise or offer any life changing strategies, it helped me see church differently and encouraged me to value the gift of the church’s liturgy.
I did not realize until after I finished this book that the other two that I had purchased (Desiring and Imagining the Kingdom) that this one was much easier. I actually recommend reading in this way as this book really set the stage for the other two books which will take me much more time to chew through. I am confident that reading You Are What You Love is making my experience of reading Desiring and Imagining a much more comprehensive experience.
James book is a turning point to my heart towards Gods revelation throught the liturgies and traditions within the church. Also remarcable applications of his central thesis, you are what you love, specially those regarding vocation. Indeed, a provocative argument and inspirative book. Worth of reading and deep meditation.
Excellent book which starts with the principles of habit formation to show the value of church, home and community liturgies in the formation of a Christian Character.I liked the practical examples he gave throughout the book.
I loved the analysis and critique that too often we make discipleship all about knowledge and not about the desires of our hearts. As a PCA ruling elder it was a great reminder that we are driven by our loves as much as our beliefs and the church has to be as much about reorienting our loves as much as gaining more facts. Great balance between head and and heart.
I love his metaphor of the local mall as temple. This is typical of Smith’s insightful critique of our secular (and even religious) culture. His response is well-reasoned and theologically sound (if one is not stuck in Luther).
I’ve read Smith’s earlier works, some of which are recapitulated in You Are What You Love. This one is much more accessible, but equally as challenging. He gives a clear and compelling vision of what it means to be the church in the world (albeit a little too Calvinist for me) and how to re-shape Christian imagination for the kingdom.
Recommend reading for students and non-students alike. Very insightful, practical, and sobering perspective on our habits as a reflection of what we love and do, and what those habits do to us.
Jamie does a great job of drilling down to the heart of the matter–quite literally–and offers excellent perspectives on how we are shaped as human persons and how we can participate more intentionally in the process.
Really enjoying the book…Lots of "A-Ha" moments and reminders.
