While I must admit the prospect of seeing a One Piece Grand Battle Game come stateside is exciting, there are certain factors that keep it from being the release that fans really hoped for. This is mainly that it is a stateside release. The game is a watered down version of the Japanese version “Grand Battle Rush!”, the fourth entry in the Grand Battle series, which includes many more characters from further along in the series, as well as costumes found in the Davy Back Fight part of the series. However, the game is still the game however awful the voiceacting, however much Sanji’s cirarette is replaced with a lollipop, and however much a few characters were cut out so that fans of the US version aren’t left in the dark. The game plays very similar to “Powerstone” of the days of the Dreamcast, and the new element of summoning friends to help battle is a nice development.Overall, if you’re only familiar with the television series aring in the US then there’s no real disappointment, the game plays well and is really a blast no matter what. As for hardcore fans of the Japanese version of the series, you may be better off looking elsewhere for your One Piece related entertainments… like Japan.
my package came today and i played the game and it works really good, my brother has it for the PS2 and when i saw that it was for gamecube i decided to buy it for myself. the game is fun to play and i enjoyed it.
Fun graphics; when you press start during the game, the command chart or special attack keys are presented. A couple of characters to unlock and just a good fun game.
It was naĆĀÆve of me to think that maybe, just maybe, they’d include the Japanese language track and ‘not’ Americanize the characters in this video game like they did in the series. One Piece is quite simply my favorite anime of all time but the American TV version is mindless garbage with little or no plot and abysmal voice acting that has zero resemblence to the fantastic series from Japan. I will do everything in my power to play the Japanese version of this game somehow, some way…
“One Piece: Grand Battle” for the Nintendo Gamecube is a fighting game based on the anime and manga series, “One Piece”. The show was recently brought to America by the company 4Kids Entertainment. The series follows pirate Monkey D. Luffy and his crew sailing the world in search of One Piece, the legendary treasure of the King of the Pirates. What makes Luffy so unique is his stretching ability; as a child, he ate a “cursed fruit” from foreign lands that gave him the ability to stretch his body to incredible lengths, but lose his ability to swim or float. His crew includes Nami, the thief/navigator, Roronoa Zolo, the swordsman who uses a three-sword style (two in his hands, one in his mouth), Usopp, the marksman and inventor, and Sanji, the lady-chasing cook. His enemies include Captain Buggy, a clown with the cursed fruit power of separating and controlling parts of his body, Captain Kuro of the Thousand Plans, Don Krieg, with his massive arsenal, the Merman Arlong, and the Navy captain Chaser, with the power of smoke control. Each one of these characters is selectable in this game.In addition, each character gets characters related to them as “support characters”. These characters can be called in for special attacks during the course of a battle. These characters are usually subordinates to the main character (like the captains and their crewmen) or friends who just happen to be less powerful or important (such as Zolo’s bounty-hunting buddies, Yosaku and Johnny).Rather th.
One Piece is an anime about pirates, some who have special powers, others who are skilled fighters. Some are good, some are evil, blah blah blah. You didn’t come here to be preached to about the anime. So let’s waste no more time and get into One Piece Grand Battle, to see if it’s worth a spot on your shelf. The story is….well there really isn’t one. You do get the intro to the show when you boot up the game, but that’s really the only story you’re gonna get here. The pirates all want to find One Piece, the collection held by the man named Gold Roger, king of the pirates. Thus, whoever finds One Piece will become King Of the Pirates.Gameplay wise, Grand Battle is an arena fighting game, where characters from the show, both good and evil, duke it out until one of them wins. You have a variety of gameplay modes for both one and two players. Story mode is where you pick your pirate of choice, and make them beat up other characters to see a simple clip from the show. Not much reward, but this is one of those times where the Journey is the reward. Each character has banter, and different lines of banter for each pair of characters. Fully voiced, might I add. Nice touch. Some of the lines are funny, others are just plain awesome. Each character has a variety of moves they can do, fitting their abilities. Luffy can stretch like Mr. Fantastic, Sanji only fights with his legs because his hands are used for cooking, Ussop uses a variety of different doodads and turns them.
The manga is great, the show may stink, but this game is really fun! Its a fighting game that has all of your fav pirates like Luffy, Zolo, Nami, ect. Also, the game has some cool mutil-player fun and the levels are great too. Just pick you fav. character (mine is Arlong) and let the fight begin! NOTE: Bandai has also made the Zatch Bell game, so that might be good too! Look for it in October!
How much you enjoy this game will depend on your tolerance of the Americanized version of One Piece that currently airs on 4Kids TV. One Piece is a great, long-running manga series in Japan that features a group of pirates led by Monkey D. Luffy. They fight tyrants, restore hope, and even save entire kingdoms. What 4Kids did was butcher the series by cutting out plotlines, key character motivations, hiring a horrible dub cast, and more violence edits than you’d think were humanly possible. And unfortunately, Bandi’s Americanized version of the popular Grand Battle games continues this trend. There is no original Japanese voice track. Character names are still altered (Chaser instead of Smoker). There are minor graphical edits (ex: removal of Sanji’s cigarettes). And upcoming characters that have not yet been introduced on the american version have been cut (Foxy, Ao Kiji, etc.) It’s a disservice to older One Piece fans that followed the series long before 4Kids bought the rights. In a time where companies are striving to present their manga and anime as authentically as possible, 4Kids and Bandi are way behind.Gameplay-wise, this is still a decent game. If you like melee fighters like Super Smash Bros, the quirky character selection, special moves, and random power-ups do still carry over nicely. It’s just that the overall package has been ruined by 4Kids’ ignorance.Bottom line: If you can, stick to a rental. If you absolutely want a One Piece fighting game and don’t want to.
This game is not bad. The only problems I have is the awkward turning in the opposite direction then where I was supposed to hit my enemy. Yes One Piece first appeared on 4kids so the voice actors did not match them, however Funamation’s version voice actors did and did well. It is not because I am used to the FUnimation version I compared them both and 4kids voices just suck… next is the story mode not to bad but not enough… It shouldn’t even be called a story mode… More like Arcade Mode seriously such a misleading conception… thats it other then that I give this a 3/5
