Though it’s a little too early to tell, I think it’s pretty safe to say that ESPN NFL 2K5 will finally reign supreme in it’s yearly battle as "Best Football Game of ’04," from the legendary Madden Series. It’s hard to believe that it was only a mere five years ago, when the NFL 2K Series first appeared on the cutesy Sega Dreamcast. My have they grown… No longer content with second place in the football console wars, Sega pulled out all the stops and released a living, breathing, sweating, trash-talking, smash mouth football game. If there ever was an idea of the "perfect" football game, this would have to be it. In fact, so much so, that purchasing the anticipated Madden 2005 seems like a waste of money. But hey, I’m a hard-core football fanatic, and I have no qualms splurging seventy bucks on both football titles. Regardless, I can easily see myself playing this game till the Pro Bowl when I finally remember that Madden game I purchased oh so long ago, still un-opened, collecting dust on my shelf. The presentation on this game is absolutely phenomenal. Last year, I mentioned that NFL 2K4 did an outstanding job utilizing the ESPN license. This year is no exception. Sega should give seminars on taking advantage of a licensing goldmine such as ESPN…*cough*…Atari…*cough*…"Enter the Matrix"… The pre-game, in-game, half-time, and post-game presentations are flawless, albeit the virtual "Boomer" is a little bit creepy. Playing the.
OK, let me first say that I have liked Madden games for as long as I can remember, all the way back to Sega Genesis, but the 2005 version of the game I don’t think even holds a candle to ESPN’s offering. ESPN’s adventure into this year’s NFL season is a great offering. The graphics are comparable, most of the game modes are very similar, and, it’s only 40% the price of Madden’s offering this year. They have a great product and you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for it. The Crib is a great added feature to the game, along with the customizable stadium music that you can use your own songs you’ve ripped onto the hard drive. This is a great game, and if you’re goin to get one football game this season, there’s no doubt to get this over Madden. ESPN & Sega have proven that you can make an excellent video game without having the customer give up their first born (OK, so it’s a little extreme). Also, one key point, I’d rather listen to Chris Berman any day of the week over the Nostradamus of the End Zone. Granted, Boomer’s only in the intro and game summaries (half time and post game), but I still prefer that over BOOM! Tough acting Tinactin! Another thing that just came to mind is the Halftime summary. Any game can give you stats til you turn blue in the face, but this is the first game that I’ve seen that actually uses some of the plays you made yourself in the game as highlights, which is a major plus. Again, the Madden series better get on the good foot for next.
First let me say I’ve played Madden, and to be honest with all EA sport games, they are almost good…but the way EA has players run is odd, I mean look at the difference between winning soccer seven and fifa, the gameplay is much better, the running styles more real, and so onto this game I go ESPN has better graphics by far, the halftime show, the VIP room, the sound and all the other little extras give ESPN a huge lead over Madden…even at Maddens price this game is better!! When I’ve played Madden & it’s a free for all with 10 people bumping into 10 other peole with you and the ball stuck somewhere in the middle…very unrealistic. ESPN wins this year and hopefully next year too, buy this and be converted, a real football game exsists!
Sure, the graphics may not have that "next gen" eye appeal, but the content of the game really makes it worthwhile. The menus are really intimidating at first but then they become second nature. I would recommend this game to anyone who wants to play some REAL football.
This game is still better than Madden 11 which is pretty sad. I can’t wait until 2k makes another football game and makes football games fun again. The game play takes skill and the movements are actually realistic versus madden.Madden you are paying for a roster update every year, because they have a monopoly on the football game industry.
Like so many others that have posted, I have been playing console football games since the days of Tecmo Bowl. Heck, I’ve been playing longer than that because I remeber playing football on my Intelivision (for those that don’t remember, look it up). At any rate, I was, like many of you, hesitant to pick up ESPN 2K5 because I wanted to wait for Madden 2005, but when I heard about the price, I said what the heck and picked it up.First of all, I can’t say enough about how the graphics are leaps and bounds over any EA sports title to date. The movements are more fluid and life like. And although some may dislike the extra bonus interviews and half time show, it give the game a more realistic prensentation, plus if you don’t want to watch it, you can always skip over them. I also have NCAA Football 2005 and it just doesn’t compare. It’s like watching TV on an old 1985 TV opposed to a current year HD CRT.There are a vast majority of features, including a first person mode. While this mode may still need a little tweaking, it’s a definite challenge for the serious football gamer fan.Basically, ESPN and Sega got it right and improved on an already great game. If Madden 2005 is anything like NCAA Football 2005, it won’t stand a chance. I’ll be back in a few weeks after I trade in my NCAA to for Madden and test th waters.
I have been a madden fan for ever. I would never have played anything else besides madden football, except my buddy brought NFL 2K5 over. Call me a traitor, I aint ever going back to Madden again! Here is why I switched:Pros:1. graphics are much better, each player looks like the real one, plus the detail is incredible.2. The gameplay is improved over madden, playing this game is almost like watching a live football game.3. The AI is much better than Madden.4. The play books are VERY in depth, this gives you many more options.5. This game costs less than half of Madden games.CONS:1. The controls take a while to learn, you have to unlearn the madden controls.I recommend renting this game to make sure it is for you. We all have different tasts and there is no use wasting $20 on something somebody else loves!
Best game ever.
This throw back game is better than the latest Madden
Awesome football game. One of the best
