I’m a HUGE fan of the Arkham Horror board game. That said, there is a lot to process with Arkham Horror: The Card Game. I’ll break it down as to what really stands out for me.Pros:Has an even more moody feel than Arkham Horror. There are in depth stories that you’ll play through that really bring out the Lovecraftian setting.Easier to play solo than Arkham Horror. There aren’t nearly as many pieces, and as much to remember. It makes for a cleaner experience. The combat mechanic is simpler. Instead of rolling dice for horror checks and combat checks and everything else, you just pull a random modifier out of a bag. Once again, easier for solo play in my opinion.Cons:The price. $35 for one starter box, and you need 2 starter boxes to play with over 2 players. Other Fantasy Flight games feel like bargains with all of the cards and miniatures you get in a box. Literally all you are getting for $70 here are a bunch of cards that you won’t use and some cardboard tokens. The replay factor is low. Since you are playing through stories you may not want to go through it a bunch of times. Yeah, you might go back to see how things end up if you do a certain room different or better, but overall you probably aren’t going to play through this more than a few times at most. There are a lot of expansions for the game, but once again you’ll be dropping more money for something that you probably will not want to play very much after the initial run.Overall, I LOVE AH and I LOVE Fant.
Great game, great story, inspired by one of the greatest authors. I need more friends to play more often.
Arkham Horror: The Card Game is amazing. From the theme to the adaptability and expandability this living card game provides you can not go wrong if you are a fan of Lovecraftian fiction. This core set comes with enough starter cards for two players and includes a self contained 3 chapter campaign. I personally would recommend buying 2 copies of the core set if you wish to play with more than 2 players as there will not be enough player cards with just one set. This game can be played solo or with friends and changes everytime you play (even after you know the story) thanks to the randomness of the card shuffles, deck builds, difficulty levels, and clever game design that incorporates multiple outcomes depending on how well you succeed or how bad you fail. There is a lot of replay value here and the cards and game components look fantastic. There are also multiple scenario packs (self contained side adventures) and expansions (new story arcs) and mythos packs (continuations of story arcs) available for this game. My wife and I are having a blast with this game and I cannot recommend it enough.
A little effort is required to get your mind wrapped around the whole thing (sorting, storage, mythos packs, etc), but /r/arkhamhorrorlcg/ and forums on BGG are a great place to get help. Once you manage your way through “what do I do with all of these cards”, open the “Learn to Play” book and go step by step, or (probably and) watch the official tutorial video on YouTube. In no time you will be thrust into a world of horror as your chosen investigator embarking on what will become an epic journey. The first scenario (included in this Core set) is very short, but teaches you the basics. As you learn to play you will need to keep the Rules Reference book handy (don’t worry, you just look up a word or situation here and there, don’t read it cover to cover), but by the end of it you will have the hang of it.The second scenario in the Core box (and frankly, right before you set up scenario 2, while you are realizing the deck-building possibilities of the upgrade system) shows you just how big this experience is going to get. How every time it hits your table your are in for a grand adventure. That you really are in control of your character in an RPG fashion and not just playing cards from your hand to one-up an opponent. There are three scenarios included in the Core set, which is enough to get you started, and hooked. but you will quickly realize you need more of these types of adventures (and cards!). You WANT more. You /NEED/ more. If you have a shoestring budget this may not b.
Although it took me a few videos, and plays to really get it down, I can say it is my favorite game I’ve ever played. And now I can’t stop. I spent quite a while on just the core set, and did enjoy playing it over and over. I found that I enjoyed it so much, that it was very much worth investing in more. And more… And MORE.It is an awesome game.I suggest watching tutorials, as less time researching rules is worth it. A guy called “Grey Gamer” has the best, and easiest to follow that I found.
This game overall is excellent! It is a ton of fun. I originally bought it to have a fun H.P. Lovecraft inspired game that didn’t quite take as long as the Arkham Horror Board Game (1st Edition) that I could easily play with my wife. Also wanted something Co-op, we often play Dominion but sometimes I’d rather play with my wife and not against her. She will play the more complicated games with me, however I have to walk her through it patiently.I was very impressed with the rule book, as the Arkham Horror Boardgame rule book was extremely complicated and poorly organized/written. I was pleased to have a “Learn How to Play” guide to get you into the game. Then a second Nexis that helps you easily look up terms and rules organized alphabetically. Great job overall on this! Though even with a well layed out rule book, the game is still really confusing to get into at first. It almost feels like some things just aren’t fully or clearly explained. Resulting in a few online searches after not being 100% on the intent of the rule book’s explanation. This caused my wife to be irritated as we had to stop the game multiple times to check rules during our first play. After we grasped the concept better our second play has been going a lot more smoothly. Some Rules we didn’t understand the first play through:”Attack of Opportunity”, and “Prey” but a a few forums and videos better defined what happens. Also Skill checks, being able to use other cards like Event, or assets cards without payin.
This game is pretty complicated, but if you are willing to spend some time with the rule books it is an interesting one to play. I have been playing it solo, and enjoying it very much. The role-playing and cooperative aspect is somewhat lessened, but there is no reason you can’t go through the stories and continuing set of scenarios by yourself playing a couple of characters.I am through the three scenarios contained in the base set, and I am looking to purchase a few of the expansions. it is really great that all the cards needed are contained in the set (no booster packs to suck your wallet dry). I also think that the ability to play several different characters (an combinations of characters) is a huge attraction, and that this will provide enough replayability to justify the price of the set. FFG makes quality components and captures Lovecraft themes with such skill that any fan of gaming and the Lovecraftian horror genre will enjoy this game.I also like the expansion of the character decks in between sessions. There are some deck building elements to the game that provide an interesting mechanic and some difficult decisions as you progress. It is not a really intense deck building game (you spend more time playing than building, which is nice), but how you stack the character decks will really affect how the game plays. I tried a few different strategies for the same two characters, and I found that the level of challenge remained moderate, but winnable, and that the gam.
It is my first Purchase on retrolio and i’m amazed with how Quick and Simple this internet retailer works. The order came in less than two weeks and the package was packed very neatly.the quality of Arkham Horror is just perfect, (not that i expected something else) US always produce and do everything better than any other country.Thank You very much for your service!
It’s okay. A little overly complicated for my taste and its takes a while to figure out the rules. Still don’t know if I’m doing everything right, but it’s fun.
I recommend setting game up and playing through until you die. And in your next game of arkham horror, do not reshuffle cards. Warning: if you keep reshuffling every time you die, you memorize the cards thus spoil the ENTIRE game.Would I recommend? Only if you know what arkham is already. But no big loss if you don’t get it.
