I was surprised when I saw how low this console was selling for, so I decided to pick one up. The game selection is extremely weak and the controllers don’t have analog sticks, but this system is pretty awesome once you mod it. You don’t even have to open up the console to add games to it. The instructions are just a simple online search away and you can have your favorite library of games installed on this very easily. You can also emulate other retro consoles on this as well, such as NES, SNES, Genesis, Turbo Grafx 16, Gameboy Advance, and I was even able to run Marvel vs Capcom 2 from the Sega Dreamcast. If you really break down what you are getting for the asking price, this thing is a bargain. 2 usb controllers, a really cool looking mini PS1 shell, and a cpu board that is capable of emulating every retro console before 1999. If you plan on buying this without modifying it at all, you will get bored of it quickly, but otherwise this thing is a no-brainer to buy for yourself or as a gift for someone who loves to tinker around with emulators.
Games played: Final Fantasy VII, R4 Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, Mr. Driller, Revelations: Persona, Intelligent Qube.Frame Rate: DonĆ¢ā¬ā¢t know what some folks are talking about because, save for one weird instance, I experienced no noticeable frame rate drops. That weird instance happened in FFVII when the camera panned up to show Mako Reactor 1 at the start of the game. Oddly enough loading into the battle screen is faster than the original release. But Tekken 3 and Ridge Racer, the games this arguably would be the biggest problem for, ran smooth.Save States: The main complaint IĆ¢ā¬ā¢ve heard is that each game only has one save state. While true this is misleading since, in addition to that, each game also has an accompanying virtual memory card. These work just like they did back in the day so, in addition to the save state, you can make up to sixteen saves using the memory card. This I like because it gives me a purer experience.Aspect Ratio: This is set at what it was during the original release with no option to change it. This is annoying for games like Ridge Racer 4 or Tekken 3 but, ultimately when combined with its reliance on virtual memory cards for multiple saves, I think this is intentional. When I was a teen I didnĆ¢ā¬ā¢t have the option to change the aspect ratio of my games, I was stuck with whatever it was on the disk. ItĆ¢ā¬ā¢s an unusual kind of authenticity but one I can appreciate given what this system is meant to evoke. So though the option would have been nice I ultim.
I get some of the complaints people have about this console but I also think some gripes are a tad exaggerated. I personally was not enthralled with the game selection…but it has at least some RPGs. It is also very small and light. If you travel a lot for work, this is far less cumbersome than the actual ps1 (or even ps3 or ps4). If you regularly have to stay in hotels and such because of work, this works just great with every TV I have tried it with thus far (HDMI). It is also nice not to have to schlep CDs with you. Button delay? I have noticed it in some games…luckily I pretty much just stick to RPGs where that is less of an issue. I am not brave enough to hack it myself but I have a neighbor that has a thumb drive on his own ps classic and he was able to add a lot of games. The controllers are actually very nice and sturdy. I was expecting the controllers to be cheaply made but they seem quite solid to me. Games also do generally seem significantly faster than their ps1 counterpart (ff7 for example since not loading from CD rom). I wouldn’t have paid $99 but at the current pricing (and even slashed prices a few months back) it is starting to make these units that much more of a bargain. Also lower power use than the original (for those living off the grid or on solar power, this is a pretty good console for occasional use).
I only really bought this for Final Fantasy IV, and so far it delivers exactly as I thought it would. Mind you the graphics are like 20+ years old so it’s not the most cutting edge, however I didn’t have any expectations greater than what it was back when it was a current unit. This little bundle guy saves me the hassle of trying to find a console somewhere that actually works, and then getting the game(s) I want to play…controllers are comfortable, cord is a little short but I have a chair in front of the TV and it’s fine. We play this on our 40′ smart TV, I think any TV larger than this really pixelates the game and makes it super hard on the eyes. I only wish they had Crash Bandicoot, GoldenEye or Final Fantasy Tactics for this unit. That maybe would push my review up to a 5.
im pretty sure these people leaving negative reviews think mayonnaise is spicy.console is fine, games work fine, its a lot of fun if you are not a biased little child. i am only taking 1 star off because it does not come with a power brick.also the people complaining about the game selection, you do realize these are the games that do not require a dualshock controller and these are the games that started the playstation franchise, then later down the road we started seeing dualshock controllers and a bigger and better game selection. sony did nothing wrong here, THIS IS WHAT THEY STARTED WITH! i am also sure we will see some “upgrades” or some sort of attachments for this down the road.Update: i saw some complaints about frame rate issues, i noticed not 1. maybe those people should not play their games on a potato.
This thing is awesome. I got the original PS One for Christmas many years ago, and here it is again! The negative reviews on this thing are WAY WAY INACCURATE.You can change the settings on these games by pressing the select+triangle button on the controller during the playstation load screen. You can change the game from the European version to the US version, you can load as many games as you want to the console using a USB thumb drive. Sony made this thing open source so you could hack it up however you want. Don’t listen to these people crying and whining about how bad it sucks, because it doesn’t. This thing is awesome! I like the game list it came with, lots of stuff I never played. It has been really awesome to add my favorites Resident Evil 2, NFL Gameday, Gran Turismo with a simple USB thumb drive.Trust me, it’s awesome. Totally worth it. There is a TON of videos on youtube on how to do all this stuff I have mentioned above.ENJOY!!!!!
I am obsessed with these miniature consoles. I have SNES, NES, Commodore 64 and now Sony Playstation. I had heard less-than-stellar reviews about this, but after reading up online on how to expand this system to include more games, it became my go-to classic console, reliving classics and trying games I’ve never sampled before. The stock assortment of games is fine, but you’re missing Tony Hawk Pro Skater and, inexplicably, Crash Bandicoot. Would have loved more fighting games, as PSX was as great for those as it was for RPGs and sports games. Some of the games used the PAL versions, for some reason. This causes moderate slowdown as it’s not meant for NTSC (North America) television sets. That said, if you’re looking to expand it beyond the stock games, it’s a fun and easy mod project at a basement-bargain price (less than the price of a Pi when it goes on sale). Definitely worth picking up for the OEM controllers and slick console casing alone.
My youngest brother loves videogames, but he has trouble with most of them due to having down syndrome. Anything too complex becomes frustrating for him since he can’t really pick up the story and sometimes even the basic functionality of a game will be more than he can grasp. Fighting games, however, are much easier. It’s very easy for him to learn the basics of a fighting game, and with the difficulty set a little lower, he can usually button mash his way to victory. I’ve introduced him to a number of fighting games over time, since he enjoys them so much, and one has CONSTANTLY remained his absolute favorite . . . . Tekken 3. Any chance he got he would ask me to let him play it, and many times I did oblige him.Of course, over time I got married and moved out, taking my consoles with me. Every now and then he’d get a chance to come visit and I’d always start up the PS3 and let him play Tekken 3 for a bit while he was over. Over time, opportunities for him to play during visits dwindled due to a variety of reasons, though he woudl still ask to play it every time he visited and, of course, every now and then I’d make sure to let him.All that to say, I only bought the PSOne Classic to give to him for his birthday so he could play Tekken 3 any time he wants to his little heart’s content. It may not be the greatest port of the game, but it runs fine as far as I can see and my little brother absolutely loves it.
On board games are lacking and original PS controllers are good for nostalgia but lack the rumble and analog stick functionality required to fully enjoy some of the great games. They hit the major 2 titles (FF7 and MGS) but missed a ton of great games in favor of things like Intelligent Qube with many games apparently being PAL versions. If you use bleemsync and you have legal copies of the NTSC versions, you can easily put 50 of your favorites on a 32GB flash drive and they run great on whatever emulator Sony packed in there. Also, I would recommend the 8bitdo so you can link a dualshock 4 to add the stick and rumble functiknality. Bleemsync can be used in conjunction with some usb hubs since the slot required for your 2nd controller is taken by a usb stick but I have not tried yet.
I have to be sincere the included games besides a few are awful my song and I laughed a lot at the idea that those were the best games Sony could come up with, probably the ones that they have to pay less fees or what not, that being said the emulator running on it is a version of the PCSX emulator that has been running around for years, make sense for Sony to use it since was already there anyways, the good thing / bad thing for Sony that is, is that this is super easy to just manipulate with a few methods, in my case just get an usb drive get the proper software on it load the games that I really want and there you go, open for all the games of your youth!!, so with that this thing get it’s 5 stars after you get that done it opens you the whole catalog of games and it works amazing, for the 20 included I don’t even remember most of them, I recommend it if you either want it as collectible or to have it modded is a nice little thing just remember the included games except a few are really bad! enjoy!!
