Legend of Heroes is a must 30 year old series and a must for RPG and especially JRPG fans.
Legend of Heroes is a good game, but it has a few flaws that are just terrible, and really bring it down. If only Bandai had taken the time to polish it a bit more, it would be a great game. While a bit linear, I found the characters engaging and really looked forward to the next bit of the story as I went through the game. Without spoiling the ending, I thought that the last dungeon was done well, and reminded me of playing Final Fantasy IV or VI.My major beef with this game is the translation. It is just horrible. There are constant spelling errors, sentences that just don’t make sense and words that are just mixed up.Other minor things bugged me as well… some prompts you are given to select an option have the unfortunate problem of being smaller than the border created to go around them. (This happens when resting in people’s homes sometimes) Or another minor flaw is often when someone important speaks, the game colors their text blue… but then the next 10 lines of dialogue from the normal characters are blue as well.Apart from the sloppiness there, I really did enjoy the game… It was better than I expected it to be.
This was a good buy. Quality game, no hassles in the order/delivery process. Overall good buy. No complaints.
I am a big fan of classic RPG, and this game is the best so far. For the most part it is Golden Sun next gen. The look of the game is great, and as to the last reviewer, all classic RPG are story based. so you are going to have alot of talking in it. The battle system works of this type of RPG. But I will agree with him that if you love this type of game, go get it asap. if not pass on it.
I am tired of people saying this game isn’t good and to buy Kingdom of Paradise instead. Why would people say things like that? These two are very different games, and role playing games. One of them is an action RPG… meaning for all those impatient people who want nothing but hack and slashing, that’s the game for you. I personally love both games, and would never criticize something like this. Both games came out the same day, just because of that you have to compare them to each other? This is, really a great game… It goes back to being as good as any classic RPG that has been made. Everything that is imagined and needed for how a fantasy should be is done here. I recommend this game to everyone. Everything about it is a challenge.
I found the story to be very captivating. The turn based fighting style was good too, if a little hard at times. It was my favorite out of the Legend of Heroes series that I played. I would like to have seen a bit more within the game / story.
I say the closest thing to playing A Tear of Vermilion was Game Arts’ incredible Lunar series (the first two games really, the Silver Star Story and Lunar Eternal Blue)….this game is a wonderful attempt to emulate that series’ great storytelling and even-handed turn-based gameplay….does Legend of Heroes: Tear of Vermilion succeed in that regard? I think it does despite localization problems stemming from the translation, but I think it is a very minor issue in enjoying the game….the game is pretty linear (like Lunar), has an almost identical combat system, and has an extensive list of NPC’s in the story….The game’s strongest suit is the storyline revolving around the relationship between Avin (the protagonist) and Mile and their journey to find Avin’s long-lost sister….they encounter many new friends and enemies throughout…and set things in motion in the Garghav trilogy, as they search for the lost continent…..Overall, a lovely game, great graphics for an older JRPG, decent sound, good gameplay and most importantly a great story…..
recetly, my PSP got stolen, with this gameand I order another PSP, and this gamewhy?I had lot of fun with the game, I have been through 60% overallthe storyline is smooth, decent battle system (but I think Avin, Mile deadly are similar)pet system may be a plus, but I prefer it’s neither happy nor angry, because it helps you pickup item, that makes the recovery easier (you can ONLY carry up to 10 each), but I don’t think buying petfood can change the pet’s moodrunning errand may be kinda boring, you may need to mess with some monsters to gain some money (you can escape easily with blue, no way with red)graphic is great, no problem with zooming, sound is great toobut game save control is kinda confusing, and I make error with itfor a die-hard RPG fans, this game is a must for PSP userupdate: I have finished the game, the ending is LONG (about an hour), and complete, toggle between a conversation between Rutice and Avin; and other member, the ending is pretty worth to watch
The translation quality is very low. They didn’t proofread their own work. The interface is dull. The Windows version is much better. I appreciated the illustration though.
Think about this game like so many of the 16 bit RPGs, especially Lufia and others that were just off on the edge of mainstream RPGs. If you really compare it to games like those, then you might be able to give this a fair shake. Though it isn’t really a standout among the slew of great RPGs produced nowadays (this is a re-release after all), it does appeal to someone like me who is addicted to old school RPG and can look beyond the bad translation (hello Final Fantasy Tactics on the PS1 – terrible translation in parts).I agree with many reviewers and believe that the Japanese text was run through an auto translate and then ‘spruced up’ a bit. Many of the lines don’t make much sense. This is more noticeable early in the game. One particular reason I believe this to be the case is when the kids keep calling the tutors (or priests, or whatever they are) professor. The Japanese word for teacher, leader, instructor, or any person that is educating you is sensei. If you watch as much Japanese anime and film as I do, you notice students in high school saying “hai sensei!”. But the direct translation of sensei is professor, and this is the word that an auto translate would choose. But ‘teacher’ or some such would have been what a proper translator would have selected. Also, the fact that there are no translator credits at the end is a dead giveaway. But the translation actually gets a little better, and it’s often hokey and amusing. Not as bad as “all your base are belong.
