Capcom does it again. This game, ported from an arcade game, is a classic example of how popular beat ’em ups were in the early 1990’s, both in the arcade and on home consoles. The Final Fight games, the Streets of Rage games, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games (TMNT 2-5) were the dominant brand, and this game is a unique installment in the genre. There is only one other game in the beat ’em up genre that I consider to be similar, which is King of Dragons (also an arcade, also ported to SNES). However, King of Dragons seemed to be more inspired by Tolkien elements, which is pretty fun. Knights of the Round is derived from medieval fantasy and mythology, most notably the legends of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, the Quest for the Holy Grail, and the uniting of the Britons. Just awesome. There are three characters to choose from. Arthur, the wielder of the sword Excalibur, Lancelot, and axe-wielding Percival. Lancelot is the quickest character, Percival is the strongest character, and Arthur falls somewhere in the middle, making him a good choice. Lancelot has a move where he will jump kick off his enemies and Percival has a short dash move. Percival is a character for expert players due to his crummy jump attack move. The control is good and fluid. Most players will take a while to figure out that the trick to success in this game is learning to block. If you successfully block an attack, you are invulnerable for one second or so. Also, a quick double tap f.
I’ve always looked at this game as Capcom’s apology to anyone who spent hours of there life wasted on Super Ghouls And Ghosts, which although technically sound and at first seemingly fun, can take you the same amount of time to pass the first stage as it would to conquer Knights Of The Round in it’s entirety. Now that that’s out of the way, Knights Of The Round is a classic Capcom clone(in other words, the result of taking there Final Fight game and interchanging it with any number of licensed and unlicensed properties), so it plays just like any beat ’em up should. You choose one of 3 characters(Arthur, Lancelot, and Percival) who have varying degrees of speed an power, and set out to reunite the land– not with diplomacy mind you, but rather by bashing the attack button on your controller as hard and fast as possible! And that’s basically it, though Capcom did throw a handy block button in to mix things up a bit. The graphics and music are also trademark Capcom quality which help round this out as one of the top beat ’em ups for the Super Nintendo. The only real negatives about the game are that it can be beat in about an hour, that it plays much better with 2 players(so if you’re an only child, friend-deficient, or live in the middle of nowhere… this game may lose some enjoyment), and of course, that it’s a beat ’em up– which means walking from left to right and pounding various goons into d.

Capcom knew how to make great games and this one is no exception. Set in the world of King Arthur, you can control one of three knights (Arthur, Lancelot, and Percival), each with their different statistical traits. This game is more fun with two players. When you’re playing by yourself, it’s not quite as fun due to the difficulty level of the game. Nevertheless, a superb multiplayer game. Don’t listen to the reviewer below that calls this a bad game. This one’s a classic and a must-have for any Super NES library.
