First of all, this game is part of a PS1 series called Koudelka (think I spelled that right.) and the sequel to shadow hearts 1. I never played Koudelka, but have completed SH1 and SH2 many times, I purchased this to run headlong down memory lane.So Shadow Hearts: covenant takes place in an alternate fantasy history WW1 era Paris, it follow main characters Yuri, and Karin, the story focuses more on Yuri than anything, but it tries to place Karin (Box Art) as the lead, and it is a wild ride! There are a few references to SH1, but most of them are either fairly innocuous or explain themselves fairly quickly. It sets itself up like a JRPG, as you build a team of unique characters who each fill a specific role, streangths, weaknesses, etc. It is comepletely turn based, and gear centric, but it uses a unique game mechanic called the, “Ring of Fate.” (I think) which really turns the genre on its head and is what makes this game such a joy to play. Once you select your action this ring comes up on screen and you have to hit X in certain segments to determine if you crit, how often you hit, if there are bonuses, etc. So you dont just select attack and the game takes over, there is an active mechanic to it as well. The graphics have not aged too well, with facial animations looking the most jarring, lips not moving, held objects floating awkwardly, and eyes… just being a bit much. Scenery is pretty good for PS2 era, with the kindof washed out static background and the stylized foregr.
One of the best games PS2 has to offer!
High quality packaging, item as described.
I never played the first Shadow Hearts, and I can tell you that I was completely impressed with Covenant. I love the innovative battle system, and the in-game variety. The story is entirely refreshing. I find it compelling that the plot centers around secret societies, not unlike the Illuminati of the real world– well, except of course, for the wild ability to unleash evil over the entire planet (using the power of souls, gods, magical power and other junk like that). The cast of characters is well done. The voice acting is exceptional. Yuri is very believable, but I get extremely annoyed every time I hear Lucia talk. Also, the little innuendos, and bits of humor are very well placed within the story line. It’s semi-adult humor and I got quite a few kicks from it.I’m a fairly avid Final Fantasy fan, and I’d say this game is highly competitive in the fantasy genre. In fact, I’ve been playing FF online, and this console game sort of ripped me away from the cyber world of Vana’diel.I’d recommend this game to any RPG fan, regardless of whether they’ve played the first one or not.
This game is engaging, funny, and challenging but not to the point where it’s difficult. I love the story, I feel for the characters (the ring soul is my favorite), and I like the judgement ring. A MUST OWN game for PS2. I would daresay this rivals final fantasy 10.
Very impressed with delivery time, the condition of the discs, case, and manual. The game was practically pristine. Would definitely buy from here again!
I literally just finished this game tonight after racking up about 32 hours of gameplay. My fiancee used to play this game and said its her all time favorite and I was very hesitant to play as it didnt look to good. I owe her an apology as this game has surpassed all my expectations.Graphics: Amazing considering its on the PS2. The real cutscenes are on par with even some of the newest games.Plot line: So much going on, many plot twists and the story unfolds over the course of the entire game. You become engrossed in it! or at least I did, I cried at the end!Gameplay: THe judgement ring is very different but adds a new thrill to turn based combat and makes it interesting. At first I thought combat was to frequent but Im glad I fought everything or else the final boss would have been impossible.Overall: This is an amazing game and well worth you’r money. I have put 32 hours of game play in and thats without going through everything I could in the main quest let alone all of the side quests that are there. It was just amazing for me 10/10
The Good: Engaging story, ring system fully immerses the player in the combat, fun and frequent boss fights, memorable characters, crest magic allows everyone to use magicThe Bad: Random battles are really annoying, maze like levels are down right frustrating, poor pacing, spotty voice acting, some level grinding is required to finish the final boss, acquiring abilities by fighting certain people and talking means you end up missing themShadow Hearts is a JRPG that is all about politics and religion, of course what JRPG isn’t? Covenant has a very interesting story with memorable characters, however the pacing is a bit off. You play as Yuri, a young man stricken with a curse called the Mistletoe. This locks out his inner powers inside his heart and you are trying to find a cure for it. Along the way you meet many people with various abilities for combat. The story is a bit involved and complicated, but it is interesting. I could try to explain it, but it would take nearly 3-4 paragraphs just to do that.Let’s start with the combat. Shadow Hearts uses a ring system where a needle spins around a ring and you press X when it falls in the yellow and red areas. Each character has different sized hit areas and different amounts. You want to try to get it in the red which is a strike zone which does extra damage, but it can be hard because some character’s strike zones are small 2 pixel slivers. You can acquire expansions for these areas and you can customize your ring. Once you get g.
Awsome game and a dame shame its not more well known only had a few gripes with the storry even if it works as i haven’t played the first on due to how much it is
I was shown this game by a friend of mine after it was already pulled off the shelves. I first played its pedecessor Shadow Hearts, and I liked that, it wasnt great but it was likeable. Bu this game I believe is the best in the series. the gameplay is fun, the story is quirky and I found all of the characters likeable. I would say that anyone who likes games like final fantasy X, or the tales series will probably like this game.
