I bought this game a while ago and although it is a bit dated as compared to other medieval theme FPS’s, it was released in 1997, the PC version having been released in 1994, so you have to expect dated graphics. But, if you can get beyond that, it is very deep game full of twists and turns and real thinking to figure it all out. It took me a while, but I finally beat the game.I love Doom and Final Doom on the PS1 and still play them occasionally to this day in year 2014, and although they are faster moving and the graphics a shade better, there is something to be said about the medieval theme and platform jumping and such. The only other Doom ‘clones’ FPS’s that are decent on the PS1 are Alien Trilogy, Quake II or possibly Powerslave, but the moodiness and medieval theme are quite striking and awe-inspiring for a game. Sure, you’ve got World of Warcraft, Diablos, etc that are amazing looking on the PC nowadays, but if you’re not into online gaming and like the consoles, then this is a great game to be had.The biggest thing is to purchase the official Hexen strategy guide if you can find it reasonably now. Use it not to cheat, but if you get hopelessly stuck and cannot figure where to go next, it is helpful instead of giving up on the game, and I will admit I’ve gotten stuck on more than one puzzle. Also, that guide gives you some information on how things are set up and what to expect. This is no RPG by any stretch, even though it has a few elements of it such as the a.
When you bring up the early to mid 90’s what held the strongest foundation in the gaming industry were clearly the first person shooters. The popular FPS style games on PC were making their way to home consoles.Regarding the Sony PlayStation I do wish it picked up a tad earlier to see Heretic:Shadow of the Serpent Rider(the title before Hexen:Beyond Heretic) hit home consoles or Rise of the Triad but popularity on certain titles managed to distract others from truly gifted titles. But riding on that tradition of Heretic by GT Interactive came Hexen and was a phenomenal game.So what made Hexen such a great game?As far as selecting what kind of character you play determines what your weapons will be like. For example the green potion bottles(Flechettes) you collect are like bombs. With the warrior he’ll chuck them and they respond like a grenade instead of timing they can explode on enemy impact. The cleric I believe he sets his on the ground and explodes creating a poisonous gas cloud and lingers injuring enemies that contact it.Another example is an item called The Dark Servant which when used will conjure a monster that will attack enemies for you.An item that lets you fly which (if you play the game) you’ll understand why it’s handy.A lot of items in this game to collect as well as armor and health vials. And these items aren’t instant on touch like Doom they’re stored in an inventory menu easy to access on your status bar.You can switch to whatever weapons you’ve collected as so.
The delivery arrived right on time. Case contains no box art/manual, though I expected as much ordering a used game from the 90s.The disc is indeed of the original black PlayStation design; It appears pristine and contains no visible markings.Booted up the game on my PlayStation 2 and it ran smoothly for over 2 hours with no issues. All around a good buy and I would recommend it.
Received as described! Disc in pretty good shape. Game itself is an excellent FPS classic but with somewhat difficult controls
This game HARDLY sucks. It’s a classic, along with Doom….the only differences being in this one you can jump, the graphics are a tad poorer than Doom’s, and the sorcery theme and weapons….they’re a nice change of pace from the bad-ass guns of Doom. This game came out originally for the PC over 11 years ago, so you’ll just have to excuse the primitive look of the graphics….at that time, they were unbelievable.I have both the N64 and PSX versions of this game, and neither disappoint me in any way!Overall, 9 out of 10….
Very fun game BY I.D Software
