Classic Terry Gilliam flick… lots of steampunk design sets, combined with a twisty plot. Bruce Willis does a great job as James Cole, navigating a time travel maze of clues about how to stop a man made virus from wiping out the planet.
Great movie
How I always know that a movie is good, is if it is on tv, you come across at any point in the movie and watch the whole thing everytime. With commercials, even if it is sitting on your shelf. This is one of those movies! Amazing script. So well played out by the actors, that each time you expect a different outcome because you get so drawn into the story.
This movie should at least have been nominated for an academy award if not outright won one for best picture! An unusual role for Bruce Willis and he is superb – Madeline Stowe has never been better and Brad Pitt is right at home as a borderline crazy person. Frank Gorshen as the head of a psychiatric hospital gives nothing short of an inspired performance. The plot is so convoluted I had to watch it more than once to follow everything. Terry Gilliam puts his unique stamp on the props and the direction.
Leaning more toward 4.75 stars here…I love Terry Gilliam, I truly do. But so much of his work suffers from too much creativity (Brazil, Baron Munchausen, etc.) that his brilliant vision often turns into clutter and noise. He needs a steadier hand to guide him at times, and we’ve found it with David People’s marvelous screenplay.12 Monkeys is Gilliam’s most disciplined, moving and thought-provoking film precisely because we are able to relate to its ideas surrounding insanity, paranoia and doomsday.Bruce Willis is a convict in a dystopian future where nearly all of mankind has been killed off by a super-virus unleashed in 1996. The survivors live underground like rats and the animals (immune to the virus) are the only creatures on the surface. He is recruited to go back in time to retrieve a sample virus so that the scientist plutocrats who rule his society can develop a vaccine.OK, typical plot developments occur, right? “Bruce, back in the 1990s, is considered a crack-pot and a looney and he’s locked up. He’s got to get out and complete his mission and there’s one person who can help: Dr. Kathryn Reilly, psychiatrist and do-gooder.”But wait, there’s more. So much more, including Brad Pitt (in my favorite performance as the maniac who may be behind the virus); complex time travel that effectively distorts YOUR idea of what’s real; man’s corruption of the earth; and a vision of humanity’s collective madness that only Gilliam could capture.Because at the center is Bruce Willi.
Writer/director Terry Gilliam’s output has been uneven, sometimes he has a winner like “Time Bandits” or “The Fisher King” and other times the results can be wildly uneven like “Brazil”- a film I found wildly confusing or “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” which I found incomphrensible despite the efforts of Johnny Depp and Benicio DelToro. But this sci-fier bears none of those faults for I was completely engrossed in what was happening in the story. It also boasts great performances from Bruce Willis and an Oscar nominated one from Brad Pitt as a schizophrenic patient. I don’t want to reveal too much of the plot but if you’re into time travel movies–this ones for you. I will probably purchase this in HD DVD since it is so ridiculously so low that it makes the price in Blu-ray to be a crime!! By the way, this film is based or inspired by the French film, “La Jetee”.
Great movie. Sometimes I hate the endings of great movies but that’s the reason they’re great. It’s in my top 100 but that’s because I’ve probably seen 5000 movies in the past 50 or more years.
This is an unsual movie and with the time travel element "jumps around" so you have to really pay attention to follow the plot but it is well worth it. All the actors are wonderful and it is a interesting story line – well worth the watch!
nice product…fast shipping!
Sophisticated story line. Visionary imagery by Terry Gilliam, Brad Pitt in what might still be his best and most complex performance role, Bruce Willis working as a serious and nuanced character, the ever-amazing Madeleine Stowe. I love this movie.
