As an overview Dead Space 2 is fantastic, one of the BEST games i have played this gen, or all time as a matter of fact. Every aspect of the game is nailed with mastery and outstanding quality. The atmosphere is gritty, dark enough to set the right mood (scary!) but not to the point of being annoying. After playing through half the campaign one might think that the game wont scare you anymore because it is “deciphered”, wrong! This game keeps getting one off guard at any given corner. The characters are well developed, nothing spectacular but it fits just right. I did not liked the original that much, but the sequel caught me off guard and im hooked! I have not touched the online, not for me on this game.Love the game, would recommend to anyone with a sweet tooth for high quality games, Dead Space 2 delivers the goods and then some
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this game since i never played the first one. It’s been a while since i wanted play a good horror game, and DS2 does a good job. the single player campaign is very enjoyable, I really like the atmosphere this game delivers, sometimes you’ll find yourself walking through deserted and creepy hallways and suddenly you’ll be forced to fight waves of disturbing creatures and then you’ll be walking alone again, I’m really enjoying the camping so far.The multiplayer is not something revolutionary but it’s alright. When playing on the human team you’ll have to accomplish some objectives, but to be honest it’s kinda hard to accomplish those objectives since you need teamwork and there’s always someone that wants to play ‘ala rambo’ so i just give up on trying to complete the missions and i just try to kill as many enemies as i can. I thing i do like about the MP is playing as a necromorph, specially when i play as ‘the pack’.
The original Dead Space had a nice advantage of taking relatively low expectations and generally blowing them away. I liken my experience with it to my first viewing of the Matrix…I didn’t expect much but was incredibly surprised. Dead Space 2, for me, was more like having breakfast at grandmother’s house…I had high expectations, and generally got exactly what I wanted. That may make it sound like a disappointment, but that is far from the truth (and then again you never had breakfast at my grandma’s). Both the original and its successor have for me a large list of merits (as well as a few flaws), but overall I loved both games. Even after playing each more than once and back to back, it’s hard for me to say which is my favorite, and I consider that high praise for DS2.DS2 feels very much like its predecessor, in terms of gameplay and story. The developers, however, are to be complimented for some nice improvements. As much as Dead Space looked great, the graphical improvement in DS2 is noticeable from the start. Gameplay is very similar, but has been tightened up in ways that felt exactly right for me. Implementation of zero gravity is much better this time around, and gone are the frustrating tourret sequences. I’ve read and heard much about whether the sequel’s story is in some way inferior, but for me it was very much like the first one. I played the original on its own (without benefit of any of the other media), and felt the story was interesting but generally ju.
Simply put I loved the original Dead Space and thus when Dead Space 2 came out it was a day 1 purchase for me. After finishing the game (~14h) and playing multiplayer for couple of hours this is what I thought.***********PROS************A SURVIVAL HORROR: While Dead Space 2 is slightly deviating from Dead Space 1 in terms of it is being more cinematic (more dramatic cut scenes, more depiction Isaac as a character etc.), Dead Space 2 is still a survival horror. You will have to be careful of your surroundings, you will have to be careful about conserving your ammo and you will have to have to use different items you gain in the game very wisely to get through the game on normal or harder modes. So unlike games like Resident Evil, which has moved to purely action/adventure, Dead Space 2 is still a survival horror.ATTENTION TO DETAIL CREATING SPACE ENVIRONMENT: One of the reasons I loved Dead Space 1 and now Dead Space 2, is it is horror in space. In Dead Space 1 you are surviving in a space ship abandoned in Space and in this game you are doing similar in a city in space that is going through similar terror. While you may find these two settings very similar, there are some aspects that truly distinguish Dead Space 2 from 1. One of them being taking place in a city, you will have much greater variety in environment compared to Dead Space 1 and everything is designed so craftily that it actually feels like you are in the futuristic city in space. I truly want to give you example.
Put on a set of headphones and turn off the lights and get ready for your heart to start racing. Dead Space 1 & 2 are both one of a kind great games. I highly recommend playing ds 1 first to really understand the storyline. The controls are much more tight in ds 2 and and Isaac moves much more freely. There are no ridiculously impossible boss fights as in the first ds where you had to die more than a few times before figuring out the battle, even on casual difficulty. You definitely will have trouble falling asleep after playing this game at night, especially with the lights off and the sound turned up. It’s that fricking scary.I highly recommend you buy this game but get ds 1 first. Hell just buy both right now. They’re both dirt cheap on retrolio. Load up the games and get ready for a non-stop necromorph onslaught.
The original Dead Space brought back pure terror to video games. Something the survival horror genre was sorely lacking with the Resident Evil series moving so heavily towards action. It was truly special. Now with the sequel, they have upped the ante and doubled down on the terror and horror of being stranded and alone in space. I like the slight twist of action in the game as it only really adds to the experience. Issac is even more engaging, as it deals with his fractured psyche. Even the HD edition of Dead Space:Extraction is tons of fun and adds to the mythology of the story. Pretty cool addition. What was absolutely unnecessary was the addition of multiplayer. I know so many companies tack this onto their games to increase the replay value with gamers now demanding this as a requirement to even play. But, it just doesn’t fit and is maybe interesting if you’re bored. Other than that, definitely a great sequel and comes highly recommended.
I am not that big of a fan of horror games but this game is quiet the delight. It has the best sound I’ve heard, making the atmosphere very suspenseful and dramatically horrifying. There’s a reason why they won awards for their sound design. The gameplay was like the first game, very straightforward & focused. The movement is smooth but still very limited, although that is part of the design and it adds to the fear. There are a lot of tense moments where you are overwhelmed with monsters that pop up from everywhere, but that is the fun of it. The guns have been vastly improved and given better secondary fire as well as a few new weapons that are actually weapons and not engineering tools, and are very cool. There are a few new types of necromorphs, giving more variety. The story was alright for me, nothing too special about it, but it’s enough to keep the game going. Overall the single player was one of those games where I wanted to stop playing because theres too many suspenseful and scary moments but I still played it because it was so satisfying getting through the stage and killing those necromorphs using various powers and guns. Almost everything improved from the first game, the graphics, the gameplay, the sound, although the story doesn’t do much better than the first. I would recommend this game anytime. The multiplayer on the other hand, is just a bonus to it. It is a very basic objective based 4 vs. 4, necro vs. human game. It is fun for the first week or two but get.
Still on the fence about Dead Space 2?? Still haven’t played the original yet?? Well then the best thing you can do for yourself is spend $15, pick up a copy of the original game, and give it a play (alone… at night… and with the lights off of course)That’s how much I paid for it a few months ago as a newcomer to the Dead Space universe. What I found was an absolute gem of a game that kept me riveted in both dread and awe the entire time I played it. I can still recall the sense of amazement I felt the first time I stepped out into the Zero-G vacuum of space, and looked up at Aegis VII dominating the horizon, my breathing the only audible sound. The game was (almost!) a complete masterpiece from beginning to end, doling out a near perfect balance of tension, action, and epic science fiction set pieces.Contrary to some of the negative reviews you’ll read here at retrolio, I believe that Visceral got just about everything right with this sequel. They didn’t try to reinvent the wheel and kept the core gameplay intact, yet with enough enhancements that it feels more polished and improved over the original. Graphics are crisper, movement is smoother and more responsive, sounds are sharper (although I did have to boost the speech volume and lower the effects volume in order to clearly hear the dialogue), and new elements such as full range Zero-G movement really opened up some of the levels allowing for added puzzle solving. Visceral also cut a lot of the fat off and remo.
The original Dead Space has remained the most well-received survival-horror game of this generation, and Dead Space 2 continues that in a responsible manner. The story is a bit convoluted, but if you manage to grasp to essential parts of the story, it’s mind-evoking and intriguing. The combination of sci-fi elements, aliens, and insanity creates an experience that strays from the conventions of most survival horror titles we’ve come to love and enjoy (i.e. Resident Evil and Silent Hill).Gameplay is smooth, even more-so than its predecessor. There are a handful of weapons, each of which are satisfying to use, so you’ll be flooding online message boards with questions in no-time. The puzzle sequences get a bit annoying, but do help add some variety, although I reckon the game didn’t need it due to its amazing atmosphere. There are several key gameplay elements such as Zero G, and alternate fire modes that really give the game life. No qualms here. The presentation is simply outstanding. The graphics are solid, and although textures don’t compare to the likes of juggernauts such as Uncharted 2 and Killzone 3, the environmental effects, and shadows are nothing to scoff at. One of the best things about the game is a quality that is shared between both this title and its older brother: the audio. Aural effects are creepy, and create an environment where you never feel safe. Voice acting is executed well, and doesn’t hamper the story. Also, the way conversations are presented is parti.
Note: I am brand new to the series (better late than never).I played the original Resident Evil when it first came out in 1996, and ever since then I’ve loved survival horror/third person action games. Dead Space 2 is another outstanding addition to both genres. I thought nothing could ever top Resident Evil 4 in terms of quality, design, and sheer fun, but Dead Space 2 comes pretty close. The hallmarks of this game are its extremely creepy and oftentimes grotesque atmosphere, thrilling action sequences, and high degree of customization of your weapons and items.I’ve written a pretty detailed review–mostly intended for those new to the series like I am, so I’ll give an abbreviated version with scores right below if you don’t want to read what I have to say for each aspect of the game:Gameplay: 5/5Atmosphere: 5/5Graphics: 5/5Sound: 5/5Mechanics/ease of control: 4/5Story: 4/5Overall: 5/5ATMOSPHERE/GRAPHICS:In many ways the settings/environments make this game. Each area of the game has its own unique scares and horrific imagery. One aspect that I really liked was that the game throws you right in the deep end, forcing you to cope with enemies right from the start, and you never look back. This contrasts with many games (Resident evil 4/5, Half-Life, Doom 3, FEAR) in which everything starts quiet and normal, and then the situation quickly turns chaotic. The feeling of being hunted while unarmed and trying to figure your way out of the initial 20 minutes of the game really adde.
