As noted previously it’s diablo-like which is a plus, in my book. I rather enjoy the difference in leveling up the primary attribute to increase the damage for weapons for each class. I.e. monk-stamina, thief-agility
This is a very good game to collect for its price. I bought this game brand new at Kmart back in the day for only $20 and I think its worth its price. You’ll select a playable character, which you can select from 8 different characters. There;s a town you have with different stores you can buy and sell armor, potions, scrolls, food, and spell books. I would also recommend to always have some "magic door" scrolls on hand so you can easily go back to the town when you need to buy and sell items. Once you go out on your quest there are different lands which each one has a different quest. Each land has four levels where you will be battling monsters in each level as you locate special places of interest and discover lost treasures. But be careful some of the treasures are booby trapped. The stories are simple in each level, but still very fun to venture out on.For its day the graphics aren’t bad. It can be a pain that you must attain a certain skill level to equip certain armor or use spell books. The other bad feature on this game is the loading speed, it can be very slow. This game requires more memory on the memory card. Even though there are some flaws, it still is a good game for its purpose.
I have read reviews of Darkstone here and elsewhere, and the general consensus regarding this inexpensive game has been negative. If you are looking for one of those role-playing-for-shut-ins-type games with lots of talking between short stints of playing, then Darkstone is not for you. I like that I can play for a half hour now and then and have a good romp casting spells to whip trolls and what-not.The gist of Darkstone is simple. Find seven crystals to make the time crystal to beat the dragon at the end. There are eight different character types, male and female each of a wizard, warrior, thief, or the clergy. As you kill monsters along the way, you accumulate skills and magic bits and money. Who doesn’t like that? The only short comings of the game are how slow the transitions between scenes are and the fact that there is no two player mode. If Take2 made a sequel or another game like Darkstone, I would certainly buy it.
WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT THIS GAME I WAS TRYING TO FIND DIABLO FOR PSX (LITTLE DID I KNOW) YOU CAN’T FIND ONE ANYWHERE. ANY WAY, I LIKED IT, IT HAD PROBABLE THE BEST CARACTER DEVELOPMENT I HAVE EVER SEEN. PUMPING UP ATTRIBUTES, BUYING SKILLS AND, LEARNING MAGIC (I LOVED IT). THE DUNGEONS WERE GOOD, NICE AND DARK YOU HAVE TO USE LIGHT SPELLS!! I HAVE PLAYED LOTS OF RPG’S AND NEVER USED A LIGHT SPELL (EXCEPT THE ORIGINAL ZELDA) THE 360 ROTATING VIEW WAS NICE, IT COMPINCATED LACK OF GRAPHICS. THE QUEST LEFT A LITTLE TO BE WANTED, BUT IT IS A HACK AND SLASH. THE LOAD TIME STINKS ALMOST AS MUCH AS DIABLO. BUT ALL IN ALL I LIKED IT.
thanks
very good
I’ve just read some reviews for the game all over the net. Everyone is trashing it…and I really don’t understand why. Is there a certain rule that bargain games cannot be good? Must a game cost fifty bucks for it to be good? That’s what all magazine reviews seem to be leaning towards. Don’t listen to them, it’s just their opinion anyway. They’re a bunch of spoiled babies who sit there and get paid to write ridiculous reviews on games like DS. I just got the game today, wanted to check out what it was like and surprisingly I found myself playing it for 2 hours. Bottom line is that if you like Diablo, you will probably like this game. Same style, same type of dungeons, same everything. Don’t be fooled by those spoiled losers that work for these magazines who are trashing this game in their reviews. Just because it’s not made by Squaresoft doesn’t mean it cannot be fun. I’ve had more fun playing this game than I did Vagrant Story and that got great reviews. That’s the last time I’ll trust magazine reviews…it’s all opinions. Can’t lose price-wise on this one, and even if you don’t like it as much, you won’t be banging your head against the wall for buying the "editor’s choice/pick" and finding out that a supposedly bigger, more expensive game is no different graphically than the one I’m writing this review for. Here’s the rundown on the game (1 worst – 10 best)Graphics: 6 We’ve seen better graphics on playstation, but hey, this wasn’t meant to be state.
(…)This is a great little RPG. It’s definitely one of the best I’ve played, price notwithstanding. Mind you, “Darkstone” is a small, modest game that attempts to entertain you for a few hours and succeeds. One of my sisters (who normally refuses to get near RPGs), spent all day in front of the screen trying to figure this one out. According to her, she liked “Darkstone” because the fighting was more along the lines of an adventure game instead of the typical “flash to another perspective” fight screen of a RPG. Sure, it’s a bit different but it works pretty well here.Warning: don’t buy this and expect some Final Fantasy knock-off or something, though. This is far more reminiscent of the old D&D RPGs they released for the PC years ago, but with a bird’s eye perspective.I do have a couple complaints: The instruction booklet isn’t as informative as it could be, which can be frustrating if you are just starting off. Also, it takes 6 whole blocks of memory to save a game. Bleh. What’s with *that*?Other than that, this is a totally fun and addictive game for the rabid RPGer.
This game is fun. Sure the graphics aren’t great but last I checked this is an old bargain title. AAA graphics should not be expected! Story… well the story itself is the overused and simple story of good vs. evil. There’s an evil sorcerer who turned himself into a dragon and you need to stop him by going into dungeons and killing stuff and grabbing crystals to kill him eventually. But -last I checked- Dungeon crawlers were not supposed to have amazing storylines… The gameplay itself is fun. You can theoretically win the game by key mashing, but it’ll cost you a great deal of health, food, money, and mana (if you’re playing as mage/sorceress),so strategy is key. Just remember, this is a PS1 title, if you own a PS2, you’ll need a PS1 memory card… I made that mistake once…
fully enjoyed
