Ned Stark. What a badass. Sean bean plays yet another fantastic role and again shows us what a great actor he is. He is iconic with this show and I can’t get enough. I’ve turned 4 other people onto this show and we’ve turned it into a Sunday night tradition to watch it now. I originally didn’t watch the show, so I had to buy and binge watch 3 seasons once I became obsessed. Now I’m caught up and it’s never been better. If you like fantasy, medieval, storylines, then this is the show for you. The amount of characters is a little overwhelming at first but once you get through the first season you’ll find yourself choosing sides and "Houses" to back. Why are you still reading? Buy it.
Game of Thrones is HBOs television series based on George R R Martin’s series, The Song of Ice and Fire. The episodes take place on the fictional continent of Westeros, separated by the Narrow Sea. The season begins, for the most part, in Winterfell which is one of the seven kingdoms under the reign of King Robert Barrathian (current occupier of the iron throne), who resides in the capital, King’s Landing, to the south. Winterfell, the furthest north of the kingdoms, is under the command of Lord Ned Stark, the king’s most trusted friend who fought by his side when he took the iron throne. The first few episodes are focused in Winterfell so that the large cast may be introduced slowly; several story lines branch from here and run parallel through the remainder of the series, often crossing paths. Ned Stark and his wife, familiarly known as Cat, have three sons and two daughters, though Ned also has a son named Jon Snow from an affair he had during the war for the iron throne. Jon joins his uncle, Ned’s brother, in the Night’s Watch on The Wall, a barrier between the kingdoms and what lies beyond. The Wall is north of Winterfell and beyond it is a wintery wasteland occupied by “wildlings” as well as legendary zombie-like beings. The Night’s Watch serves to protect Westeros from the terrors north of The Wall.In Winterfell, the Starks soon learn of the death of Jon Arryn, the hand of the King and Lady Stark’s brother-in-law. The King and his family inform the Starks they will be.
Well, unfortunately, once started I couldn’t quit watching The Game of Thrones. I just finished watching Season Two and am looking forward to being able to purchase Season Three in February, 2014. The HBO special was so good, I also decided to purchase the Kindle version of the books. So far, the Kindle version parallels the series quite accurately, further demonstrating how faithful to the books the HBO series is. Of course, there are some relatively minor changes as would be expected, but so far nothing that dramatic. I’m not normally very much into this kind of fantasy stuff in the first place, but the acting and writing (in both the books and the series) is so outstanding that I haven’t been able to simply walk away and forget it. The only problem I have is that all my favorite characters keep getting killed off and I find myself badly wanting Joffrey’s head on a platter along with his creepy evil queen mother. That means that they are doing a great job of acting. The actual content of the DVD gets a 5 star rating, but I have knocked off a star because of the convoluted menu system used on the DVD. It is designed so that you can’t easily select a given chapter. That is completely unacceptable in this day and age when a simple chapter selection menu is the norm. Other than that, the quality of the Blu-Ray DVD is excellent. There are also several other features of this set, such as a complete guide to Westeros, an anatomy of episode six (“A Golden Crown”), a ‘makin.
This show really does live up to the accolades, I haven’t read the books but the fact that the writer is closely involved with the series and script adaption is obviously part of the reason the show is so well structured and produced. I am not usually a fan of these type of fantasy shows but what sets Game of Thrones apart is the great characters who are created to be more real, dimensional and human even though the mystical and unexplained happens they are regular humans for the most part dealing with extreme situations. Also the production and set design is incredible shooting on location in regions that evoke the performance also adds another layer something I like to see in an age where green screen performance can be a little obvious regardless of how good the actor is, there is something to be said for making the set so authentic that it inspires the performance. There are plenty of great reviews in depth here on retrolio, so all I want to say is from someone who usually finds fantasy a bore, that this has kept me wanting more at every episode!
I watched the first episode on my Roku then went out to Walmart and bought the set for Season I. It is a very good series, very complexwhat with the many kingdoms. Costumes and scenery are fabulous. Little too much graphic sex which is not necessary when a storycan hold onto plot developments. Seems to be added when there is little else to say to advance the plot. Not that I am prudish, it’sa "writer’s" choice to create moments of "pause". Those moments can be anything. More imagination could be used to emblishthe scenes and character’s lives and sex scenes could be merely suggested. To this viewer, that would be more interesting. If I were an actress, I would rather use my subtle acting skills over the rough & tumble which can be had even by bad actors. There, I said it.Let’s hope that season 2 can do better.
I’ve been a fan of fantasy and adventure for most of my life. I love comics books and movies. Growing up, Conan was one of my favorite characters to read about; in dozens of novels or in comic book form. Years later I discovered David Eddings and Robert Jordan and Terry Goodkind. But for some reason I never gave any of the Game of Throne novels a chance. So in keeping with that theme I didn’t watch the tv series. I don’t have HBO so turned a blind eye to the show. It may seem strange, but I’m glad that I didn’t watch it. Because now I am watching it and it is great.Ten episodes a season sucks, but considering the material and production costs I completely understand the reasoning behind the shortened seasons. For once in my life timing was perfect. Last night I finished watching the 3rd season and next Sunday the 4th season begins. HBO here I come. The Walking Dead ends tonight and next week season 4 takes its place. I couldn’t be happier about it. Most television is a mass grave yard. I am so happy to find another show that proves that quality productions can still be created if high standards are maintained.I only gave it 4 stars because it took a while for me to get into the show, with all the different sides represented and locals. I also don’t like the idea of being stuck with DVD’s that I will never watch. I couldn’t find a set without the useless things included.
I started episode 1 with a friend 5 years ago but it had way too much nudity so we didn’t want to watch it. After hearing that everyone else said they started to cut that back after the first season and that the story line was worth it to try and ignore the sexual stuff I decided to watch it. Definitely loving some of the characters and hating the other ones but the story line is fantastic and I can’t wait to watch more! I love all things fantasy so seeing that there are dragons, trolls, etc has me hooked!
Pretty much saying the same thing for all my GOT Blue-Ray purchases….having the Blue-ray for the series and watching all of the extra content truly make getting GOT worth it. The special features and behind the scene features add much more to your viewing experience and deeper understanding of what the directors/showrunners were trying to do. I always seem to appreciate the shows more after understanding all the work, thought, and emotions that many different people put in to create this one fantastic show. The audio commentary too are also fantastic to listen too.The DVD and Digital copies are also a very nice addition to this package. I am able to give my parents the DVD, which to this point still has Chinese subtitles, so they can understand the show even better. The digital copies are nice to have so I can bring it anywhere!
QUITE SIMPLY REDEFINES QUALITY TV….APPEALS TO ALL AUDIENCES EXCEPT FOR THOSE OFFENDED BY GORE AND TORTURE, WHICH IS SUGGESTED MORE THAN SHOWN, BUT OFTEN THAT MAKES IT SEEM MORE DEPLORABLE…OTHER THAN THAT PROVISO, WITHOUT QUESTION THE BEST SCRIPT/CASTING/SETS/DETAIL/HUMOR/ACTING/LEVEL OF SOPHISTICATION/ORIGINALITY ETC ETC…FOR HISTORIANS OF BRITANNIA, THE PARALLELS ARE VERY INTERESTING…I AM STARTING TO READ THE BOOKS AND I BELIEVE THE SCREEN WRITERS ARE BETTER THAN MARTIN’S WRITING, ALTHOUGH NO ONE CAN BEAT MARTIN’S IMAGINATION AND HUMOR AND SOPHISTICATION WEAVED ALL THROUGH THE STORY.
The shop povided this item in excellent condition and in a timely fashion. It was a Christmas gift. As far as a review of the Game Of Thrones season 1 all I can say is where have you been for 8 years my friend. This is one of the most fantastic and engaging series to ever be put on television. Thanks HBO. Season 1 introduced the Stark family and other primary families and characters. The other 7 seasons build upon what happened to the Stark family and other characters that become part of the adventure. I would recommend that you watch the first season, and that should make you a fan.
