This has been one of my favorite albums for many years. I finally had to get the disc. I had forgotten how incredible Pink Floyd sounds on headphones until I listened to this album again. I can see how many people might not properly appreciate the studio disc but I have to say that I bought this album the first time, and this time too, for "Several Species of small furry animals…" It has to be experienced. Music, for me, takes my mind off the present and takes me on a tour of the mind or soul of the artist(s) and this disc excels at that task. I could never limit myself to one Pink Floyd album but if I could only have two, it would be this and "Animals"

Some of this can be hard to listen to but if you can get a good price on it, it may be worth the cost just for Grantchester Meadows and Several Species… alone. For some of the other stuff you probably have to be a fan but you can see where they came from. I don’t remember any of the Syd Barrett tunes from before Gilmour but I think Barrett is credited on Astronomy Domine do you get an idea of what he was about. I guess it gets down to listening to what you like–I like it!
The fact it is one of Pink Floyds ever lasting presence albums gives credibility to it’s individuality!!
This is a very early blue print of the band’s more well-known hits that would come later as the result of Ummagumma being the start of Pink Floyd’s experimental phase that would continue on with Atom-Heart Mother (1970) and Meddle (1971). Here the band began early experimenting to test their own music individually shown by the second disc of Ummagumma to see where it stood alone as compared to playing together with each member having their own signature compositions. Of these compositions by each band member the ones that made the album so strong musically to me were Rick’s Sysyphus pts 1-4, Roger’s Grandchester Meadows, Dave’s The Narrow Way pt 3, and Nick’s The Grand Vizier’s Garden Party pt 2: Entertainment. The live album the comprises the first disc of Ummagumma is also very beautifully sounding with the haunting screams on the live version of Careful With That Axe, Eugene and the live version of Astronomy Domine which is almost identical to the original version that appeared on the band’s 1967 debut album The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn While Syd Barrett was the principal singer and song writer for the floyd. All in all I would say Ummagumma is a must have and important album to own by any Pink Floyd fan because it not only has very lovely and unique music on it but it also was the early experimentation where the band saw what worked and what didn’t and would later lead to more experimentations in the early 70’s that would eventually spawn and evolve into masterpieces su.
I like the group Pink Floyd and requested this CD as a christmas gift and my girlfriend found it on retrolio and ordered it for me.
