I will go on record as saying that Chromehounds is THE BEST game of all Time…In my opinion as well as others I play online with, say the very same thing…This game is splashed all over youtube and Sega forums for all to see and enjoy…I am hoping for a sequel to come out soon! Buy this game and you’ll enjoy every bit of it as I have for almost three years now!!! You Mechwarrior fans will definately enjoy this game because of the sound affects and visual weapon affects as well as hound builds and the enormous amount customizations of hound building…! It’s absolutely a wonderful game and have been recommending it since June of 2006…!Enjoy…!
This game WAS very good however there is really no point in reviewing it anymore since the online servers have been shutdown. Truly a sad fate for such a fun game. The single player is the only thing you can do in the game now, and to be honest it blows. It’s boring and dull. There are many missions however the story is bland and you can only build with the parts the game gives you. In the multiplayer you had access to many parts and it made it incredibly fun to customize your hound. I dont recommend a purchase unless you really want the single player. However, I recommend against it.
I remember the day I got Chromehounds (when I first got an xbox 360)! I had no idea what I was in for, because to be honest this game became my personal favorite. The whole clan cooperation, mech complexity, rankings and different regions you could permeate through made this game an amazing group experience! I can recall off the top of my head the amount of close friends I made just joining a clan or two Of course there were a few flaws or glitches that went uncorrected, however the game was still a blast! I heard they’ve restricted most of the things you could do a few years ago on this game (and I wouldn’t be surprised, because to run large gaming servers requires money, which I doubt is generated much when you can buy this for $1.00). I guess it was fun while it lasted; in my opinion they should definitely make a Chromehounds 2! I’d be the first to buy it.
my 12 year old son loved it.
love how many people are hating on this game for having its servers shut down way back in 2010, saying the game is "unplayable" or its really only just a "demo". the game still works fine, yes there is no more multiplayer and, the campaign is more or less a tutorial but, its a 10+ hour tutorial that spans 6 mini stories with 6 mission each + a mini tutorial for each so basically 7 missions per each story line. you can still customize your mech "with well over 100+ parts unlocked from playing the story. don’t seem so "unplayable" and very "demo" like now eh? or maybe I just like this game because its a giant smashy robot game that’s fun to play and, still looks good doing it….. I guess I’m just a weirdo then
Alright, you want to know what chromehounds is? It is a game for gear heads and patient people, and fans of the mechwarrior style genre to bask in its solid gameplay, excellent graphics, and astounding amounts of customization. And thats not even including xbox live. Now, lets start off with the Gameplay. Its simple, and to teh point. There is no stupid menus you have to use to pick an attack. There is a menu to issue commands, but only commanders can use it, and even then, its not necessary unless in campaign.Right bumper changes weapons, right trigger fires, the analog stick control movement, and the right thumstick clicks in to give you a first person view that wobbles realistically with the terrain and movements. other than that, there isnt much you need to know, unless surfing through the game menus like the garage or mission selection (out of gameplay).Onto graphics, now, and be prepared, because they are excellent. The game is normal mapped, which means geometry isnt very complex, which also, while some games are hampered by this, makes chromehounds even better. Because of the hardedged style most mechs are built in, it makes it look more realistic, and also adds a surreal beauty to the buildings, especially in the urban maps like Xerxes, because they can do much more with lighting and texturing. Note also, that I think the particle effects, while on occasion seem a bit redundant, are probably unrivaled on the Xbox 360. Even GRAW’s notably spectacular explosions cant st.
The online play is fantastic, you participate in an online war that changes whether you’re online or not. Partake in missions to turn the tide in your favor, or just to earn some credits for that brand new part. This is made from the same people as Armored Core and you will notice a large influence from that game, though it is all land based so no flying around and shooting newbs who don’t know how to look up yet. (If they released an armored core game in this same format I would give my left nu…kidney for it by the way.)Single player is almost just a preliminary stage to the online play, which I feel the game was designed for almost exclusively with the offline play being an afterthought. I know that isn’t the case, but it’s the best way to describe it. You basically pick your class of mech and do the missions they require of you. The better your score, which ranges from D, C, B, A, and S I believe, then the better your reward. If you get an A or S you generally receive an extra part as well.Online is where you see how extremely fun the game is. I feel it’s balanced as no one type of mech is undefeatable, although obviously the veteran players will have much improved versions over your weaponry I still found I was able to get a good amount of kills in and not feel useless or anything. If you really want to make people regret picking on the new guy use heat weapons as most people build their defense against shell weapons, etc.Strategy is important as there is no radar in thi.
To start out, I was pretty excited to get this game and couldn’t wait to play. At first the environment and the build up was getting me ready to play. It has a great storyline, although it would be cooler if it were a little closer with real geography than fake areas. The game has great ideas, and its a blast to play. The one thing you got to remember is there is never really a perfect game. Several people have ideas on what would make the game better. The one thing we got to hope is that they come out with a expansion or downloads to make the game eventually a even better game. The controls were very easy, but at times you have brain farts in the heat of battle and instead of switching weapons you drop the map down. The good thing is that everything is quick so even the slightest mistakes you can regain control in seconds. The multiple selections of everything from cannons to mine detectors there are endless variations of hounds. There are little problems but they are easily fixable. For an example there was a level that three hounds were getting in front of each other shooting the one in front killing each other (dumb AI). But I gave a little nudge to the guy in front and pushed him over and everything was fine.I haven’t played too much online yet, I am doing what was recommended and play story mode first and gain as much parts and then compete against the others. To sum it up, the game is fun if you have the creativity and like to blow things up.
Ok, don’t buy this game if you do not play online. The story mode is the worst part of the game and only takes about 8 hours to complete, if that. The story mode is still important as it gives you free parts to make your mech for online play. However the war is where its at. Not only can you setup ranked battles against other players, but you can also setup battles with your friends against the CPU all in the name of your nation. Levels take a long time to come by, and it feels like you’ve accomplished something when you get them. Rising your clan to the top makes you feel great to. Servers update every hour letting you know the goings on in the world, and teams and players get special recognition for great achievement (and for donating 10 million to their nation, which is also an achievement). To participate in the war, you must be part of a clan, and all members of your clan must be the same nationality. At the end of the war your squad can switch affiliations, to get all the best parts each side has to offer. Great online game, great gameplay and strategy. A must have for any online gamer.
Good Mecha games!
