I am a subscriber to both youtubers and when I saw they made this, I marathoned it instantly. They both speak the language fluently so they have a natural experience when interacting with locals which is much better than a foreigner traveling and having someone explain and translate everything to them and us, the viewer.Highly recommend this to anyone interested in anything related to travel, China, road trips, traveling abroad. Can’t wait for Conquering Northern China!
This is a perfect way to see mainland China like I’ve never seen it before plus the exotic foods and delicacies they have there.
It’s a very interesting view off the beaten path of southern china. It’s a "low budget" production but that doesn’t detract from the quality. What this documentary lacks in production quality it makes up for in the sheer determination and fearlessness of the hosts. It’s a very enjoyable watch. One constructive criticism that could make it slightly better is if rather than show the map and path traveled at the beginning of the episode, they could have slotted it in throughout the episode as transition pieces to help us better understand the geography of China and where exactly they are in relation to the other provinces. Might be helpful for people completely ignorant of the provinces of China.
i surprisingly good unfiltered look at the life in southern china. its an indie production. you can tell. but the content vastly out shines any deficit that could cause.
Great Stuff. Rather uplifting and hopeful. I would give it 6 stars if there was more description on each episode. These guys love China, but still manage to give you the unvarnished truth about the things that disturb and upset them. They are kind without giving any lip service to the social and political BS that is present in any country. Educational, entertaining, insightful.
I started out as a Youtube watcher of SerpentZA. I watched almost all the videos on his channel from the past 2 years before watching this. I really like the different pace in the documentary compared to the Youtube videos. It took me a little while to get adjusted. The quality of the video and audio is way better than the Youtube content. The Youtube content is already great, so this documentary is superb compared to the ADVChina/SerpentZA Youtube videos. The visuals are amazing as well. You can’t expect content like the Youtube channel. You can expect content like a real movie here. I think I will start to check out CMilks Youtube after this. I would highly recommend anyone who watches the documentary, also check out Winston’s Youtube channel. Its great. This Documentary was also seriously amazing! Just as good of quality as a VICE documentary or anything of the sort.
I love it . A few more hours would be great . I have learned so much about China from you two guys . Watch with an open mind and you will have a blast . Keep up the great work .
Thank you for such a great adventure visiting the areas of southern China. I love the format that was chosen to tell your story. A very long time ago, I shot and edited video and that gives me a really great appreciate for the amount of work that was involved in producing this movie. I enjoy watching you showing "how it really is in China". I subscribe to both of your Youtube channels. I wish both of you much success in the future.STAY AWESOME!!!
I’m so glad that this got picked up by retrolio Prime! I’ve been following ADVChina (and serpentza and laowhy) for a while now, and really wanted to see this documentary. Can’t wait for Conquering Northern China, I’m sure it’s going to be AWESOME!Thanks guys!
I’m familiar with the 2 main presenters in this series from their various YouTube projects, so I was quite excited to check out their first foray into actual film making with Conquering Southern China. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this, though their YouTube uploads are generally pretty well maid, professional, and are very watchable. Each character has their own charm, and together there’s clearly a chemistry between them that lets you know that these two weren’t just paired up by some production company for this series, much like you get when larger companies, like cable networks try to do something similar. Their adventures are fun, with a subtle, but refreshing level of commitment comedy mixed in, and it doesn’t feel forced, or intetional. There’s always a risk when 2 "foreigners" go exploring a country that they will try to pander to a very simple Western audience, which typically results in cringy behavior, and embarrassing "bullying" of the locals and the over simplification of local culture, and even jokes made at their locals expense capitalizing on the language barrier, which is, in my opinion, a cheap shot, unimaginative, low-hanging fruit.. but not in their series! That may be because the two English speaking, rosey faced westerners we see here are intact, not, foreigners! They both have what I would call an extensive history and personal connection with China, and they have actually both set down roots there and in fact have families the.
