Much to my wife’s chagrin, I bought this game. See, she called herself a Borderlands widow when the first one came out in 2009. The first game was super addictive, and unfortunately for her, so is this iteration.Borderlands is a FPS/RPG that relies heavily on online co-op play. You do not have to play online with other people, but it will definitely make it a better experience. Borderlands has a great community so if you’re looking for someone to play with you shouldn’t have any problem finding somebody.Graphically the game is cel-shaded. The sound is quite nice. However the main draw is the writing. This is a very humorous game; though be warned it is rated M for Mature! Kids under 16 shouldn’t be playing as there is a ton of innuendo and language. That said, if you’re wrong in the head like I am, you’ll laugh tons. One of the biggest draws to the game is the random gun generator. The maker advertised jazillions of guns, and with my time played being measured in weeks, I’ve yet to see the same gun twice. There are four different classes that ship with the game, each with it’s own powers. There is a fifth class but it’s DLC. Playing in a group it’s good to have different classes as they work together very well.If you like RPG’s and whimsical FPS’s, buy this game.
Great for Couch Co-op ! With all gaming consoles actively working to kill couch co-op so they can sell twice as many consoles and games, I am looking back to X360 games for future fun. I came across this game late one night while searching for a new shooter for the wife, our son, and I to enjoy. This game has a look of a drawn comic book while being set in a dystopian Mad Max (the good one with Mel Gibson) style wasteland. One part I especially found unique and interesting is how the game mirrors a D&D or Champions of Norrath style as you have a mage, bezerker, stealthy burglar type, and the knight class character. My Lady and I really enjoy leveling up to unlock new talents / capabilities and so we can use better armor, shields, and firearms that require your character to be a specific level.
I was a HUGE fan of the original Borderlands…myself and my best buddy went through the campaign 2+ times and conquered all the DLC packs multiple times in our quest to shoot, loot, and get achievements. We loved the variety of games, environments, along with the ridiculous enemies and other characters we ran into along the way.Needless to say, Borderlands 2 was one of our most anticipated games in the months before it was released. We were super excited to hit some co-op FPS action together again. When BL2 dropped, we immediately picked it up and were into it for a couple weeks. Everything about the game, on paper, was a step above the first game. More guns, more loot, more enemies, more tasks, etc. However, after playing it for a few weeks, we tired of it pretty quickly. I’m not sure if it’s because we burned ourselves on the first game, but the gameplay just seemed to get repetitive. Alot of the stronger bosses in the game relied on getting super rare items rather than skill and teamwork (like the Crawmerax in BL1). We bought the season pass for the game, but haven’t even downloaded all the packs, which is quite a bummer.I can’t say that BL2 isn’t a good game…it is…it’s actually a great FPS with tight-controls and is a lot of fun to play with friends. For some reason though, I just couldn’t get into this one like I did with Borderlands 1. It doesn’t seem to have the same lasting-appeal and the gameplay can get stale after you’ve done a bunch of enter-the-area.
There’s many great, complete reviews out there, so I won’t go to length to describe what makes this game great. It is almost the perfect sequel, but there’s too much stupid humor thrown in that constantly barrages you for the duration of the game. The one thing that keeps me from giving this game 5 stars is the humor. I understand that most players are teen boys, but not everyone enjoys this immature humor that stoops to almost insulting levels. So much of it relies on outdated or soon to be outdated memes. I found the original game’s humor clever, but Borderlands 2 goes too far. I don’t enjoy that every toilet says "no fapping". So many of the callouts and cutscene dialogue feels so terribly forced and lame. Bonerfarts? REALLY?! Lowbrow humor is okay, but poorly executed lowbrow humor that bombards you for the entirety of the game is awful and tasteless.Turning off player callouts helped some, but I think this game would have been SO much better and less annoying if they had just toned it down a little bit. Each joke would have been much funnier in more moderation.
If you’re a gamer, then you probably wouldn’t be reading this. You would have already seen Giantbomb’s QL and the plethora of positive reviews that you can simply find on your favorite gaming blog or Metacritic. Now if you’re a parent or a relatively new gamer trying to find out if this is something your kid or yourself would enjoy, then I’ll try to provide some helpful information.1. Did your kid or you own and play Borderlands 1? Yes? Purchase Borderlands 2.2. No? Didn’t own or play B1? That’s fine. B2 is infinitely better and more engaging. If you like to shoot stuff with fun and seemingly infinite variety of weapons, then hurry up and get this.3. If you don’t like collecting loot, if you don’t like menu management/item management, then stay away from the game. There is a ton of loot and menu management. As much as reviews have mentioned that it’s a game meant for cooperative online play, I am enjoying it just as much on single player.Fun game, definitely recommended.
I won’t touch on what users say about the game. I’m sure that’s been covered to death. Suffice to say, I enjoyed the game immensely. The gameplay is spot on, and it plays even better when you’re playing multiplayer. My brother and I play together just about every weekend and after two months, we still haven’t finished all the content with all the DLCs. The story does a great job of establishing a sense of urgency that keeps you interested, and there are more than enough side quests to keep you going for a long time. The only things bad I have to say about the game have nothing to do with the gameplay itself. Without spoiling too much about the game, I will say this –there are some points in the game where I think a well done cut scene would have made it perfect. Most of the cut scenes done in the game are not very well done, and sparse on emotional engagement. I know they’re trying to keep the game off kilter and darkly comedic, but those two key scenes really need a cinematic that matches the epicness of the game. Those who play the game will know what I’m talking about. There is one other thing that I want to complain about with regards to the story of the game, but there’s no way to complain about it without giving away major spoilers, so I’ll just silently gnash my teeth.
Alright, in the first few moments of this game, you are treated to a theme song by the heavy, witness an action packed train wreck, and meet pandora’s most famous robot. Borderlands 2 is an action packed, super violent, long, hilarious, and just downright screwed up first person shooter/RPG. Known for its large amount of weaponry and addictive co op gameplay. The story centers around one to four (depending on how many players you have.) “vault hunters” as they are called, trying to thwart the maniacal schemings of one of the greatest villains of all time, handsome jack. Jack, who is the CEO of the intergalactic corporation, Hyperion, is trying to awaken a great evil hidden on pandora for millions of years. The overall story, while stereotypical, is one of the smartest I’ve ever seen. With an unbelievable blend of serious, thought provoking questions, to goofy, tung in cheek, blow the bad guys head off comedy. Jack however, is just one of the many eccentric characters you’ll meet on your journey. Such as the cold hearted arms dealer Marcus, or the super sexy bartender mad moxxi, or the iconic redneck mechanic scooter. There are also a lot of playable characters as well. Four original characters, and two add on characters. There’s Axton the versatile commando, maya the phase walking siren, Salvador, the badass gunzerker, and zer0 the mysterious space ninja assassin. (See what I mean about tung in cheek?) each class has their own special abilities like in the first game, such a.
Having not played the original “Borderlands”, even though I have friends who spoke highly of it, my expections were not real high, but they were above average expectations. This game blew them away.STORYThe story is simple, to kill Jack, period. But to expound a little, this part of the game is what makes the game. The story is filled with crazy missions, some optional, that mix crude humor and language that entertain the heck out of you. More than once you will laugh out loud, guaranteed. Smart, funny, entertaining, and well written. Exactly how I imagine the team pictured it would turn out to be.GAME PLAYI really have enjoyed this game. Borderlands 2 (BL2) features four hero types, and another being added as DLC, with each type having three seperate skill trees that can be mixed and matached according to your liking or used by adding skills within that skill tree only. Each character, at the moment, can be leveled up to 50. Per your normal FPS RPG games, XP and goodies are earned through comleteing objectives and blasting through loads of unigue enemies. “Gun” is a very loose term used in this game, b/c the “Guns” (SMG, Assault, Pistol, Sniper, Shotgun & Rocketlauncher) are many times unlike any Gun that you are used to. Each gun has a manufacture type that has unique attributes. As you’d expect each gun has damage, accuracy, firerate, reload speed, and magazine size to compare, and also add 4 types of elemental damage (Fire, Electric, Corrosive, & Slag) that might be added.
Before I begin, let me lay out my gaming habits prior to BL2: Halo 2, Halo 3, Gears of War 2, Halo: Reach, Gears of War 3, and Halo 4. In all cases, I would be playing 95% online competitive multiplayer and I usually skip campaigns entirely. I just don’t find them particularly compelling. But, I was looking for a good, cheap, co-op campaign to play with friends when we didn’t feel like playing online matchmaking. BL2 became much more than a distraction, though, and is something we have been playing for a good year. Soon I will have completed the campaign for the 6th time, 3 times with two characters. The characters available to play with have varied and relatively well-balanced skills/special abilities and can work especially well when varied in teams. Strategies really do change with characters, so even though I have played with two characters, my approach to situations in the game is very different depending on my character. For example, the Gunzerker has the ability to dual wield weapons (including while bleeding out), boost life regen, throw two grenades, increase damage/accuracy, etc. He’s great for dealing fast damage, saving yourself from death (if you kill someone while bleeding out, you are alive again), distracting enemies from other players, etc. The Mechromancer deploys a killer robot that, among other things, can restore shields, melee attack enemies, shoot lasers, shoot balls of energy, etc. The robot is great for distracting enemies from everyone, helping out tea.
I whole heartedly recommend this game. It was exdeedingly fun and exudes charm at every turn. The only real complaint I can make is that I actually got tired of playing it. That is not to say is has no replay value. It does, in spades! I got my first character (gunzerker) up to level 50 – the max on initial release – and then proceeded to play the other 3 characters to get all achievements. After that I needed a break. Will definitely return to it once DLC goes on sale. The online co-op is loads of fun also. Great game made with top notch production values. Pick it up today!
