Excellent book! The only thing about it that bothered me was the mention of magic coming into play. It kind of ruined the fact that her Dad was a preacher.
I love this. I read it as a read aloud to my 2nd graders and they were so into it!
Great gift for my ganddaughter! Good message! Nice quality book!
My daughter loved the book and the hardcover was a nice touch with the signature. I highly recommend.
This is the story of a lonely little girl named India Opal who just moved to a new town. She meets a very special stray dog in the local grocery store and from that first friendship, other friendships are forged throughout the rest of the story, leaving Opal much happier and much less lonely. A very sweet story and in the author’s own words it’s “a hymn of praise to dogs, friendship, and the South.” I think that sums up the story very well.I enjoyed this book more than some of DiCamillo’s other books, such as “The Magician’s Elephant.” It may be because of the first-person point of view in Winn-Dixie as compared to the third-person pov in her other stories; while good ideas behind her other books, this one felt much more personal and sincere. This is a very quick read – in the first sitting (maybe a half hour at the most) I got to page 50 (out of 182 pages). I think that children will love this book (as long as they don’t dislike dogs) because of the easy read and the touching story. It’s very relatable; who hasn’t felt alone and left-out when they have moved to a new town or state?
Can you imagine picking up a dog at the grocery store? In the book Because of Winn Dixie by Kate Dicamillo, Opal, one of the characters, went to the grocery store and came home with a dog! I would give this book a rating of 5/5 because it has interesting dialogue. The author uses words like pathological to describe the fear of thunderstorms that Winn Dixie, the dog in the book has. Have you ever read a book with so much dialogue? I think the author is a good author because she uses interesting descriptions in the book. My favorite part of the book was when Winn Dixie wagged his tail and knocked all the onions off the shelf.
Happy with the purchased, timely delivery and brand new book just as advertised.
The story line is simple…. But don’t stop there. Keep thinking and this story will connect and give you lots to ponder
Wonderful children’s story that shows kindness a true gift in making friends. My nephew was listening to it for his school work and I was hooked.
Really cute book about a young girl coming of age, with the adult message of "our past does not define our present or our future" AND sometimes bad things happen, but "not what we wished for" can be OK after all. Only complaint is that it ends quite abruptly.
