Although it’s frustratingly hard when you get to the Grand Slam semi-finals, it is fun and keeps you continually trying to improve your game. This is not the old arcade game where you just press a few buttons. There is a lot, A LOT of timing involved in the game-play. Overall, this game was great buy. It can be a fun and light play or it can be challenging in career mode. We have not been able to play online possibly due to no one playing online anymore.
Excellent
UPDATE: since the arrival of Grand Slam Tennis 2 – Top Spin 4 has elevated to the top even more so. What GST2 makes you realize is just how accurate and nuanced TS4 is. If you are trying to decide what tennis game is for you, look no further than TS4, especially if you are a tennis player. The game is captured ALMOST perfectly, lovely courts, sounds, details, etc, and for those looking for a REWARDING game, TS4 has a steep learning curve that only makes the game better with time and age well. Still the best choice. And lets face it, if a tennis video game had you hitting errors that reflect real life, NO ONE would play the game, so keeping the ball generally in versus out is favorable. TS4 has a nice balance, if you are late on your backswing, late to a ball, hit a harder “get” etc, it will be an error or a BAD shot resulting in the opponent hitting a winner. Pretty much, TS4 keeps the tennis going when you cant get on a real court. And, you wont see any player hitting make believe shots like Nadal w/1 handed topspin backhand, or playing Serve/Volley like a master, or fake tennis shots etc. Stick to TS4.best tennis game out. hands down. problem is, the game ships with a crap instruction book and many elements of the game you will have to discover and uncover as you hit as many balls as possible. the game does not come out and tell you that, for instance, you can use the buttons for a power serve, yet if you serve by buttons, the speed of the balls will be on average about 10-.
The problem with this game is that you cannot really make your tennis player the perfect tennis player as you cannot choose your attributes and you have to choose a style for your tennis player, however overall it is the most realistic tennis game that you will find and requires great skill on higher difficulties. It is not just hit the ball and it is hit hard, but you have to know when to time the hit and it comes with playing the game on a more consistent basis. Also, don’t use the playstation move with this as you will probably break a few games so just use your controller and don’t use the move for this game where you would likely break something.
I thought I was so good at this game and played it a lot. I was attacking the serve with aggressive slices followed by a put away, but this was all before I put it on hard setting. I got so damn frustrated, they don’t miss and you HAVE to hit a perfectly timed shot. This game definitely has re-playability. I also created a player and let my wife play with Nadal. I didn’t use any power shots, just tapped the buttons and she was able to take a few games off of me. Keep in mind, she has little tennis knowledge and was just moving an object near the ball and pushing a button without aiming. So, if you’re looking for a game to play with your spouse or friend that doesn’t know much about tennis and isn’t good at games, you can make this handicap and it’s very competitive for us.pros:decently fluid controltiming is hardalways room to growcons:i hate playing nadal….
my fave game, thanks a lot
Being a huge tennis fan and relatively new to gaming, I was thrilled to get this game. The Playstation Move implementation isn’t great and requires a button press to hit various shots (e.g. you swing but press the PS move button for a slice instead of just swinging the racket in a nice smooth high-to-low slice push motion.) But the gameplay with the dualshock is great! It gives you a whole array of shot selection including flat, slice, topspin and lobs. You can also hit a nicely controlled shot vs. an all-out power smash. The graphics are stellar and on-par with other great sports games like MLB The Show (almost.)Big win if you’re a tennis fan.I will get Virtua Tennis 4. But for now, this game is awesome.
I love tennis and tennis games and I’d have to say this is the best tennis game I’ve ever played. There’s a lot of skill involved with timing your shots and knowing which shots to pick to your advantage. Going for broke while at a disadvantage or making a bad swing will end up with you losing the point. Great game to play with others. The only flaw is the CPU which feels like it’s cheating most of the time. Not too big of a problem for me as I usually play with friends, but people looking for a single player experience should be wary of the frustrating A.I.
This is the most realistic simulation of tennis I’ve ever played. Yes, there are still many flaws, but it appears to appreciate the physics of tennis better than any company before. While incredibly addictive, there is a steep learning cure and can be quite frustrating learning the timing. Online play is the most exciting and challenging, not surprisingly. Hoping for a TopSpin 5 as they do have a great amount of room for improvement on this installment.
havnt finished the game but im having fun…. played top spin 3 and as you progressed you could be in a rut and restart couse you wernt fast enough or something… top spin 4 has been fun- as you level up you chose 1 of the 3 playing types offense defense etc and you get your stats uped based on your way of play and it works fine. just keep moving your player back to the center of the court if a game creater were to view this and try to do this suggestion i think sport games could be more fun— they could create a storyline from someone going into college or of high school who has shown some skill hear about a local competition so he goes then wins it…and he slowly goes around the country challenging some people on a team then when hes able he goes into the pro level games and courts of the world this would be a fun expanded way to play and enjoy a story based sport
