I bought this Blu-ray on a whim, having never seen this movie before. It was cheap and it looked interesting and I remember glancing at it when it came out back in 2006, but something else must have captured my attention at the time, for I never watched it.. Think of Ocean’s Eleven meets Goodfellas. Interesting, Not exactly filled with substance, but the scattershot storyline keeps you watching. Vegas magician Buddy "Aces" Israel dabbles in the Mafia with the illusion that he wants to be a gangster. Only, he proceeds to enrage the wrong people, and ultimately starts to dabble in the arena of Stool Pigeon as he starts to talk to the FBI. The mafia decides to put a hit on him and with a hefty pricetag for the deed, draws the attention of a host of would-be killers as the FBI tries to quickly take him into protective custody. Fun, right? What ensues is topsy-turvy chaos punctuated by lots of flying bullets and spattering blood. The cast is filled with stars. The plot has a few twists here and there. Overall, Smokin’ Aces isn’t Goodfellas. What it is slam-bam-thank-you-ma’am entertainment. Pure and simple. A nice little watch when you need to unhook and unwind. Don’t look too deep. Don’t try to peel back the outer skin and search for meaning and innuendo. Just enjoy it for what it is. A violent romp of sex and drugs and splashy gunplay.Dig it!
Great movie
This review is more or less about the quality of the video. I enjoyed the movie, but I’ll leave that up to other people to duke it out. I have a decent stack of HD DVDs and I’d say more than half don’t strike me as particularly “HD” as I’d like. I feel like a DVD upscaled would look close to the same. However, they must have used a better master copy, compressed it better… I don’t know what, but I popped this movie in and immediately was saying “holy crap! Now, that’s HD!”. It looked so unbelievably crisp, that there was a night and day difference between it and the DVD. Want to prove it? Flip the disc over and watch that side. Highly recommended if you just want to impress your friends. If you like the movie, then I suppose that’s a bonus too.
In real life a person will never see this many rounds fired in a single sitting. OK! ALL RIGHT! If in September 2009, you were among the spectators watching or the police battling armor wearing bank robbers in North Hollywood then you were close. Other wise my first sentence stands. Regardless of personal experience this movie has some wonderful and authentic brutality. Lots and lots of gun play. Many bleeding body parts through out the picture. Funny dialogue and angst galore. Watch for the Karate Kid on Ritalin as he responds to his own violent nature. Worth collecting and seeing more than once in a life time.
This movie is awesome and the cast is from well known actors to up and coming ones as well.****The only thing is that the code for the digital version is expired as of 2012 however I am in contact with Universal customer service via email and hopefully they can give me a updated code for the digital version. I will update whether or not if I get one.
Happy
I love this movie. As far as action comedies go, the casting is perfect, the action is madcap, and the plot is just sensible enough to be almost believable. Ryan Reynolds hits a lot of the right notes as the hero of the story and Jeremy Piven is perfect as an almost meta-version of himself. If you’re looking for an action movie that will bring a few surprises along with some great shoot-em-up style sequences, this is a great place to start.
This movie has a lot of good points. The story, while silly at times, is overall pretty good. Personally, I always love stories with several different parties/factions all converging on the same goal or what-have-you, and then having it out with one another; and that’s the basic idea of how “Smokin’ Aces” plays out. Chaos ensues, and it’s a lot of fun. Many critics have noted (unfavorably) that the movie often shifts between comic and serious tones quite suddenly, but I thought that sort of added to its charm. I even cried a little, like some kind of dummy, while watching a particular scene with Taraji Henson. The characters are diverse and interesting, and the actors portraying them do very well. Vets like Ray Liotta and Andy Garcia are solid, of course, and there are surprising performances from Ryan Reynolds and Alicia Keys and the aforementioned Taraji Henson, plus a hilarious bit part played by Jason Bateman. The score is also atmospheric and memorable. But the ending is really pretty weak. Forgivable, but just sort of… meh. It’s kind of a big twist, but it’s one of those big “game-changer” twists, which ultimately feels a bit tacked-on, despite the fact that it’s built up through the entire film. Weird. My big gripe, though, is specifically about this DVD. The extras and commentaries are solid, but the actual movie is in fake widescreen — cropped. Considering how heavily the film was advertised when it was released, I assumed the DVD would be of higher qua.
always a fun movie to watch. blu ray just makes it all the more exciting.
Great action packed crazy movie. I’ve watched it a couple times, so many A list actors in this movie, great movie
