GREAT book! well-written and full of practical advice. My mentor, who himself wrote 2 widely-read books on enterprise ability, recommended that I read “Unlocking Agility”, and I’m so glad he did! Definitely a worthy addition to the discerning enterprise agile coach’s library
Agility and large enterprises seem to be in conflict; few of us have been lucky enough to work in an organization with the resources that large corporations enjoy but experienced the agility that is necessary today. This author does a wonderful job of showing us, with examples, how any organization can become more agile and therefore, much better. How many times have we looked at an organization that is struggling and realized they didn’t react when they had the opportunity? Often it’s because they don’t know how to accomplish the change that’s needed – they’re too large. Now there’s no excuse for that. This is a wonderful book that everyone who works for a living (that’s most of us) should read.
The most thorough coverage of agile transformation IĆ¢ā¬ā¢ve ever seen. This book is a bible for any change agent involved in agile transformation
The best of the best.Just five years ago I heard about agility for the first time and the topic immediately captivated me. With 25 years in Learning and Development business in the broadest sense (from training, executive coaching and leadership development), I immediately saw two areas where I could use my experience with the human side of agile and Agile transformation outside IT-business.I have almost resigned from the first one because this business was soon occupied by former SW developers, Scrum masters, Agile Coaches who had seen people management and leadership development as an opportunity for a new career.Surprisingly, the agile community better accepted Ć¢ā¬ÅScrum masters turned into soft skill/leadership development specialistsĆ¢ā¬Ā such as me, i.e. a Ć¢ā¬ÅSoft skill/leadership development specialist turned into a well-informed consultant about agility issuesĆ¢ā¬Ā. No matter that technicians working in Learning and Development fields have invented a wheel not once, not twice, but almost always when they must solve the human side of agile. I have realised that the agile community has been living within their unique ivory tower. So, I turned my focus on Agile transformation outside IT-business. I was not happy after reading some highly acclaimed books, e.g. L. Holbeche’s The Agile Organisation, N. Perkin’s Agile Transformation or books by prolific author S. Denning. Interesting reading, which was of low added value for me as I needed something which put together all aspects of agi.
This is the one book that I recommend to everyone who asks me what to read about Agile. It is a simultaneously broad and deep overview of Agile. Whether you’re an executive, a developer, or somewhere in between, this is *the* book to read. It’s so complete that I’m considering using it as the textbook for my university course on Agile. Thanks, Jorgen, for the great book!
YouĆ¢ā¬ā¢ll want this book to read, and to keep close to your desk, if youĆ¢ā¬ā¢re interested high performance workplaces. The big aspiration of the book, which the author delivers on, is to show how to grow and sustain agility in an entire enterprise, and to thrive amidst constant change. But the bookĆ¢ā¬ā¢s journey starts from the ground up, and youĆ¢ā¬ā¢ll get usable information at each step.Even if your current goal involves only a smaller organization or just one team Ć¢ā¬ā regardless of whether youĆ¢ā¬ā¢ve had experience with Scrum or Kanban or are just starting out Ć¢ā¬ā youĆ¢ā¬ā¢ll learn from Unlocking Agility. He provides the historical background for the emergence of the agile movement and illustrates the practices across the spectrum of lean, agile, XP, Scrum and Kanban. And he guides you through all the aspects of implementing the transformation from the ground up.Then finally, you arrive at the enterprise level. F. Scott Fitzgerald famously said: Ć¢ā¬ÅThe test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.Ć¢ā¬Ā The author deals with the tension in large enterprises that must simultaneously deliver goods and services efficiently in a highly competitive market while also creating the innovations that may indeed disrupt their existing businesses. He shows how to think about, allocate resources, and choose management schemes to deal with the dichotomy between efficiency and innovation. The book works well because the wri.
This is one of the best books that I read on Agile Coaching in the last four years. The author has provided quality advise on Agile transformation based on his vast experience. The book is divided into three parts. The second part and the third part offer great advise on Agile Transformation. The author talked about five dimensions to Agility namely1) Technical,2) People,3) Organizational structure4) Leadership and5) Culture. The author has written it in simple English and conveyed lots of advise and shared his experiences. This book is a must have for those serious in Agile transformations. I recommend it highly.PS: I had a free copy of the book in a pdf file and I read couple of chapters in that pdf. However, I made it a point to purchase it for the respect to the content in there. The author could have covered Technical Agility in depth. That is the only short coming.
I work with people who cringe when the words “Agile” or “Transformation” are mentioned. They have become such loaded words that I have banned them from my vocabulary and I approach each book on the topic with extreme skepticism – your typical “agile” books are often so full of recycled dogma and prescriptive “recipes”, you can often skim through the entire thing in 20 minutes because you have read it all before. That’s why I was so surprised with this book – I stumbled upon it while browsing the new books section in another electronic book service I am not sure I can name in here, and at first, I thought it was a good collection of some of the most useful resources out there (not just for agile transformations) – Cynefin, Schneider’s culture model, Beyond Budgeting, Cost of Delay, Jobs to be Done, and others. It does it in a way that is accessible yet practical and provides plenty of sources that people can go to and explore if they want to go deeper. It doesn’t feel prescriptive, it’s like a friend telling you “here are all these tools you can use, and here is how you would use them if it makes sense for your context and the complexity you are dealing with”. This is reinforced with stories, many from the author’s experience, which are in most cases quite engaging.Based on the opening chapters and that first impression, it would be tempting to dismiss the book as a nice introduction to known material (although I don’t think most of these resources have reached mainstream stat.
I read a TON of agile books (1, 2 a month) and this is BY FAR THE BEST agile book I’ve read in almost 2 years. Most books are “single-threaded” in the sense that they pick one topic and go really deep on said topic (“I-shaped”?) whereas this book runs the gamut. Jorgen expertly weaves many different topics, trains of thought, methodologies, and approaches to create an engaging read on how to holistically help an enterprise unlock their agile potential. Some of the topics included in this book (off the top of my head): Cynefin, sociocracy/holocracy, LaLoux’s Teal Organizations, Nassim Taleb, BOSSA Nova, OpenSpace, Beyond Budgeting, scaling frameworks, metrics, Schneider’s Reengineering Alternative…the list is nearly endless. There’s also some phenomenal graphics included in the book; the section on business agility metrics and the 3 phases of a transformation were so pithy yet brilliant that I took photos and emailed them to coworkers. I can’t recommend this enough…buy two copies, 1 for home, 1 for the office!DISCLAIMER – A podcast I’m part of is mentioned in the book.
This book offers a clear structure. Its content is deeply valuable and easy to understand. I have been working in the field of Agile for years and I read almost all Agile books, just for fun. This book highly valuable to get started into Enterprise Agility. The first part will give you a concise overview of why agile is needed at all. Even if you have been around for a while, you will enjoy this summary and elegant way to put things together. The chapter on Enterprise Agile is particularly interesting as it is comprehensively building up the need for a map that can support any agile transformation at the Enterprise level.Part 2 deliver what it promised, you get a full introduction to the dimensions of Enterprise Agility as it is described in the book (Technology, Organizational Design, People, Leadership and Culture). On every chapter you are introduced to key practices available in the agile landscape, this is including tailored insights obtain by the author during his professional experience.Part 3 is intriguing and again it does deliver what its promised. You will understand how to apply all you learnt in the book in a very pragmatic and concrete manner. As you read you will notice that the author is taking about topics that he has experienced himself and that if you use his ideas (in your particular context, of course) you will make your work much easier. From building and organizational working group to an operational model for business agility, finalizing with the very c.
