If youĆ¢ā¬ā¢re looking for a Star Wars book to really sink your teeth into, this is it. Freed writes dense stories full of complexity with huge payoffs for his spectacularly-developed characters. Shadow Fall follows up on the foundation laid in its predecessor by adding layers to the characters, massive twists, and creative worldbuilding. It has a great balance of gravitas and the fun that you expect from a Star Wars book all about starfighter pilots. IĆ¢ā¬ā¢ve really come to love most of these characters and canĆ¢ā¬ā¢t wait for the trilogyĆ¢ā¬ā¢s conclusion! ItĆ¢ā¬ā¢s definitely worth your time and I can almost guarantee that youĆ¢ā¬ā¢ll want to read it more than once.
Fantastic, propulsive, completely engrossing novel. The best Star wars novel I’ve read in a long time. A long time. Obviously, check out the first book first, which is also great.
It’s about the 204 Wing.
Absolutely love the book, canĆ¢ā¬ā¢t wait for the third
Not as good as the first one. Still worth reading to continue the story. All in all, an entertaining read.
I loved this book. I’d give a 4.5 because there were a few stretches of character-building where I was impatient to get back to the action, but the characters were very well-drawn and the action was intense enough that I don’t really mind. At the halfway point, there’s a battle with a conclusion so cool that I desperately wanted to see it on the big screen someday. A lot of Star Wars books feel a bit simplistic in their prose, as if the authors aren’t interested in producing anything with literary merit, just fun popcorn reads. This one and its predecessor are different. Alexander Freed’s prose is competent, compelling, and doesn’t feel dumbed down for the masses. Highly recommend.
If you enjoyed Alphabet Squadron, this is a must read. The character work is deeper than most Star Wars books and enjoyable if you. An handle the slower pace. The whole novel takes place in one system Ć¢ā¬ā a Deep Core environment that weĆ¢ā¬ā¢ve not seen before and really feels like it expands the universe in unique and interesting ways. We also get a bit more of a look at how the infantry and ground battles fit in, which adds another layer to the complex and engaging space battles. As the middle book of a trilogy, there are plenty of cliffhangers here and your favorite characters are going to face tough times. Freed is two for two on these books and I canĆ¢ā¬ā¢t wait to see how he brings it in for a landing next year!
Another good star wars universe story. Gets a little bogged down towards the end but overall really enjoyed it. Can’t wait for the next one.
SHADOW FALL by Alexander Freed is the sequel to ALPHABET SQUADRON. Alexander Freed has a history of writing Star Wars novels in the new canon that take a remarkably unglamorous look at the Galactic Civil War. His heroes are frequently cynical, full of trauma, and often confused at meeting people who really believe it is a battle of Good vs. Evil. Alexander Freed also tends to right very sympathetic Imperial characters with one of his books being a prequel to Inferno Squad. The premise of Alphabet Squadron as a series is Yrica (pronounced “Erica” in Jacen Solo fashion) Quell is a defecting Imperial starfighter pilot who has been sent to head up a ragtag band of misfits with varying starfighter types. Their goal is to bring down Shadow Wing, an elite Imperial combat unit that has been reigning hell on various groups during the Imperial retreat after Endor. It is something of a quixotic quest as the war effort is far bigger than the hunt for any individual group of Imperials, even as dangerous as Shadow Squadron. In a perhaps deliberate deconstruction of the original Rogue Squadron and Wraith Squadron novels, Alphabet Squadron is not a group that comes together as a family. Indeed, its members become even more divided and shaken up by getting to know one another. Worse, their effectiveness is frequently questionable as they are carrying around enough baggage that they never know if the other members have their backs (or even if they want them). There was a good scene in the previou.
For veteran Star Wars readers, I would say that being truly floored and caught of guard by a new book is a rare occurrence. That is not necessarily indicative of the quality of these stories, but rather it speaks to the fact that so many plot points and character arcs have already been done. I can confidently say, however, that Alexander Freed has broken that mold. Much like an expert pilot in a dogfight, Freed maneuvered this story from start to finish, making it jink every time I expected it to juke. Through two books, this Alphabet Squadron series has managed to avoid the pitfall of relying simply on the mythos of Star Wars lore, but instead should be considered an outstanding literary accomplished in its own right. Shadow Fall is a fascinating exploration of the humanity that lives close to each and every one of us, simply set in a galaxy far, far away.
