A good read to show the madness of all these Brits. Troubled childhoods, troubled adulthoods fueled by alcoholic obsession, made their work on screen compelling.
This is a lightweight look at four acting heavyweights and their relationship to booze and each other. While it’s true their drunken tales do get tiresome, I enjoyed reading the behind-the-scenes anecdotes about the filming of their many movies and found myself investigating these films further. Unfortunately many of their 70s stinkers are not available on Netflix, though I was certainly intrigued by a few.On balance the book ends on a sad note, given the ravages these men experienced and — in some cases — their regret over entire chunks of their lives lost to drink.Only Peter O’Toole comes off in the end well, and even then it is tempered.Still, I found this a guilty pleasure and enjoyed their romps and rampages and found myself on Youtube replaying some of Oliver Reed’s TV appearances. His “performance” on Letterman is a classic!
I bought this for a gift, so I didn’t read it, but I understand the person I gave it to loved it.
Unusual and unique lives. Very funny, but gives you much enmity for most spouses with the exception of Elizabeth. Very readable.
The boyos – long did they drink! Peter O’Toole was still alive at the time of the book, though he seemed so gaunt and haggard. I was surprised he lasted as long as he did – shows what the body can do to keep you going, no matter how you treat it! Still, an interesting part of history. I like all of them and their films, good and bad!
A good story and well written. Kind of makes me look at these actors a little differently now. Lots of good stories to bring up with my friends. They’ll probably be reading this book too.
I have always enjoyed reading books about movie stars. They are always entertaining. This one was no exception. I would recommend this book.
Product as described – thank you
Hellraisers was a real trip. I could never figure out why people who had almost everything, had to over indulge to this extreme. I enjoyed the book and read things I never knew. I can only guess that people like these four who lived on the edge…..liked the excitement and perks so much they wanted to stay on that high. Who knows?
I have to say that I don’t really like biographies, in fact I’ve never read one – I’ve started a few but couldn’t get through them but this one was excellent. Good background to all four, well researched, good pacing and a nice balance between drunken exploits and other events in their lives. I don’t want to give any of the stories away but I came away thinking how funny Peter o’Toole was – the man’s a legend! Buy this at all costs….
