I lost a lot more sleep than expected because this book was so hard to put down and sleep. It got the adrenaline going with how intense and intriguing it was. Absolutely absolutely worth the read I’m mad I didn’t wait until it was closer to the second book release date so I didnt have to wait as long! Bravo to Evan Winter
I originally picked this up off of an io9 ad, and I thought the story as described there seemed pretty typical. The excellence is in the execution, and the depiction of internal turmoil, which makes the otherwise stoic and almighty hero way more interesting. I know that this was supposed to be an attempt to depict a more african inspired culture, but other than the hints of a matriarchy, some of the titles used, and the periodic description of someones skin tone, it seems pretty in step with similar sword and sorcery stories. The internal growth and dialogue depicted do an amazing job of investign you in the character, and making you care about someone who’s logic seems a bit off at time. There are some rough stretches, but the book is very very good overall, and I highly recommend it.
So I was looking for something new to read and saw this and figured okay I’ll grab it. As I am reading it I’m thinking to myself this all sounds familiar. Like I’ve read it before. Turns out I had read it before. But no idea when. My records don’t show this book anywhere on my devices. The book is a bit dark but it is well done enough to make it worth reading. Tau is a picture of a man who becomes obsessed with revenge and will do anything to improve himself as a fighter to reach his goals. I think the biggest thing to take away from the book though is the whole caste system. How some always put themselves above others and how easy it is to become complacent when you’re the one considered lower. This is the part of the story I get the most out of.It is definitely worth reading. It looks like another book will come out in the series since this is book 1? I just wish I remembered when I read it before.
I read a lot of books and usually donĆ¢ā¬ā¢t even bother learning the authorĆ¢ā¬ā¢s name unless I enjoy the book. I will then take the time to look them up and find out what else I can read by them. Halfway through this book I went ahead and did that hoping to line up the sequel so I didnĆ¢ā¬ā¢t waste any time, it was that well written. I canĆ¢ā¬ā¢t recall one editing error to pull me out of the excellent story. That is almost unheard of these days and the person(s) that proofed and edited this book needs a high five. A good story is only half the battle, you have to have a good bard to tell it, this author is a great bard.
In this world, a young man fights to stay alive in a way that is achingly real. There is magic here, but no special magic to growing him, to making him a swordsman, except for the very human emotions of rage, anger, and injustice; and a demonic world that may take more toll on his character than we yet know. This is a fantastic and fantastically-written world that is so fully conceived that to immerse yourself in it is like finding a hidden piece of yourself. Real, visceral, wrenching, and exciting, I could not put this book down! Read it and burn. Burn reader, burn.
For a book that focuses so much on swordplay, there isn’t a whole lot of actual description of it. Also, everyone’s height was measured in relation of someone else, leaving me wondering if people were actually giants and huge, or simply above 6 feet. There were a few times I would have to stop to try and figure out these heights and often wondered why they were even important. On another note, this book did have some great moments, which make it worth reading even with the imperfections. My favorite by far was when the protagonist was in the tournament and faced one of the men he had been hunting down. I got chills as I read his words he shouted at the sky. While there are some twists and some deaths you see coming, there are some the are sudden, brutal and put new twists on the story line.In all, this book isn’t perfect, but it’s new and refreshing.
Not being hyperbolic nor gratuitous in my praise, just stating a fact. Comparing this book to GOT is disrespectful to both & intellectually misleading. This book, if i had to compare it to another would be a combination of Starz’ Spartacus & HBO’s Rome. Regardless, this was a great read that i couldn’t put down. The author built an incredible world, populated by amazing characters with the type of depth and scope that keeps you hooked. Read in one sitting driving from DC to NY. Now I’m pissed off i have to wait for book #2.
Best fantasy book I have read in a while and I read a lot of them. Intelligent plotting, believable and detailed fantasy world, believable political machinations. The protagonist – Tau Solarin – you cheer for him, you fear for him, you become aghast at his stupidity and buoyed along by his determination and hard work. The other characters are also fantastic and well-fleshed out, including the female characters. The only bad part is getting to the end and realizing you must wait for book 2!
Fantastic book. Great world building. The fight scenes were incredibly well written, at least to me. I loved the characters. The cruelty of the caste system was hard to read, but the bravery and triumph of the men who pushed through it was outstanding. There is much sorrow in this book. There is vengeance taken to extreme. But there is also brotherhood and loyalty and love. I inhaled this book! I can hardly wait for the next in the series. Highly recommended! I am definitely following this author.
I really enjoyed reading the fighting in this book. Very fast paced and brutal as actual sword fighting should be. The world the author built is amazing and unique. The caste infrastructure was hard to understand right out the gate but it became clearer much later on. The division of races in the was prominent and felt very believable. The Nobles aka the higher castes treated the Lessers as second class citizens despite the fact that the lessers would fight and die in war just like the Nobles. The part I didn’t like very much was the main characters relationship building. The protagonist would interact with others and he would be distant, standoffish and kind of a selfish prick. But when they died he would be torn up about it despite not having what I felt was a strong relationship. I didnt find the main character relatable at times but overall i liked reading his story and struggle to imorove to try and control his world. Great read can’t wait for part two.
