This book was FABULOUS! Quirky characters you can’t help but love. A heroine you root for and want to be your best friend. A hero who is both drool-worthy alpha and hug-worthy beta all rolled up into one hunkadorable package. The wit, the humor, the banter, the subtext, the foreplay that Lucy doesn’t even realize is foreplay. Let’s just say, I could NOT put this book down and even found myself going back to re-read the last chapter because it was JUST THAT DARN FABULOUS! This is definitely staying on my kindle because I’ll have to re-read it all again!
5 Shortcake StarsI’d be lying if I said I didn’t totally love this book. In fact, I have a major book hangover. And no that’s not from the wine I drank while reading it last night ;)This was the best contemporary romance novel I’ve read in a loooonnnggg time. And just when I was about to drop romance altogether from boring plots, one-dimensional characters, and overused cliches. This had none of those!I feel like a fangirl or something.I had a smile on my face for a good portion of this novel. It was like a cheek workout. The banter between the H and h was hilarious. Their ‘games’ were completely entertaining. The dialogue was spot on. Especially the dry humor we got from both of them. The relationship build-up was perfect. This was definitely a slow burn romance. The heroine was strong and nutty. She was weird. And I loved her. Literally laughed out loud at some of her complete weirdness. She was short and cute and the H loved to call her ‘Shortcake’ just to piss her off.And then we got the hero. Cue eyes rolling into the back of head. I’m not even going to begin on his legit hotness or I’ll be here all night. He’s a very well developed character. He isn’t just a caveman with no other thoughts than beating on his chest. There are many different facets to him that I loved and made him so real. But that sensitive side is deep down under that perfectly hot exterior ;)The plot was completely entertaining. There weren’t many side characters, but I didn’t care at all because readin.
I kept hearing about this book. It was getting such rave reviews in the book blogs I follow. Ms Thorne is a new author and this is her debut book. I held off reading it because honestly it was pretty expensive for an ebook. Well I decided to take a chance on an unknown author and dived into this book. I am so glad I did! It was truly good. It is a slow building enemy’s to lovers story. Josh and Lucy have been poking and antagonizing each other since day one. They both want the same job and are competing to get it. I typically don’t like slow building story lines but Ms Thorne did an awesome job with this story that I couldn’t wait to see how it would unfold. The whitty banter between these two was done so well that sometimes I laughed out loud. Josh and Lucy have incredible chemistry. I wish that we could have a dual POV on this book. I would of loved to see Josh’s point of view of their interactions. It was a great story and even though the price is a little steep it is worth it. I would highly recommend it.
I’m such an idiot. I must say. I have finally read The Hating Game by Sally Thorne and my life is forever changed because of it. I will never look at strawberries the same again ðŸ“. I feel so empowered being short, and its all thanks to one Lucinda Elizabeth Hutton. She’s my bestie. Talking about besties, I must thank mine for pushing me to read the book (again). She’s been patiently waiting (love you!) Lol.You guys!! I’m on cloud freaking nine after reading this wonderful piece of literature. Just thinking about it brings tears to my eyes. I can’t even function. What is life ðŸ˜. Joshua Templeman is a God and Lucy a Goddess. This book will forever be a favorite. It lives in my memories and is imprinted on my heart and soul. Thank you, Sally Thorne.
I read a lot of romance novels – ok like several a week! This book is the best I’ve read in a while and prompted me to want to make a top 10 or 20 list! The writing style is just delightful. I usually prefer books which switch POVs but this one was all from the woman’s POV but it was such a fun POV! Her internal monologue had me chuckling out loud (I never do that!) I was reading it on a plane and found myself smiling while I read it (again I never do that). The banter between the woman and guy was just as delightful as the internal monologue. Thorne adeptly moves us from the characters hating each other to desperately in love. I know it is a cliche story but I just loved the story of this one. I can’t wait to read her next work. Truly impressed.
The main story and the conflicts were about “the relationship.†The couple start out acting like they hate each other. 1st person worked well because we are in Lucy’s head and the mystery is we don’t know what Josh is thinking or why he does what he does. This was soooo fun. There is good tension and build up for the sex scenes.I do have a question. He is 6’4" or taller. She is 5’0". During sex, he is inside her, missionary position, he touches his nose to her nose. How is that possible given their height differences?I’m looking forward to the author’s next book “The Comfort Zone†coming Summer 2017.MY PERSONAL EDITORIAL:Too many New Adult authors do 1st person books that are primarily internal angst, mental negativity, depression, thoughts like I’m broken, I’m no good for anyone… I was so turned off by those books that I now frequently avoid 1st person books. But this book is different. It’s first person and reminded me how good it can be.DATA:Narrative mode: 1st person present Lucy. Story length: 384 pages. Swearing language: strong but rarely used. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes about three, two of them were long. Setting: current day I’m not sure of the location, maybe Australia? Copyright: 2016. Genre: contemporary romance.
This book has sat on my TBR for ages. No idea why. But I’m glad I cracked it when I did, after being well and truly shut of all the crap I’ve had to choose from lately.Ms. Thorne isn’t a writer, she’s an author. Yes, there is actually a difference. The book was amazing. The single POV narrated by the heroine was perfect. The heroine, Lucy and hero, Josh were well-developed and there wasn’t a lot of background noise generated by the secondaries. The plot was just straightforward with no unnecessary drama, and best of all, it didn’t revolve around sex. The couple doesn’t even get to that point until somewhere in the last 20% of the book! And those scenes when they happened were all the more meaningful because they were so beautifully written. This book was crafted with maturity and class, and there is do little of that out there nowadays in the way of conteporary fiction. The Hating Game was fun, frustrating and full of feels and from 92% on I was wiping tears. That NEVER happens. Lucy’s showdown with Josh’s dad was epic and Josh’s reaction had me simultaneously laughing and crying. The same with the couple’s declarations a bit further on.What a heartwarmer this was.Best book I’ve read in almost 2 years, hands down.Bravo, Ms. Thorne. Now publish another one, please! All the stars. I’d give it 10 if I could.
Lucy and Joshua are coworkers that "hate" each other on the surface, but secretly pine for each other underneath each’s animosity-filled office persona.I was hooked on this book from chapter 1!! I giggled and took delight in the little games they each play – think the antics of Dwight and Jim from "The Office" TV show, but with a more flirtatious undertone. Lucy is quirky, silly, and hysterically amusing. The entertaining dialogue between her and Joshua was addicting, playful, and lined with so much angst I wanted to yell: JUST DO IT ALREADY!!! The transition from hate to attraction to lust to love was so much fun that I had trouble putting this book down. And don’t think you know what’s coming. The ending had a turn of events I wasn’t expecting, and made me fall even harder for Joshua.JUST READ THIS BOOK!I’m marking it as one of my favorite books of 2018!!5 STARS!!!
The Hating Game was just what I needed. It’s a hate-to-love office romance full of hilarious banter and sexual tension. What more could you want?My favorite thing about this book was Lucy’s narrative. Most of the things she said had me grinning like a loon. When Gamin Publishing and Bexley Books merged it pit Lucy Hutton – assistant to the CEO of Gamin Publishing – and Joshua Templeman – assistant to the CEO of Bexley Books – against one other. From the moment they met they’ve hated each other so they spend their days trying to one-up the other through games such as The Mirror Game, The Staring Game, The HR Game and The Hating Game. The announcement of a promotion to COO only serves to further escalate the tension between them.I absolutely loved the banter between Josh and Lucy. They both gave as good as they got and I just couldn’t get enough of them.If you’re in the mood for an entertaining romantic comedy then look no further!
