I struggle to give this game an accurate overall rating, because it’s very difficult. The story is the best I have ever experienced in Video games, bar none. Better than any Final Fantasy, even better than my old personal favorite, Silent Hill 2. I will not spoil anything, but I simply can not give the story enough praise! Whats even worse is it sneaks up on you, really hitting you with the true, full story upon New Game + (which starts you halfway through the game, with all your old weapons, items, etc). It is more than worth the second playthrough, just for the story alone. The audio is also among the best I have ever heard. Cavia put a LOT of work into this game, and it really shows. My favorite song is Cold Steel Coffin, an epic opera used as a near-ghost-town’s music. The graphics are about average, maybe slightly below. That being said, they aren’t distracting. They aren’t so bad as to ruin your immersion. They are fine, just not breathtaking. The gameplay is fun, but very repetitive. Cavia (the developers of this game) produced Drakengard and Drakengard 2 (and this game is actually based on one of the endings of Drakengard, though you don’t need to play Drakengard to enjoy this game). If you’ve played either of those games, you will know what you are getting yourself into, as far as gameplay goes. It’s a little different, but not all that much. Swords and Spells. No dragon riding this time, however.I’ve heard people complain about the controls in this game..
As a completionist, this game was both fun and hellish for me. The quest system, the upgradable weapons, there is a lot of things to do in the game, but perhaps too much, some of the quests require a bunch of drop items that you simply have to keep on grinding for. The story is not bad but the sidequests lack any real story, most of them are simply go grind for these items, go back, get reward, rinse and repeat.
This game is the awesome, period. It mixes hack-n-slash and JRPG gameplay and tells one of the best stories I have EVER experienced in gaming. It has one of the best soundtracks ever put into a video game. It has, perhaps, the ugliest protagonist in video game history (well, there is boogerman. haha).I dont cry, like, ever.I pride myself on being emotionless. To say this game brought a tear to my eye would be an understatement. With, maybe, the exception of Mass Effect 3, this game gave me more "feels" than any game I’ve ever played. The graphics are like mid-PS2 quality but if you’re not a graphics snob and havent played this…. Do it.. NOW! and make sure you play through all 4 endings.(Oh yeah, in the Japanese version the chick has male and female "parts". Just thought I’d throw that out there. haha)
Not gonna lie. I bought this only after playing Nier: Automata and that I had a PS3 in my storage.Having played the game, I found it not so bad and was able to feel the connection between this and Automata.
Purchased this game for 50$ after completing Nier:Automata, no regrets. The game is very good and a must play if you want to understand the Nier world better
I have to say I had a lot of fun with this one, Cavia has pretty much taken the endearing B-tier JRPG to an artform. The narrative and art design is highly unique and even as someone pretty overdosed and jaded on the genre trappings, I found it surprisingly engaging and downright interesting.Fun character growth, simple and straight forward magic and melee, lots of REALLY inventive encounters.Visuals have a nice color tone, good art direction, but it is ultimately a bit Playstation 2.5-esque. Music is just wonderful, probably my favorite soundtrack of the generation thus far.Ultimately, it’s a rough around the edges title, but ultimately when the chips come down, does anyone really care if it’s not as perfectly polished and presented? This completely nonsensical focus on the most ridiculous aspects of visual appeal is what’s causing the console market to hemorrhage developers and money like it has been lately.Anyhow, kudos to Square on the publish and support. It’s helped wash the taste of Final Fantasy XIII’s barely-a-game nonsense out of my mouth.
I’m playing it far longer than I expected.
This game is very entertaining, I felt like playing Zelda again. There are quests that you may follow to get rewards or know more of the story. The story itself is interesting, from the beginning you notice weird things like a normal man living more than a thousand years and that mystery is revealed at the end.The multiple finals are nice, the second final changes your view of what was good or wrong in the game, I can’t say more but it’s recommended to at least see the two first finals.Achieving platinum is not difficult but it’s veeeeery time consuming, so I opted not to.Most critics I’ve read about this game were about the graphics, but I think you should see gameplays in youtube to decide for yourself because to me, the graphics in videos are awesome, and graphics in-game are normal. And for me, in a game there are things story and gameplay are more important than graphics.
Was what was expected
If you’re looking for top notch gameplay, you’ll probably have to settle for it’s sequel.Buy this game for the characters, the journey, the soundtrack. After I was done with this game I bought every piece of soundtrack in addition to all of their versions.
