GREAT
I’ve played the NHL series the last three years and unfortunately the visuals have not change much but realism and player interactions just keep getting better. There have been many little tweaks to the gameplay. Players falling over and losing some balance after or during physical play. The puck seems to respond a bit more realistic and unpredictable after rebounds, bouncing off players/skates and not just “sticking” to the nearest player giving them the puck. Just being able to interact with goalies is a vast improvement to the game. I was able to get a tight shot in and bump the goalie, that forward momentum into the goalie pushed the puck through the five hole. Replays after a big play to the net are recaptured better than last year. You can now also review all the highlight goals, shots and hits after each game. The bottom line is if you love watching hockey, this years game brings you closer to that feeling of watching your favorite team in action. EA’s improvements and presentation make this version the best one yet. Wait untill next next gen for major graphics overhaul and enjoy the improved realism in gameplay now.
Every year I grapple with the decision to purchase the newest volume of EA Sports NHL. Some years feel spot on, some are hit and miss, and others feel like they just tried to change too much at one time. I love hockey, but I’m also patient. I’m usually willing to wait 5-6 months into the season to give the price time to come down. Last year in doing so I ended up totally forgetting to pick up 2011. So this is not a direct comparison of 2011 to 2012, but rather my own observations on 2012 as someone who owns a decent backlog of these games and took a one season hiatus.Overall, the AI has gotten a lot better. I like to start with the All-Star setting so I’m fighting for each win from the beginning in GM Mode. .500 hockey doesn’t come easily because the goaltenders are stingy, players poke check and lift sticks aggressively, and the defense does a better job of cluttering up the middle to disrupt centering passes and block shots. It feels like a more honest mix of goals for me in the average game because hard pinpoint passes and one timers are a bit more difficult to execute. Natural passes feel wimpy and ineffective now that a boost is provided by holding down the button. It gives more control, but adds another thing to master. Tips ins off of shots from the point play a bigger role and look more believable.Stick breaks, dropped sticks, and efforts to provide more realistic hitting help the gameplay overall. But as with most years you can get unrealistically hit happy.
Lets face it, the NHL selection is about as varied as the NFL selection if you want to be a pro with out actually being talented enough at the sport. I will be the first to say I am not a solid skater and I have only ever been good at street hockey, and that was 9 years ago when I played. However, this game will let you act like you have skill and let you think you know what you’re talking about. I am an avid spectator of NHL but I do not know the ins and outs of what it takes to be a great team, I only know the rules and the basic strategy, like every other person that would write a review for this game on retrolio. This is a solid game, it has improved on all the past versions, and the contact is much more realistic. If you try to put a guy into the boards that is skating full bore at you, you are going to bounce off while only deflecting his path, but if you catch a guy off balance, BAM! Passing is more realistic, as is puck control. The be a pro mode is way more realistic this time, you can even watch the game from the bench point of view during off shifts if you want. There aren’t many cheap goals any more. If you are playing on a respectable difficulty, the gimmy shots of the past are no longer, I am finding the scores to be much more reasonable now then in the past. If you have a legit code you will get roster updates, as well as multiple other updates whenever need be.If you enjoy hockey, and dont think you are actually a pro, you will enjoy this game a lot. If you are l.
This game is very fun to play. I loved 2009 because of its fast play, though 2010 was slow and a step backwards. I also enjoyed 2011 but think that this new game 2012 is the best yet. Very realistic. The online gameplay is awesome! I highly recommend this game to all hockey game fans. I am 43 and my son is 10 and we both love it.
Very Nice
Of course I’m a huge several decades long Penguins/Canucks fan (so I’ll be happy whoever wins the season openers), so seeing the Winter Classic, where Crosby got injured, and the Stanley Cup final, where Vancouver lost, on the opening of this video game was like a knife to the heart. At first I was like “Why the *&%^ did I buy this thing? It’s just reminding me of my pain!” But, then once I started playing it, I was soooo addicted. Hockey, NHL 12 and Starbucks are my true addictions. It is Seattle, btw!!!But once I got passed that, it’s a really fun game. I learned how to play in Practice Mode. At first I tried the Free Skate, but it was not a place to start off. Those goalies were owning me. So then I tried the shooting portion of Practice Mode very much like the All Star “Super Skills accuracy challenge” (Which Malkin won in 2009). It really helped me learn how to shoot. I was playing Crosby, Malkin, Iginla, and the Sedin twins, it’s just fun. It’s all accomplished in the left and right sticks on the PS3 controller. Then I took Staal and did the timed speed skate. After several days I tried the Free Skate again. I did better, but the real bank I made was playing the Practice Team Mode. Initially I tried the 5 on 5 relays, but that was way too hard. I was getting 1% of pucks in the net. Then I tried 5 on 0 and I started to “get it”. Finally, once I did a couple hundred 5 on 3s, I started making money! The trick is to do all that “showboating” (lol) that all the superstars do.
I love this game and I wanted it for so long but every where I looked wanted to much money for it and retrolio had it for dirt cheap. I’m gonna buy more games from retrolio.
I have always thought that NHL had the best gameplay of any sports game. The physics and flow of the game is so much like real life compared to a game like Madden. The players interactions and contact with each is more realistic than any other series except maybe the new FIFA. Even if you dont like hockey, this game is sure to impress.
The game is fun, the rosters are updated. Gameplay has improved and has become more intricate. Graphics remain the same since 09 in my opinion. Nothing really significant to notate other than the fuller control.
