With a line like “May be Innocent, May be Sweet … Ain’t Half as Nice, As Rotting Meat” uttered by Blix the troll regarding the lovely Mia Sara as Lili, how can you go wrong? Ridley Scott’s visual masterpiece of fantasy and adventure, LEGEND, is a scintillating transmogrification of reality rendered in classic 1980s cinema. The ubiquitous character of Darkness is played by Tim Curry and Tom Cruise appears in his role as our protagonist, Jack. As other reviewers have said, the film may not appeal to anyone under 40 years of age, but for those of us who were kids or young adults in the 1980s, the film is a treasured relic from an age of innocence before 9-11 and the insanity of the second millennium. This film should be on the proverbial list of movies not to be missed before you die.
I just have to write this review. Make sure when you purchase legend you purchase the ultimate addition. So you get bothdisc. The director’s cut (terrible!) and the original. Or just buy the original. The director’s cut is just horrible horrible horrible!!!I watched that one this pass weekend. I think it’s actually longer than the original. The music is most annoying. It’s not quiet like the old. Tom Cruise talks to much and Mia sings YUK!!! Although the directors cut is visually prettier because they digitally enhance it. But totally not worth it. The dance part, they ruined it by changing the music to this disney version. It’s horrible and less creepy. So get the original if your looking for the film from when you were a kid. I gave this 4 stars for the old legend not the horrible director’s cut. The old edit was just fine why did they have to go and ruin it. I just can’t get over the music is was just terrible terrible!!!!
Nostalgic for the awesome 80’s fantasy movie Legend you remember from your youth? Have you tried to watch the DVD version & shuddered at the “music” that assaulted your ears while wondering what on earth was wrong? The Ultimate edition to the rescue! This edition includes the theatrical version- the movie of our childhood memories, the one with the Tangerine Dream soundtrack!Watch it, enjoy it in all of its gloriousness!! It’s awesome!!!
The “Ultimate” dvd set, the one with the picture of Darkness reaching out holding a small white …something.. with Jack and Lily in it, is the one you want if you want the Tangerine Dream soundtrack. This one has two dvds in it – Disk 1 is the “Director’s Cut” with the orchestral soundtrack, which is nice but honestly, just makes it sound like every other big budget movie. Disk 2 is the US release with the Tangerine Dream soundtrack I remembered, and which I think gives it an incredible, unique atmosphere.I have three or four other DVDs I’ve bought over the years that *say* they include this soundtrack. This is the only one that actually does so far, and it took two dvds to do it. Lots of extras an bonus features too.
Directed by Ridley Scott, starring Mia Sara as the Princess, Tom Cruise as the Hero, and Tim Curry as the Lord of Darkness. This is a classic fairy tale of pure good battling evil to the death amidst spectacular surroundings. Set in a mythical forest with fairies, goblins, unicorns (who control the daylight), the Lord of Darkness (who controls the dark), and mortals (Cruise) who is chosen by fate to undertake a heroic quest and save the world. Tim Curry, who had to be talked into playing this part by Ridley Scott, is amazing! In an early interview Tom Cruise admitted that he accepted this role because he wanted to be in a movie with Mia Sara. This 1985 fantasy/adventure was only the third film of Ridley Scott. After “Blade Runner,” Ridley Scott went to writer William Hjortsberg, and asks him to write a fantasy script. He told him it had to have unicorns, fairies, goblins, and mortals in it. According to Ridley Scott, the screenplay that William Hjortsberg delivered was the best draft he had ever read. Everyone involved in the project was of the same opinion, except it was too long, and though it was beautiful, some of it just could not be filmed. For example, 1985 is pre-CG and you could not film “everywhere the unicorns walked flowers grew up through the ground”. All it needed was some editing. Then a forest to shoot it in. A real forest proved impossible because of light issues. So they found an aircraft hangar and built their own forest. They built all big trees,.
One of my favorite ’80s movies! 1985…Cable TV, Showtime, HBO, The Movie Channel. I tried to see this anytime I could when it was on. This was Tom before TOP GUN. Mia before FERRIS BUELLER. This Blu-ray edition is great! Finally, giving the audience and fans alike the CHOICE to which version they want to see!! (Hey director of THE WARRIORS, take notice!!). This movie looks beautiful in Blu-ray and I watched it on a Samsung 60 inch LED. Everything was beautiful and the sound was gorgeous. The menu was well done with loads of extras and options available. If you love this movie like I do, you are sure to want to get THIS edition for your movie library!Special Features are written already by retrolio in description for this edition and are wonderful. Again, well done Ridley Scott and thank you for putting both versions on the same disc with all the extras. I wish other director’s would follow your lead in this.
I have seen “Legend” in every format, from TV broadcasts to DVD to Blu-Ray, and each version of the movie. For no particular or reported reason in the theatrical version, the Blu-ray omitted a note from a woodwind near the beginning after Darkness says “something troubles me.” This has been restored in the Prime streaming edition. The Blu-Ray also changed the transition from that scene to the scene of Lilly in the forest, and that has been restored to what it was before the Blu-Ray.As for other comments by people remarking how they didn’t get what they thought they were ordering, there is no reason for this because the information is out there and a look thorough on-screen menus can reveal content.
FINALLY FOUND THE ONE WITH THE US THEATRICAL RELEASE WITH TANGERINE DREAM SOUNDTRACK!!!! I cannot tell you how long I have been looking for it!
This has been one of my favorite movies for most of my life. This movie has its flaws, of course, all things do, but any fan of fantasy should watch it. If you don’t care for fantasy, watch it because it is impressively creative and beautiful in terms of costume and set-design. The story is creative, like the entire film, it draws from small bits of so many fairy-tales and classical elements of fantasy, and in that, deserves credit. It has outstanding lines and beauty, it has all elements of a good story. There is something outright enchanting about it. I especially love Blick, the scenes in the forest, and Darkness’ castle. I could watch this movie again-and-again without tiring of it and have watched it with many friends, it’s my go-to “have you seen this movie?” when I need a way to entertain people for a night.
Ridley Scott (Director) has made some pretty extraordinary films– Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma and Louise, Gladiator to name a few. Legend is a feather in his cap. This genre of fantasy is one of the most challenging to escape the normal cliches or derivatives of LOTR. This picture grabs hold of the imagination and keeps it until a lesson is learned. The plot is enriched by magnificent characters and excitement. There’s enough action to satisfy the hunger for swordplay and magical battles but it is driven by highly nuanced relationships which center around the balance of good and evil, in this case spelled out as Light vs. Dark. There is an ingenious quality to Legend which can only come from a brilliant team of set designers, costume makers, special effects makeup, prop makers, photography, editing, etc. And the music? This is recognized as a classic film score from one of the best ever. The film is dazzling and fresh despite its age. Highly recommended and Five Stars!
