I wanted to be excited for this when it was first announced (I wasn’t gonna get it bc $100 is kinda steep for a glorified emulation box, but hey, it’s at least cool). But, as things like the weak game lineup got released (though Mr. Driller is underrated IMO), it was clear that Sony wasn’t really giving this project their all. Then the launch, erm, happened, with price cuts following shortly after. As the price went down, I pledged to buy it at $25… and it went down to $20.I’m not gonna talk in detail about how great hacking this thing is because every other review does that. I will say that this is a great way to play the entire PS1 library (Bubsy 3D, here I come!), or – with the aid of RetroArch – pretty much any retro game you want. So, at anywhere between $20 and $40 it’s still gonna end up being cheaper (and probably easier) than the latest Raspberry Pi (including all required components) as far as emulation boxes go. Anything more than that really isn’t worth it.
Ok let’s be clear… this is not the best mini in the market… is not even close… but lets wait it gets hacked and we may have graphics enhancement and we may even load more of our beloved games into the 16GB on board… this mini is some kind of a bet… black or red… hackable or not hackable…
A lot of the other reviews point out the flaws that only hardcore gamers and tech-savvy individuals will notice or even care about such as the fact that 9 out of the 20 games are the PAL (European) version of the games (which run at a slower frame rate), the lack of extra features such as a variety of menu backgrounds and screen resolution options (which the NES and SNES Classic both offer), or the lack of dual shock controllers. This review will contain only brief references of the above topics. Instead, I’ll be looking at how the system performs from a casual gamer’s perspective. To start off, the packaging is great (not to mention as authentic as possible), the startup of the system (as well as the startup of the games) is/are about as spot-on as possible, and the menu screen looks like the classic PS1 memory card screen which could be seen when the PS1 was booted up without a game in it making it as authentic as possible. The controllers continue with the authentic look and feel because they are the original PS1 controllers. As opposed to popular opinion, the controllers work perfectly fine with the games on the system (in fact a dual shock controller would probably only be helpful with one or two of the games). The cords are a little short, but if you’re setting this up in your bedroom, you shouldn’t have a problem. There is only one save state for each game (however most of the games do have their own built-in save feature so this isn’t too much of a problem) which could.
This thing is awesome. I got the original PS One for Christmas many years ago, and here it is again! The negative reviews on this thing are WAY WAY INACCURATE.You can change the settings on these games by pressing the select+triangle button on the controller during the playstation load screen. You can change the game from the European version to the US version, you can load as many games as you want to the console using a USB thumb drive. Sony made this thing open source so you could hack it up however you want. Don’t listen to these people crying and whining about how bad it sucks, because it doesn’t. This thing is awesome! I like the game list it came with, lots of stuff I never played. It has been really awesome to add my favorites Resident Evil 2, NFL Gameday, Gran Turismo with a simple USB thumb drive.Trust me, it’s awesome. Totally worth it. There is a TON of videos on youtube on how to do all this stuff I have mentioned above.ENJOY!!!!!
Use the BleemSync/Retroarch mod. All you do is just copy files to a USB drive, plug in and voila! You can run all the retro game systems you want! There are also adapters to use dual shock controllers too.
This is going to be a very quick, bare-bones summary. The console is small, cute, and authentic, although it is actually larger overall than I had expected after owning a Raspberry Pi 2. The controllers, though extremely light and giving an impression of fragility, actually feel quite satisfying when used and hearken back to the original non-dualshock pads that came with the first generation Playstation. The included games are a mixed bag, but that point becomes moot when you perform a softmod on the system. This allows you to install whatever titles you want as well as providing additional emulation options for other systems, improving the overall experience tremendously. I’m still messing about with mine, but i’m having fun customizing things and I have found it to be a great value at this sale/liquidation price as I never would have paid the ~$100 initial asking price. If you like tinkering or have had experience setting up single board computers like the Raspberry Pi before, or just like tidy neat little emulation stations, it’s hard to go wrong at $30 bucks.
Where to start…. well yes some games are PAL yeah they have slower frame rates… is it a deal breaker? Nah! Is not! I have had fun with it so far! And that is what games are supposed to be for! To have fun! Do I wish there would be more games? Yes! I do I hate tha games loaded on it? NOPE!I am totally going to use 3rd party software to be able to run NTSC version of the games whatever is locked inside the console! It has a lot of potential! Is it perfect? No! Is it worth the 52 bucks that I got it for? YOU BET IT DOES! Go into it with an open mind and don’t expect perfection and you would enjoy this system! If you are someone obsessed with raw power and just the top of the line on everything you would be very disappointed here!
im pretty sure these people leaving negative reviews think mayonnaise is spicy.console is fine, games work fine, its a lot of fun if you are not a biased little child. i am only taking 1 star off because it does not come with a power brick.also the people complaining about the game selection, you do realize these are the games that do not require a dualshock controller and these are the games that started the playstation franchise, then later down the road we started seeing dualshock controllers and a bigger and better game selection. sony did nothing wrong here, THIS IS WHAT THEY STARTED WITH! i am also sure we will see some “upgrades” or some sort of attachments for this down the road.Update: i saw some complaints about frame rate issues, i noticed not 1. maybe those people should not play their games on a potato.
I bought 2 PS classics because true blue mini USB stick sold on retrolio for $25 that adds 101 more games to the PS classic system!!!! total you can get 121 games on PS classic! :) also $20 8bitdo USB bluetooth adapter allows you to use PS4 controllers, hope this help. worth it.
This is better than I expected from looking at reviews. The controllers and console are so brilliantly designed It’s almost perfect. The games are pretty hard to get used to if you are a more modern gamer but once you get into it you can’t help but be thankful for his piece of nostalgia. You can download more games!!! I guarantee nobody would complain if on the box it said you could put games on it because everyone doesn’t want to buy this because of the low selection of games. Make sure you get the US version of games because they have better graphics and frame rate. The one thing that was probably on retrolio was the fact that they just slapped the sticker on the box and sent it through the country with no cardboard box to conceal. So practically if I wasn’t home and it was left on my front door that there’d be a 100 PlayStation system for everyone to see, pretty confused but whatever.
