I admit that I am a huge fan of the EDF series. The huge scale of the battles, the amount of weapons, the humor and the amount of destruction that your soldier can unleash is so much fun. The latest and greatest ‘version’ is EDF 2025 and Sandlot has upgraded almost everything from the graphics to the class system.PROS1) Upgraded graphics on character models and environments2) Split screen co-op3) More funny EDF dialog!4) Nice class systemCONS1) Lack of enemy variety in the first 20 or so missions is a letdown2) Still a pretty big drop in FPS when in co-op and there is a lot of destruction onscreenAnyway, BUY THIS GAME! It is a blast, especially when playing along with your friends.
Mad, large-scale destruction. Giant bugs and robots. If I have to say more, then this might not be the game for you.I found the first EDF title in a bargain bin somewhere and bought it on a lark. I LOVED it, cheese, graphical glitches and all. This one ups the ante in every measurable way. The Wing Diver character class is TONS of fun and for the lovers of cheesy sci-fi, blow-everything-up gameplay, and/or couch co-op, this one should be on your short list.
If you liked the previous games you’ll love this one. Its a great game to just turn your brain off and shoot things.
Spent about 4 hours playing split-screen co-op with my buddy. Let me be clear, the rating does not represent the graphics (barely better than games that came out 10 years ago), or the depth (your starting weapons are better than 90% of what you unlock), or anything about the actual programming/game.It represents how much we were laughing at the bad dialogue, simplistic gameplay, and crazy levels in the game.To be sure, we had a blast playing because it was almost like being inside of a B movie, and as bad as all the gameplay elements were in and of themselves, as a whole the entire experience was FUN.I think this would be an awful game for single play, but when playing with friends I don’t think you can go wrong here.I’m sorry if this review sounds contradictory, but this was actually a really fun game to play DESPITE all of the issues."GIANT INSECTS!" and "AFTER SEVEN YEARS!" were two catch phrases we kept repeating and guffawing over the entire time.Definitely recommend this as a rental or something to play through over a couple of weekends. Replay value is meh… with all the other games coming out, but I definitely don’t regret the purchase.
The Earth Defense Force series is one of my favorite video game series of all time. Despite not having the best graphics, story, music, voice acting, or sound, I always find myself coming back to the series when I am looking for some great, mindless fun.The premise is simple. Aliens and insects are invading Earth and it is up to the Earth Defense Force to send them packing. Essentially, you are the star of a campy 50’s alien invasion story. You can choose between one of four classes to play the game. The Ranger is your standard infantry soldier who has access to very powerful weaponry, including sniper rifles and rocket launchers. The Wing Diver can fly and has access to exotic alien weapons. The Fencer is a power-armored death machine that can equip up to four different weapons and can either enter melee with giant hammers & swords or just shred bugs with dual gattling guns & artillery pieces. Lastly, the Air Raider can summon tanks, helicopters, & mech suits to the field, and place markers for massive artillery strikes. Throughout the game, you can increase your health and find new weapons by picking up boxes dropped by dead aliens. Some of the the later gear is absolutely nuts, ranging from massive scythes that leave a swath of destruction, tanks that fire shells so large the recoil sends the tank back 5 feet, and even hijacking orbital lasers to annihilate ants. The game is about as deep as a puddle. You spend most of the time killing ants, spiders, wasps, robo.
The frame rate can get terribly bogged down. The graphics can look a bit too simplistic. The enemy web projectiles can clip through buildings and hit you blocks away. The controls are sometimes extremely terrible. But that doesn’t matter, because we are the EDF!Charge forth with only your wits and a grenade launcher that shoots 25 grenades at once.Speed is life as you fly around as a swimsuit model with a fighter jet smashed on to her, raining down lightning as a thunder god.Break through the shield screen in power armor and smash the enemy with a giant hammer that does 12000 damage.Allies await your call to deliver rail gun tanks, laser-shooting helicopters, giant mechs, or a missile the size of a skyscraper. The enemy is covering the earth. Fight and take back the sky!EDF! EDF! EDF! EDF! EDF!
He loves this game!
Fun, Fun, Fun. If you are interested in spending time with a friend, child, or that game loving significant other; well this is the game to past the time. If you are interested in graphically intense or realistic game play, this will not fit your itch. The difficulty varies, but makes the game even more fun and adds to the fast pace. One of the best shoot’em-ups around. The enemies are giant insects, dragons, and robots – no blood, no gore, no worries, no cursing.Ultimately, you’ll have fun playing it.
Between this game and the previous EDF 2017, a friend and I have spent hundreds of hours killing gigantic bugs, and we’ve had a blast! It’s definitely the best split-screen gaming out there.Sandlot has really ramped up the experience by adding three new classes, and the weapons are, as always, insane. The frame-rate suffers a bit in split-screen mode, though, since they’ve now given every player, teammate, and bug rag-doll and have made it so that buildings collapse in stages and into interacting fragments.I wish Sandlot would’ve released this game on the next-gen systems since the 360 and PS3 are having trouble containing the sheer amount of awesome that the developers have packed in.
Never played previous versions before and I instantly fell in love with the chaotic world of bug smashing. Imagine the Dynasty Warrior game but with ten times the destruction and chaos. The game is packed with a lot of tongue and cheek dialogue with voice acting that reminds you of the old Resident Evil part 1. ("You are trained to fight giant insects! Stand your ground!") While the graphic quality and in many cases, the programming and gameplay reflect the same level of unpolished, small studio quality, trying to complain about this game is like trying to complain that Starship Troopers is a cheesy movie. Know that this game is more about fun than quality, and you’re good to go.My girlfriend who doesn’t play much action games were able to instantly pick this game up and play split screen with us, which is a testament to the fact that this game does have the gameplay and fun factor for the average gamer, not just hard core geeks like myself. :)
