so i bought this game because i was having my wisdom teeth out and needed something to waste away a few days where i couldn’t do anything else. it worked excellently in this application. i have ~35 hours into the game since i bought it, i don’t know how close i am to beating it, i’d guess about 2/3. i like the combat system a lot. if you’ve played ‘dark souls’, it’s easier than that. the ‘pawn’ system, where you have A.I. members of your party to help you out, is kinda cool. if you play conservatively, you’ll barely ever die in this game. there’s nothing spectacular about the game, really, it’s just good overall. being that i only paid like ten bucks for it used, it was well worth the purchase.
Let me start off by saying that Dragon’s Dogma is not a perfect game (if such a thing exists) but for every flaw, there’s a welcome surprise. The game is highly immersive with an exciting combat system and interesting world to explore. The quests are rarely outside-the-box, but the familiarity is comforting with so many other innovations. All dialogue is fully voiced and for the most part, well done. You are given access to create your own pawn (follower) and may borrow 2 others from friends or strangers. This is where the game really shines. Leveling and specializing your pawn, to share with the world, is a joy. Finding just the right pawns from other people is rewarding and fun.In short… if you love great games – pick this one up.
This is an excellent RPG, and everyone with a PS3 and a love for RPG’s should at least rent this game to try it out.One unique feature that this game offers that I’ve never seen before is that you can Respec your character completely, but you have to be smart about it. For example I started the game as a Strider (daggers and bow character). At about level 35 or so I totally maxed that skill set. And I can re-class into ANY other class I want to (strider, ranger, assassin have the same core abilities so that is the most efficient). OR instead I could choose to become a Mage, or a Tank or whatever. You retain all skills previously acquired, but may only use those assigned to the current class you are spec’ed in. What this means is that you could become a max level Mage, and a max level Ranger (or any combination) have 2 sets of gear and when you get bored of a certain class you can change back and forth at no cost at an Inn. That’s really cool if you ask me, and there is a New Game+ feature so you could do your second playthrough as a completely different class!
Amazing; though, with tweeks, could be perfect. This game has all the elements to surpass The Elder Scrolls and Dark Souls as the RPG to play. I have plunked about 20 or more hours into Dragons Dogma and I feel this is the better of the three games. So, how does it play? Take the fighting elements of Lord of the Rings: War in the North and Two Worlds 2(no dismemberments, though), add the grabbing ability of Shadow of the Colossus (there are huge enemies you can, and need to climb upon–normal battles are really epic), the RPG side of Skyrim (open world) and Monster Hunter series (day/night, farming and creating resources). The voice overs are not perfect, but good. Graphically the game is beautiful. There is a companion system called “pawns” where you hire/recruit other gamers pawns (secondary created toons). These pawns are AI controlled, but using the abilities set by the other gamers. when done with that pawn (only your own pawn levels with your character, so you need to change pawns often), that other gamers pawn returns to its owner with experience and possible gift(s). Companions are actually useful and “learn” the ways of defeating enemies (liquid–or–learning AI).Currency in the game is the usual gold to buy goodies. There is an ability (special moves, passive upgrades) system that comes with experience in order to have your character AND pawn become more deadly with some interesting moves and spells. The leveling system is automatic, so there is no managing.
Pros:-Action style fighting. Especially boss-like monsters, climbing onto monster and attacking. This is more like action-style of games versus past RPG games. I definitely liked the combination of this.-Open ended game play.-Character creation.-Primary Pawn creation.-Hours and hours of game play.-Multitude of items to customize your character.-Very good graphics.Cons:Mind you, these are more annoyances than serious cons. I have played the game a couple times over, while still enjoying it.-Leveling… The leveling model is way too simplistic. It is easily possible to max out all classes. At this point you get bored quick.-Pawn classes, you are not able to change your pawn classes to the advance classes.-Skills… You have to be at an Inn to select/change your skills. Even if you have already learned them.-Very limited Items… Weapons/armor limitation per classes = Lame. There are far better methods of pros/cons of styles of armor/weapons used per classes. Mobility versus Protection, not a new concept.-Armor design, there is more of a Japanese influence with the design than European. Hybrid samurai/European styles.Once again, the cons are just nitpicking. Overall the game seems like a Skyrim/Devil May Cry/Zelda type of game. Yeah, it reminded me a lot of Zelda. The music, the acting, the overall feel of the game.It is almost like they wanted to make a Skyrim style of Zelda with a Devil May Cry action. Very good outcome, look forward to the further development in the sequels..
No *Dragon Age*, but still has many touches of epicness in its story. And it has a more active combat system than many RPGs (yes, you CAN climb up on giant bosses and stab at their necks, so the wins feel like real wins). It’s amusingly meta in calling the rest of your party extra-dimensional “pawn” servants, and yet you don’t control them directly but can take advice from them and let them spot loot you missed– oddly realistic. Its main limit is that characters tend to max out their levels, at least as far as qualifying for new skills, so you’re encouraged to cross-train in other classes that may not combine with the first. (Another limit is that its deliciously complex inventory/crafting system never lets you sort things by name– where’s that anti-curse potion??)The combat engine does give melee combatants more love than ranged characters. Arrows and spells are powerful (and spells are seriously flashy), but most of them are just damage, and the challenge of aiming a bow or holding the Conjure button down long enough doesn’t compare to how warriors can leap from one foe onto another or time a precision block. Although, taking out the dreaded Griffin with one Oz-caliber tornado spell almost makes up for it, :)Does the job nicely.
Fantastic game so far, been playing since I got it a week ago, and seem to be somewhat addicted. After playing Skyrim and hating how horrible the controls are, this game is fantastic for providing the open world RPG that I was looking for with controls that are responsive and quick, and have quite a number of skills for each class to play with. Highly recommend, reminds me of an open world Dragon Age, which to me is a great thing.Update:Well, I logged on my game shortly after this review was posted to get a big error saying “Your save game is corrupt, would you like to start a new one?” after….a good 60+ hours invested, no, i did not want to make a new game. Sold it the next day. Unfortunate, that it was a fun game, but no way i’m putting the time back into it when out of the blue the save game corrupted. Make sure you copy your save game to a USB device every couple days!
Well, The game is well made, No glitches yet that I can see. It is entertaining, and fun to play. However, People around me cannot stand the voice acting! One of my pawns voice sounds to masculin for a women. The English accents sound fake..The merchant in Gran Soren sounds like he is auditioning to replace Ringo in the Beatles! You constantly hear the same repeated lines..” Fire, It `Ates it” (Hates)”Strength in number ,Arisen!”I wish that part was done a little better. The game is still wonderful and worth the time put in!
I saw this game probably a year ago and have been waiting for it since, i forgot about it and saw it was coming out the next week so i was like hey why not preorder? and it was the 2nd preorder ive ever done and 1 of the best RPGs ive played, im a hardcore demons/dark souls player, 2 of my favorite games. if you liked those games youll love this, the gameplay is like DS but with a bit more action too it, and more RPG.People compare this game to skyrim just to give it a bad name in comparison but dont listen to them they’re ignorant, these are 2 completely different games, the only thing related to skyrim is the fact its open world, but other than that nothing is alike. the class system used is great, it adds lots of options and gives the game replay value, which is rare these days, the pawn system is great, there is no direct multiplayer but this makes up for it since you get to use the other player created pawns, which is a NPC that fights along side you, you customize them just like you do your main character, you give commands but its all action based live fighting not turn based. There is a challenge with the game with it being open world, its kind of hard to figure out where to go if you dont pay attention, and if you wander too far you’re bound to hit a road block of enemies you think you can beat…but turn out to be horribly mistaken, this may sound dumb but it adds to the adventure, there are a ton of side quest to do to keep yourself busy and plenty of places to go,.
My husband and i started playing skyrim first but we got fed up waiting for the dlc so we started playing Dragon’s Dogma. It’s a very addictive game (before you know it you’ve been playing all day) there is almost nothing useless to pick up and i love how much control you get over your character’s look and you’re pawn’s look as well. The pawn system is great you can recruit 2 additional pawns to help the pawns do learn how to do the quests and defeat enemies adn will helpif you get stuck and any of your psn friends’ pawns are free no matter the level difference
