PROS:- My daughter absolutely loved Skylanders. She was glued to it. For at least 3 years, she played Skylanders for at least an hour every single day. Whenever a new iteration came out, she had to have it. The top of the long shelving unit that ran across the oversized desk in our library was wall-to-wall Skylanders. We always knew what to get her for every gift-giving occasion.CONS:- Then one day she stopped playing on a dime because of the violence involved, even though good always wins.- The major drawback to Skylanders is that this is the gift that keeps on giving – in reverse. YouĆ¢ā¬ā¢re not just going to be buying a video game. YouĆ¢ā¬ā¢re going to be buying many many figures and other trinkets. WeĆ¢ā¬ā¢re easily into this for over a thousand dollars! Not bad for one video game. This was the first game to make this leap. After that, Disney Infinity and Lego Dimensions got in on the act. ItĆ¢ā¬ā¢s brilliant from a corporate perspective. Not so much from a consumer perspective.THE KID SAYS: This game was absolutely revolutionary. The idea of being able to take real life toys and put them into video games was a phenomenal one indeed. Making them collectibles was especially good from a marketing standpoint, and giving every character unique backstories was a surefire way to guarantee that people would actually want to collect them all. Enjoyed playing.BOTTOM LINE: Excellent game good for many many hours of gameplay. Just know what youĆ¢ā¬ā¢re getting into.
I bought this game for my seven year old son last Christmas. At that point I really had no idea what we were getting into. All I knew is that it was a Spyro game, and my son loves Spyro, so I ordered it. It came with the three Skylanders that are included in the starter pack, which by the information that I read, would be enough to beat the game. As time has gone on we have purchased many of the others as well. I believe that the ideas and design of the game are awesome. There are so many levels to beat that even after 9 months the novelty has not worn off. I am glad that my son is still enjoying it. Other features include multiplayer and battle mode. It has definitely been fun for the whole faminy!
We gave my soon to be 6 year old son this for Christmas and he loves it. He is going to buy more skylander’s with his christmas money, and he wants some for his birthday too. The more you have the more lives you have in the game, once a skylander is “dead” he is out for the chapter. My son has no problem maneuvering through the game. We like to play 2 player and sometimes that can get tricky if you are trying to work together to walk a certain path, but other than that it is just a lot of fun. Since the additional action figures aren’t that much more money I rate this so high, because it gives him something he wants to collect. He is still a beginning reader so it is really nice that the story is spoken. The villian descriptions are read only, so it is a good thing if an adult is there to read those parts. They just give a heads up on what the villian does, and can come in handy.
Before I say anything, I would just like to point out that I am a 26 year old male. I have been playing games since the days of Atari and in that time have enjoyed more games than I could hope to name. My rule is: if it’s fun, then I will play it. I play many mature rated games (e.g. Resident Evil, Gears of War, etc.), but am never scared or ashamed to pick up (and admit when I love) an E rated game. When I first saw the videos of this game in action I knew it was going to be a blast. It also looked like the perfect kind of game I could play with my girlfriend. Since she isn’t a gamer to the same degree as me, she often quits playing any time a game frustrates her. I figured since this game was “for kids,” it wouldn’t just be something that she could enjoy in her free time (did I mention she likes Spyro :P), but also something we could enjoy together. So far so good!Load times are quick. The game has excellent quality as far as graphics go. They are very colorful and detailed. The music blends in with the worlds. I haven’t caught myself tapping my foot to the tunes yet, but haven’t exactly been muting the TV either. The voice acting is excellent and the humor is very well delivered. We have chuckled a few times already. Kids will enjoy it too :)The controls are easy to pick up. You can perform pretty much all of your actions with just a couple buttons. They might frustrate on occasion as they lack some things that some might be accustomed to. The ability to strafe is not presen.
I bought this for my 8 y-o boy after he talked about it for a month or so. He loves it! I was concerned about whether or not it would be a creative game or a mindless exercise but now that I’ve played it a couple times with him, I realize that it requires of lot of mental acuity to understand all the nuances of the game, it’s characters, their unique abilities, where to go and how to get there. While we still put limits on how much time he spends playing the game, I do feel assured that he is enjoying himself heartily and using his brain at the same time.
I was looking for a video game my wife might enjoy playing as a christmas gift. A friend of mine recommendedSkylanders. I was leary of it, afraid it might be too cutesy and easy. But wanted something that would not be tooDifficult or frustrating for her to play. I was also skeptical of having to purchase additional figures to playAnd enjoy the game.To make a long story short, we are both in our 60,s and hooked on this game.it is easy to get into,But challenging and requires some puzzle solving skills. The puzzles require some thought, but do not require a PHD in physics to solve. the game is throughly entertainingAnd is the type you can play for short periods of time, and enjoy. We started out with the starter set for the wii and have added 9 additional figures. We have no intensionOf purchasing all 32 figures but a couple of each element are helpful. If you are looking for a game which is fun and challenging at the same time i would recommend this to you.The only thing i would caution you about is the giant figures that come in a three pack.if you havethe spyro adventureVersion of the game be sure that all three figures are compatable with this version. We have run across a coupleFigures in the three packs that can only be played with the Giant version of the game. This is no big problem for us as we will probibly purchase the Giant version of the some time in the fuI just hope that people who have invested a large amount of time and money in supporting the gameWill not be lef.
“Santa” got this for my kids, aged 5 & 7, for Xmas, and they haven’t stopped playing it since. I also picked up a couple extra character packs, which are highly recommended. The game is surprisingly large and in-depth, but in order to get through some of the tougher areas, or to access some bonus items, you’ll need a variety of characters, which are sold separately. Of course, the little ones have already logged some serious time in the game, and I actually like playing with them, so it’s money well spent. Just be prepared to dish out for more than the starter pack. For the game itself, it’s a Gauntlet-style affair, with fairly linear top down levels, and the ability to equip hats that boost your stats, as well as the option to purchase skill upgrades for each Skylander, which can have a big impact on your ability to cut through the occasionally difficult hordes. The portal works incredibly well, the swapping is fluid, and I haven’t seen any issues so far, with about 20 hours of gameplay to this point. I highly recommend the game for kids roughly 6 and up.
I have not played it, so I’m kind of writing this second hand, but my 13 yo son loves this game. He had asked for it for Christmas. Admittedly, I can see it becoming a tad pricey what with all the little figures required to play it, but he seems to be enamoured of the kind of “interactive comic bookiness” of it all. Seems to be a very clean game, no graphic violence, funny and a lot of problem solving seems to be involved. I like the simple fact that it is a clean game that does not seem to be developed solely for the six and under crowd.
My two girls and I love playing this game. The story is excellent. Patrick Warburton as Flynn is awesome, especially as the ending credits are playing. Actually, there are a lot of great characters in this game. The challenges are of medium-to-high difficulty. We really enjoy, not only the concept that you have a toy that enters the game world, but the fact that you can carry the toy, along with it’s experience, to another game. We have given this starter pack to some of our friends so our kids can come over with their favorite characters and play. Skylanders is not overtly violent or bloody, but there’s plenty of fighting and shooting. The story (Joel Cohen) and the design of the different worlds really makes it. Not sure what the game designers have against sheep…
My son had all of the Skylander starter packs except this one. He asked for it for Christmas at the last minute and thankfully it arrived on time and I had a happy eight year old!!The package arrived just as described and was just what I had hoped for and expected!! The price was great and timing perfect! A++
