I absolutely love this game! I bought it for my 9 year old son and quickly became hooked! The variety of racing styles keeps it interesting, and the graphics and racing action are excellent!
Coming from a background of Dirt, the Forza series, PGR series, Rallisport Challenge, and probably other racing games I have forgotten, I’m really enjoying Dirt 2. This review is based on about 10 hours with the demo, and 3 hours with the real game. The racing in Dirt 2 is edge of control, white knuckle racing. The tracks are challenging, with most of those I’ve raced so far having a couple of nice high speed stretches, sweeping corners, and some tight, technical spots. One aspect that can make it that much scarier is that some tracks have multiple routes you can take. The differences are subtle, and the distance traveled is pretty much the same, but one will set you up for the next corner better than the other. This does introduce some intersection points in the track where the routes will cross which can lead to some nice t-bones. I found that I was physically cringing every time I ran through an intersection, full throttle, hoping for the best. The different race modes include many types of off-road racing. There are timed point-to-point races where you won’t see another car for the entire race, and there are rally cross style races where you can’t seem to get through the race without hitting someone else. Both types are very entertaining. There are other types, but it basically boils down to whether or not there are other cars in your vicinity at the same time. One feature in Dirt 2 that has made it much more enjoyable than the original Dirt is the flashbacks. I have been playing race car games my entire life, and Dirt 2 is the best one I have ever played bar none. What was the best game I had played prior to this one? Dirt . Codemasters have done something really special and that is make a game that looks beautiful, run fantastic, has great easy to use menus, and and simulates real driving. You don’t have to deal with building your engine, making the tires better, or any of that tedious crap that is in the Gran Turismo and Forza series. You just race and have a blast. The tracks are gorgeous and non repetitive. You just can’t ask for more in a racer, and at 60 fps solid all the time this is the best game for racing.
All I can say is WOW. Great race experience. This is the closest to dirt track racing of any game I have played. The experience is vaulted to a new plateau when combined with the Microsoft steering wheel. I actually raced dirt track for many years and this helps with those yearnings to go back (too old now).
What can you say about this game other than it ROCKS! This review is going to be short and to the point. You like racing? You like racing in the dirt? You like OBSCENE crashes? Well then, this game has it all. The difficulty is spot on. The graphics are off the hook! The only thing I DON’T like about this game is the whole MTV style presentation. Rally Racing IS NOT an extreme sport! It is a legitimate, professional racing discipline. Thsi game is crazy good at blending the simulation aspect with an arcade presentation. You can literally waste hour after hour trying to better your lap times, and this game never gets old. Dirt 2 is a better game than the last Dirt in almost every way. My only complaint about this game is the lackluster amount of treu rally events. HINT HINT Codemasters, you can make this game a true masterpiece with some well thought out DLC concentrating on rally events. HELL, why don’t you go all out and make it a full blown downloadable expansion? Thanks again Codemasters for another truely exhilerating racing experience. I can’t WAIT to get my hands on the new F1 game from you guys next year! Keep up tthe great work!
Still is the best one out of the series, the 3rd one sucked.
My partner gave me this for Christmas, but I hadn’t asked for it and I had my reservations after not enjoying Grid at all (and realizing it was the same company). I am so glad I gave it a try though. There is a bit of a learning curve (as with Grid, which perhaps I haven’t given enough of a chance. If I ever get bored with Dirt, I might go back), but now I find this is the game I play almost every single day.The tracks and light conditions are gorgeously rendered, and very realistic as far as traction response on loose gravel/packed sand/tarmac. For instance, on loose gravel you only have to let up on the gas to start drifting, whereas tarmac gives you noticeably more control on turns (this is an improvement over my previous racing game, Need for Speed Nitro on the Wii, where drifting requires hitting a complicated combination of buttons. In the Codemaster games, you can play with just gas and brake, and drifting happens naturally as I said depending on your speed and the road surface just by releasing the gas (should also mention I’m playing with a Speed Wheel instead of a standard controller)). I like the choice of different views, but whereas the cockpit view seems the most realistic, it more often hinders rather than helps me and I always return to the standard full-car camera. This is my gripe with Grid — very, very hard to control cars. I spend the entire race constantly smashing into the sides of the track, and forget about keeping up with the pack (though I dis.
Had to keep cleaning the game, but after about 10 times it finally got to working right after that no more problems
This games is so beautiful to look at, and you can tell that people worked very hard to make such a polished gaming experience. The realism is actually what takes away from the game for me, though. The vehicles control so realistically, and everything feels like it’s almost real world. But it just doesn’t feel fun. It’s more for the realistic racing sim fan. If you like gran turismo games, you would feel right at home with this one. The only thing that makes it feel a bit arcadey is the rewind feature when you crash. You get a couple icons per event that allow you rewind time after you crash. It’s kind of like the sand dagger in the prince of persia games. That does give you at least one feature that I really enjoyed. I will say, though, that there is definitely an audience for this game. Alot of people will enjoy the realism, and awesome graphics. But if you’re looking for an arcade type racer, with cool crashes, and an insane sense of speed, this title doesn’t really deliver.
So far so good, the online reviews were pretty close. I recommend reading some of the online reviews before purchase, if tyou enjoyed the first game you will certainly enjoy this one.
