As I’ve mentioned in some of my other reviews, I am heavily into roleplaying games of any type, however they are presented. I was attracted to this game by its Might and Magic title. I’ve played the PS1 and PS2 games under this aegis and, while they weren’t as fun for me as other games back in the day, I saw no cause to avoid this game simply because it bore the same name. I have the original version attached to my Steam account, but my PC isn’t quite strong enough graphically to play it smoothly, so I figured I’d give the Xbox 360 console version a shot. There are a few differences between the two, such as the separate character classes in the console version, each with its own specific skill set, but nothing notable enough to give me pause. This particular game reminds me of some of the dungeon crawls I and my friends did old-school on the tabletop version of D&D.GAMEPLAY-4 StarsThis game is set up on a first-person perspective to give a more personalized feel for the action, so you feel things are happening to you. The one major difference from just about all other FPS shooters is that you look down… and you have a BODY!!! And FEET!!! This one, as silly as it sounds, was a deal maker for me, because honestly, the only time someone might look down and NOT see their body is if they’re on a bad acid trip, so that in itself made the game more real for me (yes, I know it’s still just a game, thank you).Combat in the game is varied enough to be decent. You can parry,.
I love FPSs, but not RPG. D&D syled games have always been fascinating but I never wanted to hover around a table with 5 other nerds (I say this lovingly) nor do I want to play an amazingly graphic same styled game to have to stop and have dialogue with people, work on opening up my abilities through hours of playing and organize my backpack. This game is straight up swords, bows, magic fire and ice, dragons, magicians, ogres HD filled with awesomeness!! Supposedly there were issues with software, PC version worked fine and the Xbox version did as well.
This is a really fun game, not too easy or hard just right for me.
I just recently purchased and started playing this game. I assume that it’s because of when it came out that people have spotted comparisons and, mostly, contrasts between it and Oblivion. Nowadays, no one would probably put the 2 together at all, other than the magic and swords and first-person perspective. The gameplay and appearance remind me more of Dishonored, minus a lot of the cool stuff like upgrades and dual-wield. I bet that if it was made in the last few years, it’d have all of that. The controls are a bit stiff and I don’t like being forced to only use weapons and/or magic from one specific class but that doesn’t kill the fun. The story is ok and the voice acting was done well enough. You have a decent submenu to choose weapons, armor, and spells from but it’s not extensive like in an RPG. Also, you get XP from killing enemies which levels you up and gains you bonus attributes but they are all predetermined. It seems like the developers tried to make everything pretty simple. Just a few additions and tweeks and this game could’ve had a lot more depth and replay value. Overall, if you can get it for under $20, it’s worth a playthrough. Especially if you’re looking for a few games to hold you over until you get an Xbox One.
I decided to purchase Dark Messiah not just after seeing the video preview on retrolio, but after watching a PC walkthrough of the game posted on youtube. The game footage looked awesome, and challenging. The person who was playing switched from a sword, to daggers, to a bow. It looked like so much fun. So imagine my disappointment when I got the game home for 360 and was rudely awakened to having to choose only ONE weapon of choice. I chose the archer – bow skill major, minor dagger skill. It took me a while to get over it, however there were certain points in the game where I wished I could wield a sword – particularly the end where I’m fighting Arentir and he summons those damn ghouls that just wouldn’t die. This was my major con for this game, that I was locked into mainly one type of weapon. Another con I had was because of faulty design. There is a part in the game where you have to chase the ghoul that has taken a crystal you need. If the ghoul gets too far ahead, you fail and have to redo it. However, as you reach different checkpoints the game auto-saves. Well I had just reached a checkpoint and the ghoul had gotten a bit ahead and I was told that I lost and I selected retry. The problem here being that I had JUST reached the checkpoint, so everytime the game loaded, right away the sreen would then say that I lost. I had to reload from my last major save, which was at the beginning of the chapter. I was not happy. With the cons out of the way, on to the greatness. This.
I bought this game as a present, the following is the the recaptured opinion of it’s teenage user:”There are many cool things about the game, it’s really fun and has good length. The multi player is really fun. You can pick between 4 classes; Mage, Rogue, Warrior & Assassin. Each class is very different. In almost every level there are secret areas where you can unlock weapons for a specific class. Overall the game is really fun, but it is kind of hard.”
Both of my children love to play this. I have a girl and a boy.
Had this game on computer, but it works far better on a game system. A good extention of the Might & Magic game titles. Everything of Might & Magic, but adds terrific graphics and a good story line.
GREAT game and great gameplay! My xbox thanks me for this bought!
