Great game, and amazing graphics, my 11 year old nephew saw me playing it and now can’t stop playing it himself.
Love this game!
Comix zone is a game I played in my childhood and always had a fairly difficult time with. It is a beat em up side scroll-er that rewards moves based on tactics and not just brute force. The challenge can be unfair when it comes to obstacles more often then not as opposed to enemies which you generally have a tough time with if you are not strong enough to face them. If you like Genesis games this is one to own.
Here’s the deal: I usually do detailed reviews on old video games, but on this title I can’t. This is because I own the Genesis model one (the original, came bundled with Sonic 1, had headphone jack, volume adjuster and is slightly rounded around cartridge port). When I got my copy of the game, I couldn’t even get the "Produced by and or.." white text that always appears on screen upon starting up a Genesis game. This happens sometimes with my Genesis games. I have owned my Genesis since I got it Christmas 1993, and it works great with every game I’ve owned in my life. Sometimes there is issues with using the Sonic 3 with Knuckles lock-on, but that’s expected. Also, I still get Genesis games online from time to time, and sometimes they have to be cleaned or adjusted in the port, but I’ve never had a game that did not play on my Genesis until I got Comix Zone in used shape the other day.A little reading on the internet tells the tale. The Genesis model 1 has issues with this game. I’ve read that some people’s Comix Zone cart freezes at a certain part of the game, or glitches out, or resets. A few others have reported that the cartridge, like mine, flat out does not even start up. There is speculation as to the cause (something to do with either a bad patch or a connection pin or something). Also, since the game was released so late in the lifespan of the Genesis, there is speculation that the game was poorly assembled. Remember, this is around the time that Genesis aban.
This game SHOULD be a classic. It was wrote and released rather late in the Genesis’ life, and if I recall it’s a port from a PC game. (Or is the PC a port from th..oh nevermind.) This is an inneractive comic book alright. For it’s time it has a nice story line, and if graphics are your thing they’re good too. Fight your way through an evil comic book and escape using kung fu and your electrically-charged rat named Road Kill!!
I suppose it’s the video-game equivelent of Jet Li then.Comix Zone is a super-metafictional beat-em-up adventure starring Sketch Turner (and his rodent sidekick Roadkill), a grungy artist who is zapped into his own comic-book and must fight the powerful mutant Mortus (a boss who sort of resembles Colonel Sanders crossed with one of his own chickens). The most innovative thing about the game is that it is set within the panels of the comic-book, with Sketch hopping from one scene to the next. Secrets and power-ups can be revealed by shredding the pages too.I’ll bet my bottom dollar that the concept and execution of this game partially inspired The Matrix. When you think about it, they do have a lot in common. But CZ is undeniably 90s in its production design and style. The game doesn’t last for very long but it’s very challenging. The most annoying thing about it is the fact that you only get one life for the entire game and when you hit enemies it diminishes your energy bar. Not very fair.CZ was released right at the tail-end of the Genesis’ reign, but it has still become a classic since that time. Personally, I feel that one play-though is enough.Graphics A-Sound A-Gameplay BLasting Appeal B-

To me, this is one of the best beat em up games of all time, not to mention you can get it for a pretty cheap price. The whole comic book theme is very fun to go through, with different panels and pages. They even have those dialogue bubbles when they talk, and (sometimes) the evil guy draws the enemies you have to defeat. People actually think this game is repetitive-are you kidding me? There are so many different enemies that I never got bored playing it. I haven’t played too many of these side-scrolling (more like panel-jumping) punch kick games, but I had a very good time playing this one. If you have a Genesis, just go out and get it. If you don’t, get a Genesis for maybe $20-40, because there is an abundance of good title on the Genesis, and get this game along with all of the Sonic the Hedgehog ones. There’s only one bad thing about this game, and I don’t think this one thing should stop you from getting this awesome game. It is just VERY challenging, and I mean it’s challenging. Sometimes it’s a fun challenge, other times you’ll feel like never playing the game again. This only means the levels take a while to master, and I think they should have made the health gauge a tad bit longer. You only get one health gauge, and it is VERY hard to keep it up most of the time. Other than that, this game is very fun, and you don’t have to be willing to sit through it to play it-you only have to be willing to have fun. I think this should have been named a classic, because it’s a.
