A journey through the origins of populism and its effect on present-day politics. Written before the most recent us election, but still very relevant
Populism has many forms, had many voices and surged to surface of the political agenda, raised by students, white or blue collars and other identifiable groups fingering at the establishment of ignorance or supreme bliss. While the democratisation process made not only the gears of governance but the oversight of it available to many, the chances of conquering the wave of discontent paved the road to power for many able yet malcontent characters, willing to prove their point rather than to improve and build on the achieved stable platforms. The establishment should take heed of the swift power that can unravel aeons of progress in a whiff and how possible the most radical scenarios can come to life – and engage them with their own critical thinking rather than to ignore, close in and cast them away. The power of technology today enables both the verticalisation of data – where everyone hear what they want to hear – as well as the powerful mobilisation effect where a simple call for rebellion sounds louder than the sophisticated voice for reason.Ignorance, a blunt approach painted in black and white is what makes it very dangerous and appealing to the disenfranchised and uninvolved citizens.
Much to the era and point of a period we will live with for years
Mr. Judis says that "’populists believe [their] demands are worthy and justified, but they don’t believe the establishment will be willing to grant them." And so you have the promises of Donald Trump to represent the masses because his personal wealth allows him to run a campaign not dependent on necessary funds provided by the established banks and corporations. Never mind that he has on experience with public office, little or no knowledge of public policy nor a empirical support for the outrageous promises he makes like his claim that he’ll get rid of ISIS because he knows more than the generals. He has promised to shut down his borders to illegal immigrants and deport those who are already in the U.S.. He will renegotiate trade agreements such as NAFTA and bring back manufacturing jobs that have moved to Mexico and China. These promises resonate with the middle class that have lost good-paying jobs in factories only to be replaced by unemployment or low-paying service sector jobs, concerns that "establishment candidates" such as Hillary Clinton or Jeb Bush refuse to address.A similar sentiment was felt in Britain that led to the vote to exit from the European Union and has seen the rise of National Front Party in France led by Marine le Pen her promises to close France’s border to immigration and, like Britain, quit the European Union. "The Populist Explosion" great introduction to the anti-immigrant, anti-globalization stance that has captur.
Very, very good. This book contains an erudite, reasoned and impartial implicit warning to politicians everywhere in the west.
Highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an even handed assessment of the current political landscape. Refreshingly clear-sighted reporting. Thank you, John Judis!
Interesting
Great book…explains a lot
Judis is a historian of repute. He brilliantly identifies how history repeats itself, cycle by Presidential cycle. And how mistakes of the past tend to re-occur whether Democrats or Republicans are in power. It is evident that Republican Presidents have caused more damage to the image of America than Democrats. The current Preisidential race is watched incredulously by the World. Lost in wonderment that this is the best that the most powerful country in the World can offer. The Republican candidate is a disgrace and many South Africans would even prefer our current Preisident Zuma to Trump. And that says a lot. Judus also shows how the cycles are mirrored globally. Populism flourishes in time of discontent, fuelled by unemployment and inequality. The envy of the have-nots of the haves spills over into entitlement, unrest, looting and destruction of the very facilities provided at great cost for the upliftment of people. Thus the Arab Spring is repeated in Country after Country from Lybia to Egypt to South Africa and even the UK and other Europen Countries; and unless economic growth riases the boat it is a race to the bottom with the USA in the forefront.
This was very good insight into the recent political changes.
